Our first metaphorical steps are the processes we instinctively use to propel ourselves from a seed into a sapling. Basic functions like breathing, suckling, crying, reflexes, evacuating, and more are essential for survival in our earliest, most vulnerable stages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The newborn phase, infancy, and childhood are critical periods for laying down the foundation for a healthy life. These populations each require personalized guidance, care, and patience. Babies and children need a lot of nutritional, emotional, medical, developmental, and hygienic maintenance from parents and caregivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During these times, there&#8217;s a natural inclination to be attentive to all the possible foods, liquids, and substances going into their developing brain and body. With this in mind, let\u2019s begin our journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Infancy and Cannabinoids<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where the distinction between endocannabinoids and plant-based cannabinoids is key. Endocannabinoids are naturally present and safe from birth. However, cannabis and impairing cannabinoids like THC carry negative short and long-term health and legal consequences if introduced during this stage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By contrast, nonintoxicating prescription CBD can be a literal lifesaver for some infants and children over age 1 who are affected by certain rare pediatric epilepsies. This is because our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/cannabinoids-and-the-endocannabinoid-system-a-match-made-in-heaven\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endocannabinoid system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ECS) comes built-in and activated right from the start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a CB1 activator, THC is impairing and can hijack the developing endocannabinoid system and cause lasting issues. Meanwhile, CBD doesn\u2019t activate CB1 receptors, so it doesn\u2019t cause a high, but it can increase endocannabinoid levels, slow enzymes, and activate important, non-cannabinoid receptors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The ECS During Infancy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endocannabinoids are believed to play a critical role in early development and newborn physiology. Animals like cows and humans naturally have endocannabinoids in their milk, but the reasons aren\u2019t clear. Since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6770351\/#:~:text=1.%20Introduction,with%20cannabinoid%20receptors.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virtually all animals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have an endocannabinoid system, there\u2019s room for influence at any age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know that endocannabinoids gently stimulate CB receptors and the ECS to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4120766\/#:~:text=An%20analogy%20has,%2C%20144%5D.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lesser degree and differently<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than plant-based ones. In fact, an intact ECS is needed for healthy development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exact role of endocannabinoids during this time is still being understood. However, based on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8308542\/#:~:text=4.%20Discussion,in%20early%20life.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some of the emerging findings on the ECS and development are that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal models show CB1 activation is critical for:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infant feeding behavior<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initiating suckling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growth\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Development<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human breast milk has endocannabinoids like:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trace amounts of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/what-is-anandamide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anandamide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AEA)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,000 times more 2-AG than AEA<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2-AG levels in breast milk are high during the day and drop at night<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like hormones, endocannabinoids fluctuate with our circadian rhythm<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what do these mean, and how do they affect our parenting choices?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Breastfeeding<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When discussing infancy, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/cannabis-and-breastfeeding\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is generally recommended for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8308542\/#:~:text=1.%20Introduction,cannabis%20%5B10%5D.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first 6\u201312 months<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but not all pregnant parents are able to, plan to, or choose to nurse or breastfeed their newborn \u2013 and that\u2019s okay. Everyone\u2019s family and stories are different, but if breastfeeding is part of your postpartum plans, it\u2019s essential to know how cannabis factors in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast milk is a nutritionally rich and densely fatty substance, lending it well to form endocannabinoids and absorb cannabinoids, as well as hormones, medications, and substances. Endocannabinoids like 2-AG and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/what-is-anandamide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anandamide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are naturally present in breast milk, in levels that rise and fall with day and night rhythms (diurnal pattern).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This diurnal fluctuation in endocannabinoids may help the infant develop a better sense of day and night. This may help infants tune their own circadian rhythm \u2013 without consciously interpreting environmental information like the moon and sun. The effects of endocannabinoids on infancy and breastfeeding are a promising area of ongoing research.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cannabis and Breast Milk<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, plant-based cannabinoids like THC can also easily make their way into breast milk <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7079319\/#:~:text=Results%3A,of%20harm%20reduction.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within an hour<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and quickly pass on to the infant. Once ingested by the milk donor, THC can linger in breast milk for anywhere from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK501587\/#:~:text=Summary%20of%20Use,%2D12%5D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 days to 6 weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THC is moderately strong at activating CB1, the receptor we mentioned before as significant for development. But THC acts differently than our endocannabinoids and isn\u2019t good for infants and children. More importantly, cannabis use during pregnancy and breastfeeding can result in lasting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7079319\/#:~:text=Results%3A,of%20harm%20reduction.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cognitive, social, and motor deficits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis use doesn\u2019t appear to negatively affect how long lactation lasts, but it can compromise the safety of breastfeeding due to several biological, consumption, and legal factors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introducing impairing cannabinoids like THC to the infant causes adverse short and long-term neurodevelopmental and social effects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Positive urine drug screens in newborns trigger CPS involvement and subsequent legal implications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any pesticides, chemicals, unknown compounds, or solvent residues on low-quality, street cannabis, or dubious unregulated products can bring harm<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking cannabis, or anything else, creates second-hand smoke that must be avoided by the infant to prevent sudden infant death syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, this doesn\u2019t mean that every single cannabinoid is off the table for infants and children. In fact, for some, it\u2019s a lifesaving medication. Enter the world of prescription CBD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Rare Childhood Epilepsies<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain pediatric patients as young as one are eligible for prescription CBD in the form of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2020\/210365s005s006s007lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pharmaceutical Epidiolex\u00ae<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Attaining Epidiolex is an expensive, lengthy, and difficult process involving specialists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Europe, CBDV is an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/go.drugbank.com\/drugs\/DB14050#:~:text=Cannabidivarin%20is%20being,Syndrome%2014.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approved orphan drug for seizures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Rett and Fragile X syndromes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Autism Spectrum Disorder<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is linked to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imrpress.com\/journal\/FBE\/14\/1\/10.31083\/j.fbe1401001\/htm#:~:text=Several%20studies%20have,%2C%2028%5D.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ECS alterations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. CBD-dominant therapy may help relieve many of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/14728214.2024.2306290#:~:text=Introduction,CBD%20treatment%20for%20ASD.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">core and behavioral symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/can.2024.0001#:~:text=Results%3A%20The,validate%20these%20findings.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antianxiety and antipsychotic properties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Clinical data are limited but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1111\/cch.12909#:~:text=Results%3A,trials%20is%20needed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overall promising and safe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with significant reductions in other medications. Like CBD, CBDV is also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/cbdv-research-shows-a-strong-potential-for-autism-spectrum-disorder\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promising for ASD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imrpress.com\/journal\/FBE\/14\/1\/10.31083\/j.fbe1401001\/htm#:~:text=Other%20cannabinoids%20including%20non%2Dpsychoactive%20cannabidivarin%20(CBDV)%20also%20contribute%20to%20the%20cannabis%20medicinal%20effects.%20Studies%20in%20animal%20models%20and%20humans%20advocated%20for%20anti%2Dinflammatory%2C%20neuroprotective%2C%20anxiolytic%2C%20and%20antipsychotic%20properties%20of%20cannabis%20compounds.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research is ongoing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism interventions are most effective when diagnosed and treated as early as possible.
