Groff North America is proud to be producing research-grade marijuana, so we can continue growing the field of cannabis-based medicine,&#8221; reads an official statement from the company&#8217;s website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Steve Groff established the company. He took inspired action to found Groff North America after years of acknowledging the plant&#8217;s therapeutic benefits. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also emphasized the fact that medical cannabis programs are now legal in 37 states, as well as <\/span>four out of five inhabited U.S. territories.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou don&#8217;t take that opium poppy and ask a patient to rub it on their lip for morphine. It gets processed, it\u2019s been FDA-approved,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox43.com\/article\/news\/health\/medical-marijuana-cannabis-pharmaceutical-drugs-transition\/521-fc9f1bc3-dca1-4f4e-8a76-123588bfd8fe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Groff said to reporters<\/a>\u00a0as he compared the cannabis plant&#8217;s use to that of poppy flowers, which must first be prepared before they can be turned into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/marijuana-vs-opioids-which-is-more-effective-for-treating-pain\/\">opioid medications<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Federally Illegal Status of Cannabis Has Hindered Its Use in Medicine<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since cannabis is still a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/drug-information\/drug-scheduling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schedule I substance under U.S. federal law<\/a>, it has not yet been used in any commonly prescribed medicines. Fortunately, the brakes are gradually being lifted on research opportunities. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that U.S. lawmakers could soon be appreciating the green plant for its remedial qualities and, as a direct effect, the plant&#8217;s federally illegal status could be lifted thereafter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know that the plant has powerful potential medical effects, but it clearly needs more refinement, more research and more data,\u201d stated Groff, who envisions a future where patients can easily access ailment-targeted cannabis meds. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Groff confirmed that it had completed its first batch of medicinal-grade cannabis for research purposes on Feb. 28. The company initiated the first legal transfer (as deemed by federal law) to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)<\/span>. This means that the medical and scientific communities can now celebrate broader access to research for the production of pharmaceutical products that are safer than smokable or vaporizable cannabis.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLighting something on fire and passing it through your lungs is probably not the best way to treat that illness,\u201d said Hodgin, who predicts that researchers will, someday, harbor solid proof of cannabis\u2019 ability to treat widespread conditions like autism, anxiety, cancer, epilepsy, insomnia, inflammation, pain, Parkinson\u2019s disease, PTSD, and Tourette syndrome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/zeliratx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zelira Therapeutics<\/a> is also pushing for the approval of cannabis-based medicines in the American market, one of which is a drug for insomnia. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI look forward to a time when they are not considered alternative therapies or home remedies but actually first-line therapies,\u201d said the CEO of Zelira, Oludare Odumosu.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe could potentially develop north of 11,000 drugs that are cannabinoid-based. Is the future exciting? Absolutely.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another company that has been given the green light to produce cannabis for research is Castroville, CA-headquartered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biopharmaresearchco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biopharmaceutical Research Company<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the company\u2019s CEO, George Hodgin, \u201cfederally legal FDA- and DEA-approved cannabis-based drugs will absolutely upend the traditional pharmaceutical market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Cannabis-Based Medicines Have Been Approved So Far?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The debate surrounding cannabis&#8217; potentially therapeutic powers has ensued for decades. In particular, of all the components contained in the cannabis plant\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/cannabinoids-and-the-endocannabinoid-system-a-match-made-in-heaven\/\">cannabinoids<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/understanding-cannabis-terpenes-and-their-effects\/\">terpenes<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/what-are-flavonoids-how-do-they-work-and-are-they-therapeutic\/\">flavonoids<\/a>\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the cannabis compound <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/uncovering-thc-the-cannabis-plants-most-famous-cannabinoid\/\">tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)<\/a> has proven to harbor medicinal benefits when used in specific formulations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dronabinol (Marinol\u00ae) and nabilone (Cesamet\u00ae) have already been approved for prescription purposes by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) when offered in pill form to cancer chemotherapy patients, as well as <\/span>people who endure appetite loss and\/or wasting syndrome caused by AIDS.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, numerous other cannabis-based medications have already gained approval or are in the process of being tested in clinical trials. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the <\/span>non-intoxicating compound <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/veriheals-complete-guide-to-cbd-heres-everything-you-need-to-know\/\">cannabidiol (CBD)<\/a> is combined with the psychotropic compound THC for the creation of an oral spray called nabiximols (Sativex\u00ae), which is currently being offered in Canada and a handful of European countries, including the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBD is also contained in another FDA-approved medicine called Epidiolex\u00ae. The pharmaceutical drug, which is created by British drug company GW Pharmaceuticals, is designed to ease the symptoms of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in young patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Challenges in Conducting Medical Cannabis Research Remain<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/drug-information\/csa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Controlled Substances Act of 1970<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> classified the plant as a Schedule I drug and, since this time, cannabis has remained an illegal substance under U.S. federal law. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of these restrictive laws, the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">federal government enforces harsh rules that make it impossible for researchers to investigate the pros, cons, and safety of cannabis products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until more research efforts take place, little will be known about cannabis&#8217; suitability for treating patients who suffer from a wide range of diseases and illnesses.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, for more research to be conducted, policymakers<\/span> must first dig a little deeper and garner sufficient evidence of the plant&#8217;s worthiness to be rescheduled under U.S. federal law, from which point, informed choices can be made about the use of cannabis and cannabinoids.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cannabis, despite being widely available for medical and recreational consumers across the United States, remains one of the most understudied plants.\u00a0Fortunately, the U.S. federal government is granting a handful of American companies the option to cultivate and study cannabis for medical research purposes.
