It is commonly used to alleviate the nausea and vomiting associated with such treatment and it can even stimulate the appetite to avoid weight loss. Now, a new study has shown that cannabis could prevent colon cancer in mice. The revelation that cannabis can prevent a type of cancer in mice means that it holds the hope of doing the same for humans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Colon Cancer?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colon cancer sometimes referred to as colorectal cancer, is explained as a type of cancer that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> begins in the large intestine (colon). The colon is the final part of the digestive tract and while colon cancer is typical in older adults, it can present at any age. Colon cancer usually begins as benign (non-cancerous) small clumps of cells known as polyps. The polyps form inside the common and develop into colon cancers over time. When the cells are benign and remain so, there are very few, if any, symptoms to indicate their presence, which is why physicians recommend regular screening tests to discover polyps before they turn cancerous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of Colon Cancer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people with colon cancer experience no symptoms in the early stages but when the following symptoms appear, they will vary depending on the size and location of the cancerous cells in your large intestine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inconsistent bowel movements such as going from constipation to diarrhea persistently.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rectal bleeding.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood in stool.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persistent abdominal discomfort which includes cramps, gas, and pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unexplained weight loss.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling like the bowel does not empty.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>A Summary of the New Study<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers looked at the activation of the cannabinoid receptor type 2 as a way of preventing colitis-associated colon cancer by myeloid cell deactivation of what is called the \u201cupstream of IL-22 production\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/iscience\/fulltext\/S2589-0042(20)30696-9?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS2589004220306969%3Fshowall%3Dtrue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The study<\/a> was published in late August 2020 and found that cannabis helped prevent the development of colon cancer in mice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It explains that when the intestines are in a state of disequilibrium, it can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/inflammatory-bowel-disease\/\">inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)<\/a> and that chronic inflammation then leads to oncogenesis (the process where healthy cells turn cancerous). The study<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0goes on to demonstrate how tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) reduces colitis-associated colorectal cancer, which is a specific type of colon cancer that develops from long-standing colon inflammatory bowel disease. THC is able to attenuate or reduce colorectal cancer by binding to the endocannabinoid receptor called cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through examining tissues from multiple locations, the team of researchers was able to confirm that THC affects cells especially in the mucosal barrier sites found in the colon and the lungs. By using models of colitis (chronic digestive disease) and systemic inflammation, they were able to display that THC can act as a potent suppressor of abnormal immune responses by \u201cprovoking coordination&#8221; between the antigen-presenting cells and T cells in the immune system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Other Preventative Measures<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that cannabis stands as a possible preventative measure for colon cancer, let\u2019s have a look at the other preventative measures which can be taken to further reduce the chances of developing colon cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in order to get a variety of vitamins and nutrients.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid drinking but if you choose to drink, do it in moderation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop smoking. This also means that your cannabis therapy will fare better when ingested.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to exercise for 30 minutes on most days of the week.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintain a healthy weight through balanced meals and regular exercise.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until now, we have known that cannabis can be helpful in alleviating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/inflammation\/\">inflammation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/chronic-pain\/\">pain<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/nausea\/\">nausea<\/a>, and vomiting. Now, cannabis shows potential preventative promise against cancer. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been reported that 2020 has seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/colon-rectal-cancer\/about\/key-statistics.html#:~:text=Overall%2C%20the%20lifetime%20risk%20of,risk%20for%20developing%20colorectal%20cancer.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">104,610 new cases of colon cancer<\/a> in America<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
