Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/97\/20\/11050#:~:text=The%20human%20cerebral%20cortex%20is,mm%20(1%E2%80%933).&amp;text=The%20thickness%20of%20the%20cortex,of%20neurodegenerative%20and%20psychiatric%20disorders.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data<\/a> suggests that &#8220;m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">easuring the thickness of human cerebral cortex could provide powerful tools for diagnosing and studying a variety of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders\u201d which demonstrates the importance of understanding what impacts cortical thickness as well as its significance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Cortical Thickness?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cortical thickness refers to the thickness of the layers of the cerebral cortex is considered to be a brain morphometric measure of this thickness. The \u201chuman cerebral cortex is a highly folded sheet of neurons\u201d where \u201cthe thickness of which varies between 1 and 4.5mm, with an overall average of approximately 2.5mm\u201d. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cercor\/article\/25\/6\/1608\/301081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2014 study<\/a>, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children (10 years of age) with higher intelligence were found to have slightly thinner cortical thickness but by the time more intelligent individuals get to the age of 42, a thicker cortex is \u201cassociated with higher intelligence\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhbs.com\/the-central-nervous-system-of-vertebrates-an-introduction-to-structure-and-function-3-volume-set-book\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Larger brains tend to have thicker cortices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when compared to smaller mammals such as shrews. It is also said that there is an approximately logarithmic relationship between \u201cbrain weight and cortical thickness\u201d. In order to measure the thickness of the cortices, a magnetic resonance imagining (MRI) is taken of the brain which is then also useful for relating it to other measures. T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here are also differences in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1361841503000069?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thickness throughout the brain<\/a>, for example, the sensory cortex is thinner than the motor cortex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, there are a lot of contradictory results on the trajectories in human cortical development which leads to inconsistency in research results. Fortunately, researchers have taken to understanding the influences on cortical thickness which includes genetics and environmental factors&#8230;and now it does not include cannabis use, but rather alcohol consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Cannabis Was Originally Thought to Negatively Impact Brain Structure<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27687470\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2016 study<\/a> took to understanding \u201cadolescent cortical thickness pre-and-post marijuana\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The team of researchers began by stating that there are limited studies available that have followed the \u201cpre-and post-initiation of alcohol and marijuana use to help identify to what extent discrepancies in structural brain integrity and pre-existing or substance-related\u201d. The researchers, Joanna Jacobus, and team, followed 69 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 19. All of the participants underwent neurocognitive testing, neuroimaging as well as \u201csubstance use and mental health interviews\u201d. This study suggests that \u201cmarijuana use (as adolescents) may interfere with thinning trajectories that contribute to morphological differences in young adulthood that are often observed in cross-section studies of heavy marijuana users\u201d. Opposingly, new research suggests that alcohol use is the cause of reduction in cortical thickness-not cannabis use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Alcohol is Linked to Reduced Cortical Thickness<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33726938\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2021 study<\/a> was conducted by<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jeremy Harper, Stephen Malone, Sylia Wilson, Ruskin Hunt, Kathleen Thomas, and William Lacono. The team of researchers made use of 436 twins which were each 24 years old. They reported that \u201cgreater alcohol, but not cannabis, misuse was associated with the reduced thickness of prefrontal and frontal medial cortices as well as [the] temporal lobe, intraparietal sulcus, insula, parietal operculum, precuneus, and parietal medial areas\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers concluded by stating that, <\/span>\u201cNo significant associations between cannabis use and thickness were observed\u201d and that \u201cthe lack of cannabis-specific effects is consistent with literature reviews, large sample studies and evidence that observed cannabis effects may be accounted for by comorbid alcohol\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, they stated that their study \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provides novel evidence that alcohol-related reductions in cortical thickness of control\/salience brain networks likely represent the effects of alcohol exposure and premorbid characteristics of the genetic predisposition to misuse alcohol\u201d. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/norml.org\/news\/2021\/03\/25\/twin-study-alcohol-use-but-not-cannabis-use-during-young-adulthood-linked-with-reductions-in-cortical-thickness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NORML<\/a> supported the team of researchers by offering support<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of their findings by providing two supportive studies, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28646566\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one published in 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jneurosci.org\/content\/35\/4\/1505.short\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the other in 2015<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which also found that cannabis was not associated with negative changes in brain morphology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NORML also states that \u201caccording to the findings of a l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iterature review of <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/article-abstract\/2678214?redirect=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">69 studies published in JAMA Psychiatry<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d found that,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ssociations between cannabis use and cognitive functioning in cross-sectional studies of adolescents and young adults are small and may be of questionable clinical importance for most individuals. Furthermore, abstinence of longer than 72 hours diminishes cognitive deficits associated with cannabis use. Results indicate that previous studies of cannabis youth may have overstated the magnitude and persistence of cognitive deficits associated with marijuana use\u201d.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite contradictory results on the trajectories in human cortical development, having the reassurance that cannabis does not have any significant impact on brain morphology is quite invaluable to consumers. Additionally, consumers can abstain from cannabis consumption for more than 72 hours in order to restore the adverse cognitive effects associated with cannabis consumption.
