Alabama&#8217;s medical cannabis program allows licensed dispensaries to sell inhalers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/cannabis-101\/topical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">topical lotions<\/a>, suppositories, tablets, nebulizers, and edibles. Additionally, cannabis patients are not allowed to grow, buy, or smoke weed and other inhalable combustibles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, when it was announced that Alabama&#8217;s medical marijuana program would only allow peach-flavored edibles, it sparked a lot of conversation online. Apart from this recent 2023 announcement, the Cotton State seems to have a track record of strict cannabis programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we&#8217;ll take a closer look at Alabama&#8217;s cannabis regulations and the reason behind some of the recent developments &#8212; as well as marijuana legalization in other states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Examining Medical Marijuana in Alabama<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June 2023, after many years of delay, Alabama finally made significant progress in its marijuana program.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2023\/06\/alabama-medical-cannabis-commission-awards-licenses-to-21-companies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twenty-one<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0businesses received licenses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) to legally plant, process, test, sell, and distribute medical cannabis. But, the state\u2019s legislation forbids smoking and consuming medical marijuana in food (with the exception of peach-flavored edibles).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because Alabama has not yet legalized recreational cannabis, only patients with one or more of the 15 qualifying conditions can access medical marijuana in Alabama. Some of these health issues include depression, cancer,\u00a0 seizures, Parkinson\u2019s disease, Crohn\u2019s disease, post-traumatic stress disorder (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/ptsd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTSD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), chronic pain, and sickle cell anemia. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/alabama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alabama patients<\/a> would also need to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/find-a-medical-marijuana-doctor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get a medical marijuana card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to purchase weed from authorized dispensaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u201cProtecting the Kids\u201d is the Cotton State\u2019s Priority<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allowing only peach-flavored edibles is probably one of the strangest marijuana regulations you&#8217;ll find in the United States. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Alabama regulators have explained that they believe it&#8217;s the best way to protect the younger ones from accidentally eating cannabis gummies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, edible manufacturers are banned from packaging their products using languages, cartoons, images, and other fictional characters that minors might love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It so happens that the one-flavor development is not the first time lawmakers have justified the regulation of adult products in a bid to \u201ckeep the kids safe.\u201d In 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-finalizes-enforcement-policy-unauthorized-flavored-cartridge-based-e-cigarettes-appeal-children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flavored e-cigarette<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cartridges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephen Hahn. who was the FDA Commissioner, explained that the initiative was adopted to &#8220;combat the troubling epidemic of youth e-cigarette use.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He further explained the need to eliminate &#8220;certain flavored e-cigarette products we know are so appealing to teenagers\u2014so-called cartridge-based products that are both easy to use and easily concealable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Nonetheless, it\u2019s quite ironic that many ex-smokers reported that flavored vape cartridges made it easier for them to stop smoking tobacco cigarettes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Why Peach-flavored Edibles?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the new regulation, and as explained by Brian Lyman, an Editor at Alabama Reflector, kids are more likely to be less interested in peach-flavored eatables. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, the law has mandated that the edibles be made in gelatinous cubes to further discourage children from finding them appealing. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AMCC believes that the shape will make it easy to separate the edibles from regular children&#8217;s candies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2023\/06\/alabamas-medical-marijuana-gummies-can-only-be-peach-flavored-heres-why.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyman revealed to AL.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u201cWhen medical marijuana was on its way to becoming legal, there was a debate on the Senate floor about trying to keep the gummies away from children.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also stated that \u201cAt one point, the bill said it would have no taste, but (state Sen. Tim) Melson said that would cause people to gag. So the compromise was a single flavor.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tasked with the responsibility of selecting a flavor, AMCC eventually chose the peach, and Lyman further speculated that \u201cMaybe peach isn\u2019t as attractive to people?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What The Public Thinks of Peachy Medical Marijuana in Alabama<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People have taken to social media platforms to express their opinions on Alabama allowing only peach-flavored gummies, and there seem to be mixed reactions on the matter. Check out the following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Alabama\/comments\/148gh9b\/alabamas_medical_marijuana_gummies_can_only_be\/?rdt=45389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comments made by some Reddit users<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nude_Dr_Doom: \u201cThey say that peach would be a lesser desired flavor for children? Cigarettes taste like ashtrays and didn&#8217;t stop whole generations.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">servenitup: \u201cI thought this was hilarious. Sent it to my grandma who has an MM card in another state. Response: \u201cPeach is the worst flavor!\u201d Lol\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dinco_laVache: \u201cHow can you not like peach flavor?!! If they don\u2019t want kids to take it, use whatever artificial grape they use to flavor cough medicine.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GreenLightAlabama: \u201cI have to say I&#8217;m pleasantly surprised by this choice. Since the point of having just one flavor is to prevent the gummies from appealing to children, I figured they&#8217;d choose something that is typically not &#8220;yummy&#8221; for kids, like mint.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Cannabis Legislations In Other States.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from Alabama, other states have adopted marijuana regulations that were aimed at protecting kids from consuming weed.\u00a0 Some of these states and their laws include:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Maryland<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/maryland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland<\/a> delayed the launch of its medical cannabis program in 2019 to develop an edible appearance that ensures \u201cthe safety of minors.&#8221; Back then, Senator Robert Cassilly (R) said he didn\u2019t \u201cwant to deprive anyone of their medication, but let&#8217;s treat this like medicine, not make little gummy bears out of it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>New York<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York<\/a> has prohibited the marketing and promotion of marijuana consumables in a way that appeals to kids and minors. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This measure had to be put in place because it seemed like things were getting out of hand, as explained by Katherine Keyes, a Columbia University epidemiologist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If you go through a [New York] cannabis dispensary right now, it&#8217;s almost absurd how youth-oriented a lot of the packaging and the products are,&#8221; Keyes noted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Colorado<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/colorado\/\">Colorado<\/a> lawmakers unanimously agreed to ban edibles shaped like fruits, people, or animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Washington<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/washington\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington<\/a> legislators disallowed the use of bright colors in making edibles. Cannabis products had to conform to a &#8220;standard Pantone color book that sets the list of colors and specified ranges within those colors.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What to Look Out For<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the restriction on the flavor of edibles in Alabama, it is good that cannabis products are at least available for those who need them.
