While running has a whole list of benefits, one of the main appeals of this form of exercise is what we know as the &#8220;runner&#8217;s high,&#8221; described by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/runners-high#definition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Healthline<\/a> as \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a brief, deeply relaxing state of euphoria<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jospt.org\/doi\/10.2519\/jospt.1983.4.3.169\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Endorphins<\/a> have long been connected to the runner&#8217;s high phenomenon, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psypost.org\/2022\/01\/cannabinoid-receptors-in-the-brain-appear-to-play-a-key-role-in-the-euphoric-experience-known-as-the-runners-high-62404\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new research has found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that cannabinoid receptors\u2014the very ones cannabinoids from cannabis bind to\u2014play a key role.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Should Endorphins Be Getting All the Credit?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research\u2014which summarizes nearly two decades worth of work on the matter\u2014was conducted by Hilary Marusak and a team of other researchers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marusak is a neuroscientist at the Wayne State University School of Medicine, where she uses her lab to study brain development, mental health, and the role of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/cannabinoids-and-the-endocannabinoid-system-a-match-made-in-heaven\/\">endocannabinoid system<\/a> in stress regulation and anxiety disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Marusak, there are several decades worth of research proving that exercise is beneficial for one&#8217;s health. Those studies have found a consistent link between physical activity and reduced risks of various conditions, including cancer and heart disease. Scientists initially<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found exercise to increase endorphin levels in blood, delivering a host of effects like pain relief. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, endorphins cannot cross into the brain through the blood-brain barrier, which made researchers wonder if these chemicals could be held fully responsible for the runner&#8217;s high sensation. Deeper dives into the matter determined that endorphins \u201care not likely to be the main driver for the beneficial effects of exercise on mood and mental state,\u201d which is where Marusak and her team\u2019s research comes in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get a better understanding of the runner&#8217;s high, the team conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 33 published studies that looked into endocannabinoid levels and exercise. They then compared \u201cthe effects of an &#8216;acute&#8217; exercise session\u2014like going for a 30-minute run or cycle\u2014with the effects of &#8216;chronic&#8217; programs, such as a 10-week running or weightlifting program.\u201d This division was made because different levels of exertion may have \u201cdistinct effects on endocannabinoid responses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Endocannabinoids Steal the Spotlight<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The team found that \u201cexercise readily increases the levels of the body\u2019s endocannabinoids, which are molecules that work to maintain balance in the brain and body\u2014a process called \u2018homeostasis.\u2019\u201d T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he acute exercises specifically were consistently boosting endocannabinoid levels across the studies they reviewed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of the endocannabinoid levels, they found that those levels were elevated across various types of exercise, including the likes of running, swimming, and even weight-lifting. These results were consistent regardless of any potential preexisting health conditions. Additionally, endocannabinoid levels were raised more effectively from moderate levels of intensity in contrast to lower intensity exercises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, the effects in those studies were most consistent with a \u201cchemical messenger known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/what-is-anandamide\/\">anandamide<\/a>\u2014the so-called \u2018bliss\u2019 molecule, which was named, in part, for its positive effects on mood [as opposed to endorphins].\u201d W<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hile endorphins were thought to be the reason behind the runner\u2019s high, studies now point to endocannabinoids \u201cas the star players in the runner\u2019s high.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the researchers, these studies demonstrated that when opioid receptors were blocked, people still experienced euphoria. In comparison, when the cannabinoid receptors were blocked, there was a reduction in the beneficial effects of exercise (the euphoria). So, what exactly are endocannabinoids?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Endocannabinoids and Runner&#8217;s High<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people do not realize that our bodies make their own versions of cannabinoids like CBD and THC called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endocannabinoids<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The &#8220;endo&#8221; part of endocannabinoid refers \u201cto those [cannabinoid compounds] produced in the body rather than from a plant or in a lab.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like endocannabinoids, cannabinoids from the cannabis plant bind to the receptors in the endocannabinoid system, which promotes homeostasis in the body. When cannabinoids from the plant bind to the ECS, the number of endocannabinoids is essentially increased\u2014regardless of the fact that the increase does not come from within the body itself. This then means there are more agents in your body that seek to restore balance and health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So endocannabinoids and cannabinoids work similarly within the body but are derived from different sources\u2014which is why running does not have the same effect on the body as smoking cannabis.
