Just recently, a group of swimmers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/20\/world\/asia\/chinese-swimmers-doping-olympics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">became extra newsworthy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for winning Olympic Gold when they had tested positive for a banned drug months earlier. Indeed, debates surrounding drug usage in professional sports have typically been focused on performance-enhancing stimulants in endurance and power sports.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curious about where cannabis stands? With the PGA (Professional Golfers&#8217; Association of America) Tour in full swing, we delved into the status of cannabis in golf. Does the PGA actually care about players using cannabis, or are the regulations more of a formality?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Player Handbook<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand the PGA\u2019s most updated policies for players, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/qualifying.pgatourhq.com\/static-assets\/uploads\/2024-PGA%20TOUR%20Player%20Handbook%20and%20Regulations-1-1-24[70].pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 PGA Tour Player Handbook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is accessible to the public.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the handbook does not name any specific drugs, it does speak broadly about their policies. The PGA explains that \u201c[violations] relating to Drugs of Abuse shall be subject to fine, suspension and\/or permanent disbarment from tournament play as provided in these Regulations.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, players found to violate the Association\u2019s drug policies may face a range of consequences, with the most severe being permanent disbarment. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other end of the spectrum, players may be required to receive some kind of treatment or rehab. The handbook reads, \u201cFor violations of the PGA TOUR Anti-Doping Program related to Drugs of Abuse, an approved plan of treatment and rehabilitation to be conducted at the player\u2019s expense, in addition to or in lieu of other penalties may be imposed.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this way, the handbook keeps the consequences related to drug violations vague and open-ended, with situations handled on a case-by-case basis. But what do these violations entail, and where does cannabis specifically fit in?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than being outlined in the handbook, these details are in the Anti-Doping Manual referenced throughout the handbook.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Anti-Doping Manual<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usga.org\/content\/dam\/usga\/pdf\/2018\/2017-2018_Anti_Doping_Manual.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PGA Tour Anti-Doping Program Manual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> goes into drug policies with much more thorough detail, speaking to cannabis specifically. They clarify that both \u201cnatural and synthetic\u201d cannabis is prohibited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps most interesting, however, is the manual\u2019s acknowledgment that in contrast to some other drugs, cannabis is not performance-enhancing. They explain, \u201cAthletes are unlikely to use cannabinoids to improve their performance; however, some athletes have used cannabinoids to decrease anxiety before a competition.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>So, Why is it Banned?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the PGA\u2019s admission that cannabinoids are not a likely choice for performance enhancement, why are they still banned?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The manual explains, \u201cMarijuana is illegal under federal law and in most other countries. Involvement with illegal substances goes against the spirit of our sport.\u201d This means that the PGA\u2019s banning of marijuana is part of their ethos of adhering to broader federal and national laws. The manual then goes on to outline potential health risks, but it does not say anything else about cannabis-specific violations or issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>PGA Drug Testing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, the PGA\u2019s official stance in their Player Handbook and Anti-Doping Manual is only one aspect of how they view and treat cannabis. What do their drug testing policies look like?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the PGA did not always test, they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/golfweek.usatoday.com\/2019\/03\/22\/pga-tour-drug-policy-marijuana-robert-garrigus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced in 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that they would begin blood testing. Prior to this, only urine testing was done, and it seemed to be relatively lax\u2014player <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/golfweek.usatoday.com\/2016\/07\/13\/rory-mcilroy-slams-golf-drug-testing-says-he-could-get-away-with-using-hgh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rory McIlroy said in 2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI could use HGH (human growth hormone) and get away with it,\u201d McIlroy said. \u201cSo I think blood testing is something that needs to happen in golf just to make sure that it is a clean sport going forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Suspensions Due to Cannabis Use<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, it does seem that the altered policies in 2017 marked a shift in the PGA cracking down harder on marijuana usage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/golf.com\/news\/matt-every-suspended-12-weeks-violating-pga-tours-drug-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matt Every was suspended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for 12 weeks for violating the PGA Tour\u2019s drug policies. Every released a statement, saying that the violation was due to cannabis, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a drug I do not abuse and a drug that I have a legal prescription for in the state of Florida.\u201d And only three months prior, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/golf.com\/news\/weed-legal-golf-pga-tour-robert-garrigus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Garrigus was suspended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for three months after testing positive for THC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Every and Garrigus expressed in their statements that they felt the policies were unfair, and they advocated for players\u2019 ability to use cannabis for medicinal purposes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/golf\/news\/robert-garrigus-returns-marijuana-suspension-i-dont-cheat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garrigus told NBC,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c\u200b\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have some sort of pain and CBD or THC may help that, and you feel like it can help you and be prescribed by a doctor, then what are we doing?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Moving Forward<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite these suspensions in 2017 and 2019, it seems promising that cannabis-related suspensions in the PGA have been largely absent from headlines since then. Given that not only have players spoken out about their disagreement with the cannabis ban, but the PGA themselves also state that it is not a drug used for performance enhancement, we hope that these policies can be changed over time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because players have discussed how cannabis helps them with mental health and pain relief, greater tolerance of cannabis would seem to be well-received by players while still allowing for a fair game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The use of drugs in professional sports has made headlines for decades.
