However, understanding what this broad term entails is rather important considering the vast influence of this neurotransmitter, which is often referred to as a hormone. In this article, we will be unpacking what it means, the respective medications, and benefits, as well as reactions and risks.<\/p>\n<h2><b>What Does Serotonergic Mean?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The Oxford online dictionary describes serotonergic as \u201cdenoting a nerve ending that releases, and is stimulated by serotonin,\u201d while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/serotonergic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Merriam-Webster<\/a> defines serotonergic as, \u201cliberating, activated by or involving serotonin in the transmission of nerve impulses.\u201d Together, these definitions provide a good overview\u2014but let\u2019s get a better understanding of what seratonergic means in relation to the human body.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/biochemistry-genetics-and-molecular-biology\/serotonergic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science Direct<\/a> explains that \u201cserotonergic neurons account for less than 1% of all the neurons in the brain, yet, there is virtually no corner of the CNS (central nervous system) that is lacking serotonergic input.\u201d Despite accounting for so few of the neurons in the brain and considering the magnitude of its reach through the CNS, it makes sense that \u201cthe serotonergic system is well-positioned to provide a broad modulatory influence upon diverse functions rather than the precise point-to-point transmission characteristic of traditional sensory, motor or associational pathways.\u201d Essentially, serotonergic is described as something that mimics serotonin and influences serotonin receptors, which ultimately impacts a multitude of functions in the body.<\/p>\n<h2><b>What Medications Impact Serotonin?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>It should be noted that serotonergic medications refer to serotonin-related medications as opposed to medications that contain serotonin. Serotonin cannot be directly obtained from food, and oral serotonin itself can\u2019t cross the brain\u2019s naturally defensive blood-brain barrier. That being said, serotonin-related medications that impact the body\u2019s organic levels of serotonin include, but are not limited to, the following.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pharmaceuticals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as citalopram, fluoxetine, paroxetine, and sertraline<\/li>\n<li>Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) such as duloxetine and venlafaxine<\/li>\n<li>Bupropion<\/li>\n<li>Tricyclic antidepressants such as nortriptyline and amitriptyline<\/li>\n<li>Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as isocarboxazid and phenelzine<\/li>\n<li>Anti-migraine medications such as carbamazepine, carbamazepine, sodium valproate, naratriptan, and sumatriptan<\/li>\n<li>Pain medication such as codeine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, and oxycodone<\/li>\n<li>Lithium<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<\/b>Many are aware of the aforementioned pharmaceuticals used to treat various illnesses, but did you know that there are psychedelics that are considered to be serotonergic? The chemical structure of these psychedelics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3181663\/figure\/DialoguesClinNeurosci-3-265-g001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closely resembles<\/a> the structure of serotonin and provides physiological effects.<\/p>\n<p><b>Classic Psychedelics:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>DMT<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/discover-the-many-types-of-psilocybin-magic-mushrooms\/\">Psilocybin<\/a><\/li>\n<li>LSD<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/mescaline-is-associated-with-major-positive-psychiatric-outcomes\/\">Mescaline<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/researchers-weigh-in-on-the-hype-about-mdma-therapy\/\">MDMA<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/232248#function\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medical News Today<\/a> explains that \u201cthe relationship between serotonin and many bodily functions remains unclear\u201d but that \u201cdoctors may prescribe drugs that regulate serotonin levels to treat a number\u201d of disorders. These disorders include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/depression\/\">depression<\/a>, stress, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/bipolar-disorder\/\">bipolar disorder<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/ptsd\/\">PTSD<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/bulimia\/\">bulimia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder\/\">obsessive-compulsive disorder<\/a>, panic disorder, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/migraines\/\">migraines<\/a>. These medications are able to help conditions such as these due to the fact that, for example, the SSRIs \u201cstop the body from reabsorbing serotonin,\u201d therefore blocking the accumulation of serotonin in the body, which can be dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Low levels of serotonin can also lead to problems such as a low mood and issues with memory. Drugs such as MDMA (ecstasy) induce the release of significant quantities of serotonin at once, which causes a serotonin \u201ccrash\u201d afterward. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2996210\/#:~:text=Serotonin,receptor%20agonist%20or%20partial%20agonists.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to this 2009 study<\/a>, \u201cSerotonin has been implicated in the causation of hallucinations, based on the fact that a number of hallucinogenic drugs, like lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), mescaline, psilocybin, and ecstasy, appear to act, at least in part, as serotonin.\u201d This suggests that these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/a-quick-guide-to-the-many-types-of-psychedelic-therapy\/\">psychedelics<\/a> can cause hallucinations due to accumulated serotonin.<\/p>\n<h2><b>What About Serotonergic Hallucinations?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00213-018-5042-1#:~:text=Hallucinatory%20experiences%20triggered%20by%20serotonin,where%20such%20insight%20is%20lost.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 study<\/a> explained that serotonergic hallucinations are \u201challucinatory experiences triggered by serotonin\u201d and that they tend to be \u201cdream-like with the experiencer having insight (meta-awareness) that he is hallucinating.\u201d It is this awareness that separates serotonergic hallucinations from dopaminergic hallucinations where the individuals are not aware they are hallucinating. Just like serotonergic hallucinations stem from the overstimulation of the serotonin neurotransmitter, dopaminergic hallucinations stem from the overstimulation of the neurotransmitter known as dopamine.<\/p>\n<p>Both of these neurotransmitters, serotonin, and dopamine, are the \u201cchemical messengers\u201d that play roles \u201cin sleep and memory as well as metabolism and emotional well-being.\u201d These two are also commonly referred to as the \u201chappy hormones\u201d since they play a role in regulating mood and emotion. Despite these similarities, dopamine and serotonin operate differently; when either one\u2019s levels are impacted, they present with different conditions, which then will require their own treatment.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Serotonin Syndrome Is Not Something to Joke About<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The Mayo Clinic explains that \u201cexcessive accumulation of serotonin in your body creates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/serotonin-syndrome\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20354758\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">symptoms of serotonin syndrome<\/a>\u201d that can range from mild to life-threatening. Individuals can accumulate serotonin when consuming a serotonergic medication but are more likely to present with symptoms of serotonin syndrome if certain medications and\/or substances are combined. As an example of this, \u201cSerotonin syndrome may occur if you take an antidepressant with migraine medication. It may also occur if you take an antidepressant with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/marijuana-vs-opioids-which-is-more-effective-for-treating-pain\/\">opioid pain medication<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same can be said for those who want to explore psychedelic therapies.
