Huge strides have been made to decriminalize cannabis one state at a time, and we are very proud to highlight the work of our nation’s 21st state- Illinois. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Known for having both the fifth largest gross domestic product (GDP) and the sixth largest population in the United States, Illinois is home to many record-setting attributes: namely, being the 11th State in the nation to pass a bill legalizing the recreational use of marijuana and the sixth to pair decriminalization with “reparative justice” that allows those with specific convictions (i.e. non-violent crimes involving less than a certain amount of cannabis) an opportunity to have their convictions expunged or sealed- an opportunity for individuals to rebuild their lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This progressive bill is now awaiting approval on the desk of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, who is very vocal about his support for marijuana legalization and decriminalization (and who will now and forever be referred to only as our beloved Uncle P.) and will go into effect January 2020 once passed. This is a huge win for the Illinois economy, as it will release thousands of contributing citizens back into the state’s economy, increasing employment and giving many individuals, families, and communities a chance to rewrite their stories in a way that positively contributes to the state’s success! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As state Senator Toi Hutchinson said (D- Olympia Fields), we believe that what is most historic about the passage of this bill is not that it legalizes cannabis for all adult Illinois residents, but it also makes the extraordinary effort to reduce the trauma that was caused to communities targeted by the failed war on drugs of the Nixon era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
