The announcement comes a short 18 months after it became the first Asian country to decriminalize cannabis back in June 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he was elected in September 2023, New Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced his intent to recriminalize the plant and only allow medical use. Two months after his election, Thavisin and a conservative coalition initially attempted to reverse the historic move; however, the draft bill failed to gain parliamentary approval.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The newest decriminalization bill introduced in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/10\/asia\/thailand-cannabis-reverse-proposed-laws-intl-hnk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">January 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meanwhile, seems to have the support to pass. If it does, individuals caught using cannabis recreationally may face hefty fines and up to one year of imprisonment. Further, the new law would also ban the marketing and advertising of marketing products.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Thailands Short Stint As A Canna-Tourism Hotspot<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a financial standpoint, it\u2019s hard not to recognize the success of Thailand\u2019s decriminalization move. A short nine months after decriminalization, nearly 6,000 licenses for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-cannabis-tourism-asia-ad54d1ff0ba57ecaadf75aa48072f8db#:~:text=Through%20February%2C%20nearly%206%2C000%20licenses%20for%20cannabis%2Drelated%20businesses%20have%20been%20approved%2C%20including%20more%20than%201%2C600%20in%20Bangkok%20alone%2C%20according%20to%20official%20figures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cannabis-related businesses were approved<\/a>, with 1,600 coming from just Bangkok. This number doesn\u2019t even account for the countless weed cafes, hemp spas, and consumption lounges that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0popped up all over the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thailand\u2019s location made it appealing to tourists from nearby Asian countries with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/thailand-says-yes-to-cannabis\/#:~:text=Asia%20Doesn%E2%80%99t%20Have,in%20late%202021.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incredibly strict laws against cannabis use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Not to mention that Thailand had already established itself as a destination of tourists taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/thailand-lays-out-plans-for-canna-tourism-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201chealth and wellness\u201d-centered vacations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prior to decriminalization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With these two factors in mind, it\u2019s no surprise that Thailand\u2019s canna-tourism industry found immediate success. In fact, The Thai Chamber of Commerce estimated cannabis sector would be worth <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/cannabis-market-in-thailand-seen-growing-to-1-2-billion-by-2025-1.1794917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.2 billion by 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That said, these lofty projections and the excitement around Thailand\u2019s growing cannabis tourism are now unlikely to come to fruition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Despite Success \u2014 Thailand Never Wanted Canna-Tourism\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thailand\u2019s decriminalization of cannabis was never meant to legalize recreational use \u2014 let alone kick start a frenzy of cannabis tourism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Shortly before decriminalization went into effect, Thailand\u2019s former Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul spoke with CNN. In the interview, Charnvirakul explicitly outlined what decriminalization would and would not allow. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/06\/09\/asia\/thailand-cannabis-legal-minister-interview-intl-hnk\/index.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThailand%20will%20promote,freely%2C%20that%E2%80%99s%20wrong.\">He told CNN that<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThailand will promote cannabis policies for medical purposes. If [tourists] come for medical treatment or come for health-related products, then it\u2019s not an issue, but if you think that you want to come to Thailand just because you heard that cannabis or marijuana is legal \u2026 [or] come to Thailand to smoke joints freely, that\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to Thailand\u2019s clear warnings, surrounding countries also put out similar messaging. China\u2019s Thai embassy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-cannabis-tourism-asia-ad54d1ff0ba57ecaadf75aa48072f8db#:~:text=is%20considered%20equivalent%20to%20using%20drugs%20domestically.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warned Chinese citizens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that visiting Thailand to consume cannabis \u201c&#8230;is considered equivalent to using drugs domestically,&#8221; meaning returning tourists are subject to harsh legal penalties. Singapore, meanwhile, announced that travelers caught bringing back cannabis or hemp products from Thailand <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/thailand\/general\/2336588\/weed-warning-from-singapore-s-korea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are subject to the death penalty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite these warnings, the manager of a cannabis shop in Bangkok estimates that at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thailand-cannabis-tourism-asia-ad54d1ff0ba57ecaadf75aa48072f8db#:~:text=There%20are%20no,some%20from%20Europe.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70%-80% of his customers are foreigners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent interview with Bloomberg TV, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin explained that the explosion of illegal recreational cannabis use by tourists and locals was a big reason why he and his party wanted to re-criminalize the plant. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/09\/29\/asia\/thailand-cannabis-clampdown-what-next-intl-hnk\/index.html#:~:text=Newly%20appointed%20Thai,that%2C%E2%80%9D%20Thavisin%20said.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe problem of drugs has been widespread lately, especially in the northeastern and northern parts of Thailand.
