Nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy when other medications haven&#8217;t worked represent one of two FDA-approved indications for synthetic THC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dronabinol and nabilone are synthetic delta-9-THC medications that have been licensed and approved for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting since 1986 (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8882944\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrative Cancer Therapies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Looking back, this was an important advancement but still short-sighted because lab-synthesized THC misses out on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/what-does-new-cannabis-research-tell-us-about-the-entourage-effect\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entourage effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between all the cannabinoids and terpenes present in whole plant medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast forward to 2017, when the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine concluded that oral cannabinoids are effective antiemetics and that some of the strongest clinical evidence was in adults with chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28182367\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NASEM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). New <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3165951\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that it likely has more to do with THC&#8217;s direct effect on CB1 receptors and somewhat with CBD\u2019s interaction with serotonin receptors, TRPV1 receptors, and the FAAH enzyme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the rest of the plant was left behind for a time, new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8669157\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is shining light on \u201cminor\u201d or rare cannabinoids that may help with nausea. You should talk to your oncologist or gastroenterologist about medical cannabis first before deciding to self-medicate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with gut health issues like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/inflammatory-bowel-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IBD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/irritable-bowel-syndrome\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IBS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> commonly use medical cannabis for nausea, vomiting, and digestive issues.
