But what does this mean? What is mescaline? How is it used in a naturalist capacity? What kind of psychiatric improvements? Well, let\u2019s have a look at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/full\/10.1021\/acsptsci.1c00018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was published in 2021, to better understand the significance of this finding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Is Mescaline?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mescaline is a hallucinogenic compound that\u2019s derived from the infamous Peyote cactus ( <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lophophora williamsii<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the San Pedro cactus (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trichosurus pachanoi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and the Peruvian Torch cactus (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trichosurus peruvianus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). This alkaloid\u2019s compound chemical structure is similar to that of amphetamine and is administered orally. The effects of this hallucinogen are said to typically last between 8 to 12 hours (<a href=\"#references\">2<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study\u2019s team explains that mescaline is a naturally \u201coccurring phenethylamine and a serotonin-2A\/2C receptor agonist that can be prepared synthetically or extracted (<a href=\"#references\">1<\/a>).\u201d They go on to explain that this drug has been used for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/evolution-to-revolution-a-brief-history-of-psychedelics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thousands of years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Native Americans during religious ceremonies and for the treatment of various physical ailments (<a href=\"#references\">2<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mescaline is considered to be illegal by the authorities in the United States, but Native Americans recognize it as a sacrament. Interestingly enough, mescaline is extracted from peyote, and when used in religious ceremonies, \u201cit is exempt from its classification as a Schedule 1 controlled drug under the 1994 American Indian Religious Freedom Act [AIRFA] (<a href=\"#references\">2<\/a>).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Exploring the Therapeutic Effects of Mescaline<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study is the first international study to examine the possible medical use of mescaline and was published in ACS Pharmacology &amp; Translational Science in March 2021. The team of researchers included Agin-Liebes, Haas, Lancelotta, Uthaug, Ramaekers, and Davis. They began by explaining that \u201cdespite promising early preliminary research and favorable anecdotal reports, there is limited research investigating mescaline\u2019s psychotherapeutic potential (<a href=\"#references\">1<\/a>). They also explain that psychiatric conditions are contributing \u201csubstantially to the global disease burden.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team states that the \u201cprimary objective of this study was to explore the potential therapeutic and enduring effects of mescaline, and the mechanisms that may contribute to therapeutic effects (<a href=\"#references\">1<\/a>).\u201d They specifically assessed mescaline use for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/depression\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/ptsd\/\">post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/a>, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/alcoholism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/amphetamine-addiction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug use disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study involved the administration of an anonymous online questionnaire to adults who had to report on their mescaline use in a naturalistic setting. This type of setting can be explained as the place and manner in which the substance is most natural, or normally, being consumed. They recorded responses from 452 participants and then proceeded to assess the self-reported improvements in \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, post-traumatic stress disorder (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTSD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and drug use disorder (<a href=\"#references\">1<\/a>).\u201d The study reported that 68-86% of their respondents who had clinical conditions reported improvements after the participants\u2019 most memorable mescaline experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Survey Information From the Study<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey portion of this study asked participants to comment and respond to the following criteria <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<a href=\"#references\">1<\/a>):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health measure (to determine whether respondents have been diagnosed with a mental health condition)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychological insight questionnaire (internal insight such as goals and avoidance)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mystical experiences questionnaire (measures phenomenological effects)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">challenging experiences questionnaire (a measure of intensity)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ego dissolution inventory (to what extent the ego boundaries are impacted)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persisting effects questionnaire (changes in attitude, mood, behavior, etc)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nIn addition, researchers found<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that demographics did not overall make a large difference in responses to the survey, except that participants who had a history of anxiety and drug abuse reported that their conditions improved about using mescaline. There were also a few minor correlations they saw within participants who were subgrouped based on their psychological conditions, age, and gender identity.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These interesting correlations are described below (<a href=\"#references\">1<\/a>):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transgender or gender-fluid respondents with depression reported the highest percentage of improvement after having consumed mescaline, while males and females reported some improvement but the majority did not.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men and women with anxiety had the most improvement after consuming mescaline, while transgender or gender-fluid individuals reported some improvements, but more often reported no change or worsening symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men and women who suffered from PTSD reported the most improvement after consuming mescaline, while transgender or gender-fluid respondents more often reported no change or worsening PTSD symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men who struggle with alcohol misuse reported the most improvement, compared to the majority of women and transgender or gender-fluid respondents suffering from alcohol misuse.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women struggling with drug misuse reported the most improvement over males and transgender or gender-fluid respondents with the same symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nThe respondents were also asked to rate their mescaline experience and the majority reported that their mescaline experience was one of their top five, if not the number one, most spiritually significant, or meaningful experience (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#references\">1<\/a>)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While these positive self-reported benefits of the substance show promise of a time with more effective treatment, consumers need to be cautious, especially since the long-term use effects are still being understood.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>This Is Only the Beginning for Psychedelics<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The typical treatment of any psychiatric condition is usually a combination of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, the success depends on access to care and the body\u2019s response to the treatment. The team of researchers explains that these are the reasons for \u201cnecessitating further research into effective psychiatric treatment (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#references\">1<\/a>)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d- which should include mescaline and even ayahuasca or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/how-can-psilocybin-assist-treatment-resistant-depression\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psilocybin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this positive association between the naturalistic use of mescaline and the self-reported psychiatric improvements, the researchers explain that the neurobiological effects of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/a-quick-guide-to-the-many-types-of-psychedelic-therapy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychedelic-assisted therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are still unidentified. It should also be understood that this lack of research means that the long-term effects of mescaline consumption have not been investigated. Additionally, there seems to be a connection between \u201cfunctional changes in regions responsible for emotional processing and self-reference (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#references\">1<\/a>).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"references\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the team provided that there is a possibility that \u201cgeneral intentions for psychological or spiritual exploration\u201d contributed to the improvements which were reported (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"#references\">1<\/a>)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, the research which is exploring the mechanisms involved in psychedelic-assisted therapies is still in early phases.
