AltPharm—a Laurel-based medical marijuana dispensary—has received its state pre-approval license to operate in the National Harbor area of Prince George’s County, Maryland, opening as early as the summer of 2017. The spokeswomen of AltPharm says the license will allow the company to sell medical marijuana in state legislative District 26, which includes Fort Washington, Oxon Hill and Accokeek.
The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission approved preliminary licenses for 102 dispensaries statewide in November. Six applicants, such as AltPharm, have already been pre-approved to open dispensaries but whether all six would actually open dispensaries within the county isn’t determinable at this point in the approval process, however, because applicants were selected by state senatorial district, and two of Harford’s three districts also encompass parts of neighboring counties.
The pre-approval license of AltPharm allows the company to continue their business plan of incorporating discounts and additional programs to make medicine more accessible for those in need. The National Harbor area provides easy access to both Maryland and Virginia—something that Washington, DC applicants cannot compete with. The area is also considered an up-and-coming place with lots of potential at home and across the river in Virginia.
