{"id":33000,"date":"2024-01-22T08:00:47","date_gmt":"2024-01-22T13:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/?p=33000"},"modified":"2025-03-17T11:48:56","modified_gmt":"2025-03-17T15:48:56","slug":"cos-gun-rights-proposal-mds-rec-success-nms-little-amsterdam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/cos-gun-rights-proposal-mds-rec-success-nms-little-amsterdam\/","title":{"rendered":"CO&#8217;s Gun Rights Proposal, MD&#8217;s Rec Success, &#038; NM&#8217;s Little Amsterdam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maryland celebrates one year of recreational sales, \u201cLittle Amsterdam\u201d pops up on the Texas-New Mexico border, and voters advocate to empower cannabis consumers in their Second Amendment right.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what you missed this week in cannabis and psychedelic news.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Colorado Ballot Proposal Would Allow Concealed Carry Permits for Cannabis Users<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/content\/criteria-obtaining-concealed-handgun-permit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposed law in Colorado<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, backed by the advocacy group Guns for Everyone, seeks to allow cannabis users permits to carry concealed guns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, as marijuana is still illegal on a federal level, cannabis users are generally <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/mmj-and-gun-rights-can-a-medical-cannabis-patient-own-a-gun\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not permitted to purchase a firearm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, particularly with the HSS <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/hhs-calls-for-rescheduling-cannabis-in-historic-step-for-u-s-cannabis-reform\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">call to reschedule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cannabis, both cannabis and gun advocacy groups are pushing back on this law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Colorado measure, set for a public hearing, aims to allow cannabis users to carry concealed firearms in public, arguing for equal rights with alcohol users. If passed, the state would not be able to deny cannabis users from applying for their concealed carry permit on the premise of their cannabis use alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All eyes are on the Centennial State as they move to set a precedent for other states to follow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Maryland Cannabis Industry Reaches New Heights in Its First Year of Rec Sales\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maryland&#8217;s recreational market reached <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mmcc.maryland.gov\/Documents\/2024%20News%20Releases\/Maryland%20Cannabis%20Administration%20Releases%202023%20Sales%20Data%20and%20Launches%20Medical%20and%20Adult-use%20Cannabis%20Data%20Dashboard.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$700 million dollars in sales<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in its first year. And adult-use cannabis isn\u2019t the only market that was affected. MD medical cannabis saw a $200 million increase in the first 5 months of 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The state is using some of the revenue from these sales to benefit different communities statewide, including the state&#8217;s cannabis public health fund and a state cannabis business assistance fund.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recreational cannabis sales include a 9% sales tax charged that goes toward health, business, social equity, and the state&#8217;s general fund. Maryland <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/maryland\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">med card holders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on the other hand, are exempt from this 9% tax.\u00a0 Nevertheless, the state is also taking measures to make sure that the industry is diversified by issuing 75 new social equity licenses through lottery to those disproportionately impacted by the war on drugs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Texas Residents Fuel a \u201cLittle Amsterdam\u201d in New Mexico<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Mexico\u2019s recreational cannabis program officially began in 2012. Ever since, the New Mexico cannabis industry has been helping boost the economy in tiny towns like Sunland Park.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With 16 active dispensaries and a little over 17,000 residents, Sunland Park often welcomes cannabis enthusiasts from other states \u2013 Texas in particular. Since recreational cannabis is not legal in Texas, many TX residents have been crossing the border into Sunland to purchase and consume.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This phenomenon is so common that Cannabis Business Executive deemed it \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little Amsterdam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d Dispensaries have even started offering \u201cTexan Tuesday\u201d deals to welcome and cater to out-of-state visitors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should Colorado cannabis users have the right to purchase guns?
