However, \u201crecreational\u201d use for teens isn\u2019t just about having fun since there are still some deeply complicated health and social angles to consider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we\u2019ll closely examine the fine line between therapeutic cannabis applications and problematic cannabis use in adolescents. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/yrbs\/dstr\/pdf\/YRBS-2023-Data-Summary-Trend-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2013-2023 CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that in 2023, 17% of high school students used cannabis in 30 days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, you may be surprised that this percentage is actually down from 25% over the last decade since 2013. It may be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6960330\/#:~:text=Discussion,are%20more%20credible.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thanks to states\u2019 decriminalization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and regulation efforts to keep cannabis out of kids\u2019 hands, but this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapediatrics\/article-abstract\/2817566#:~:text=The%20past%20decade,COVID%2D19%20pandemic.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t definitively proven yet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compare these figures to Veriheal&#8217;s demographic data, which indicates that only 221 qualified minors were certified for medical cannabis use in 2023, accounting for less than 1% of Veriheal&#8217;s total official medical cannabis patients that year. Without rushing to judgment or anger, there are several key considerations for tactfully approaching this delicate and complicated situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Peer Pressure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s actually normal that most cannabis users are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/can.2021.0163#:~:text=It%20is%20worth%20mentioning%20that%20most%20cannabis%20users%20are%20introduced%20to%20substance%20early%20on%20in%20their%20life%20by%20their%20peers.80%E2%80%9382\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduced to cannabis by peers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> relatively early on, most often in late adolescence. However, the context is critical.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media enables self-made content to spread faster and more efficiently than ever before, with about 77% of high school students using social media several times a day. But the developing brains of teens are particularly susceptible to its influence, misinformation, and addicting principles. Teens\u2019 underdeveloped sense of delayed gratification is a biological contributing factor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another important consideration is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6223748\/#:~:text=Despite%20these%20increases,Hasin%202018).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasingly reduced perception of harm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from relaxed policies and peers. These create significant health disparities like increased rates of depression, anxiety, suicide attempts, and abuse of alcohol, cannabis, opioids, and other substances. Acknowledging teen cannabis use as a desperate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6223748\/#:~:text=In%20a%20longitudinal,al.%202008).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attempt to ease anxiety, depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or an overwhelming social situation also alleviates judgment and enhances compassion and understanding.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Effects of Cannabis Use in Teens<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Medicinal Uses<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis use in adolescence isn&#8217;t all harmful. If medically supervised and dosed properly, the right dose, frequency, route, and selection of cannabinoids make a world of difference for many children and adolescents. Working closely with clinicians, therapists, and educational specialists can help you work through and overcome these challenges as a holistic, supportive, and nonjudgmental team. Without effective medications for CUD, aside from perhaps CBD, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8655458\/#:~:text=The%20optimal%20treatments,%E2%80%9320.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychosocial-based interventions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are first-line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents often wonder about the impact cannabis has on the developing brain and any lasting effects. Cognitive effects disappear within 72 hours after use, even among the heaviest users.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another commonly stereotyped misconception is cannabis and laziness. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/can.2023.0244#:~:text=Conclusion%3A%20Recent,chronic%20pain%20patients.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 data show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that cannabis may do the opposite, marginally increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior in young to midlife adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Smoking and Vaping Concerns<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis smoke shares a lot of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIR.0000000000000883#:~:text=Smoking%20and%20Vaping,is%20not%20known.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">same carcinogens and mutagens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as tobacco smoke. Avoiding cannabis smoking is recommended to prevent adverse effects like cardiovascular, airway, and physical problems. Vaping, smoking, or otherwise consuming any tobacco or nicotine products is even more addicting and unsafe, and they should never be recommended, either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaping cannabis oil or dabbing concentrates may rapidly increase tolerance and dependence risk compared to flower because of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/research-suggests-that-high-potency-thc-products-arent-for-everyone\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high THC potency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Individuals with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIR.0000000000000883#:~:text=Significant%20evidence%20from,5%2C12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genetic predisposition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to psychotic or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7385425\/#:~:text=Notwithstanding%20these%20theoretical,93%2C94\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mood disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should avoid THC at a young age and instead <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7385425\/#:~:text=Nevertheless%2C%20considering%20that,education%20to%20patients.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use CBD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under medical supervision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online vape products carry <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/can.2022.0126#:~:text=A%20newly%20published,are%20most%20prevalent.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potentially serious quality and safety concerns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because they often contain impurities and unknown byproducts, requiring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/safe-consumption-guide-how-to-read-a-certificate-of-analysis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">independent verification (COA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Semisynthetic hemp-based products like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/delta-8-vs-delta-9-vs-delta-10-thc-what-are-the-similarities-and-differences\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">delta-8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be impairing and habit-forming and may have unknown short and long-term health effects. They are also easier to set limits with.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis and CBD use in teens can be healthy, moderated, and legitimately used for myriad health issues with your doctor\u2019s approval and adequate supervision.
