{"id":25542,"date":"2023-01-05T08:00:26","date_gmt":"2023-01-05T13:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/?p=25542"},"modified":"2026-03-27T08:42:00","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T12:42:00","slug":"clinical-trial-explores-cbds-influence-on-cannabis-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/clinical-trial-explores-cbds-influence-on-cannabis-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Clinical Trial Explores CBD\u2019s Influence on Cannabis Safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/365430505_Does_cannabidiol_make_cannabis_safer_A_randomised_double-blind_cross-over_trial_of_cannabis_with_four_different_CBDTHC_ratios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">randomized, double-blind, cross-over trial of cannabis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently published by Research Gate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0explored whether or not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/cbd\/\">cannabidiol (CBD)<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the primary non-intoxicating constituent of cannabis and hemp<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improves or reduces the cannabis safety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers assessed the effects of four different CBD:THC ratios, only to discover that CBD does not protect against the acute adverse effects of cannabis. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/uncovering-thc-the-cannabis-plants-most-famous-cannabinoid\/\">THC<\/a> (short for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the primary psychotropic element of the marijuana plant, found in the leaves and flowers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of global cannabis consumers is increasing, with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/teams\/mental-health-and-substance-use\/alcohol-drugs-and-addictive-behaviours\/drugs-psychoactive\/cannabis#:~:text=About%20147%20million%20people%2C%202.5,than%20cocaine%20and%20opiate%20abuse.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">147 million people, or 2.5% of the planet&#8217;s population<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, consuming cannabis annually. With that being said, as well as the fact that more countries around the world are loosening their laws, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is more important than ever to pinpoint strategies that can minimize the harmful effects of cannabis use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About the Study Into CBD\u2019s Influence on Cannabis Safety<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To carry out their study on cannabis safety, researchers recruited 46 healthy, infrequent cannabis consumers. They chose each person to participate in a double-blind, within-subject, randomized trial. Study subjects were administered cannabis preparations that varied in CBD content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An initial baseline visit was followed by four drug administration visits, during which subjects inhaled vaporized cannabis enriched with 10 milligrams THC and one of the following CBD:THC ratios:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0 milligrams (0:1 CBD:THC)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 milligrams (1:1)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 milligrams (2:1)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30 milligrams (3:1)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delayed verbal recall on the Hopkins Verbal Learning Task<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> assessment that requires the memorization of a list of words to test one\u2019s capability to recall directly after memorization (immediate recall) and after a 20-minute delay (delayed recall)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was revealed to be the primary outcome of cannabis administration. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fluctuations in the severity of psychotic symptoms (e.g., Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale [PANSS] positive subscale) were highlighted as the secondary outcomes of cannabis consumption, in addition to various other cognitive, subjective, pleasurable, pharmacological, and physiological effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serial plasma concentrations of THC and CBD were also measured. As per the results, THC (0:1) was linked to delayed verbal recall impairment and induced positive psychotic symptoms on the PANSS. These effects were not majorly modulated by CBD, regardless of the dosage\u2014a discovery that the study authors say should be considered in future health policy and safety decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, the researchers noted that there was no solid proof of CBD regulating the effects of THC on other cognitive, psychotic, subjective, pleasurable, and physiological measures. On the other hand, they observed a dose-response connection between CBD dose and plasma CBD concentration, with no noticeable effect on plasma THC concentrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The CBD Market Is Growing at an Exponential Rate<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the rapid growth of the CBD industry, more emphasis must be placed on consumer safety. A separate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.databridgemarketresearch.com\/checkout\/buy\/enterprise\/global-cannabidiol-market?PNW\/18Aug2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published by Data Bridge Market research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spotlighted the sheer size of the CBD market. The industry is predicted to inflate at a growth rate of 27.8% between now and 2029, and it shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBD\u2019s diversity is attracting immense demand from buyers and investors, who are indulged with products from key players like Aurora Cannabis, Canopy Growth Corporation, The Cronos Group, Charlotte\u2019s Web, Curaleaf, Elixinol Wellness Limited, HEXO Corp, Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Diamond CBD, ENDOCA, Medterra CBD, Green Roads, VIVO Cannabis Inc., Gaia Herbs Hemp, and Joy Organics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cannabinoid is being utilized for a broad spectrum of medical problems, such as chronic pain, stress, anxiety, sleep\/insomnia, skin care, migraine, seizures, neurological conditions, and inflammation. By acting on biological processes in the body, the cannabis compound can exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Cannabis Consumption Increased Post-Pandemic, Stimulating Research<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flowhub.com\/cannabis-industry-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statistics published by Flowhub<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicate that 50% of cannabis users have increased their consumption since the pandemic. With the steady rise in consumption, we are likely to see more research efforts taking place. Fortunately, things seem to be moving in the right direction, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/the-medical-marijuana-and-cannabidiol-research-expansion-act-has-passed\/\">new bill signed by President Joe Biden<\/a> lending promise for cannabis research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act aims to ease <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/californias-cannabis-businesses-continue-to-struggle-under-federal-limitations\/\">federal limitations<\/a> on scientific research into the Schedule I controlled substance. It was signed by Biden on Dec. 20. Before it received his signature, the House of Representatives passed the bill during the summer, followed by U.S. Senate approval.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is exciting,\u201d said the director of the Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids at the University of California (UC) Los Angeles, Ziva Cooper. \u201cThe bill is a significant step forward with respect to chipping away at the barriers for research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being welcomed by other cannabis researchers, many industry experts are disappointed by the new law.
