In 2023, an astounding <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/284135\/percentage-americans-smoke-marijuana.aspx#:~:text=Seventeen%20percent%20of,falling%20between%20them.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26% of young American adults<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aged 18-34 reported smoking cannabis. By now, 50% of adults admit to trying it, and 70% of Americans support the legalization of cannabis \u2013 the highest number ever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you\u2019re taking cannabis for medical purposes, dual med-rec use, bonding with friends, or simply unwinding at the end of a long day, adult therapeutic use takes many practical forms. However, depending on the goals and intentions set, people still often tend to identify as one of these consumer types.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To your body, medical and recreational cannabis are one and the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a society, we\u2019ve come a long way towards accepting that the therapeutic uses of cannabis extend beyond purely medically-focused needs or the authorization of a healthcare provider. These matters are still important and will always be in cannabis medicine, but they\u2019re less critical as legal landscapes and public perception co-evolve.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Recreational vs. Medical<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In modern early adulthood, people become more open and less concerned about the stigma or perception of simply embracing nonmedical or \u201crecreational\u201d cannabis use. When nonmedical cannabis was legalized in Canada, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/can.2021.0128#:~:text=Share-,Abstract,use%20were%20more%20likely%20to%20declare%20exclusively%20nonmedical%20use%20after%20legalization.,-Introduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about 1 in 4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medical cannabis patients moved towards identifying as either dual-users or even exclusively nonmedical. This highlights the absurdity of the divide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I often see this internal conflict reflected in my clinical encounters. Sometimes, patients feel self-conscious about telling me they like the uplifting and euphoric side effects of their cannabis treatment plan, or that a large part of it is just to relax or help them fall asleep, worried if it\u2019s \u201cenough\u201d to justify their cannabis use (it is).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, Western medicine makes patients haggle for preferred treatments, so I understand this sentiment. But I love to reassure my adult patients that it\u2019s okay to enjoy your cannabis \u2013 you should!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis providers want you to have healing, positive experiences that come from benefits outweighing harms. Whichever camps you choose to join, we just want to be sure the rest of your health, social, and work life aren\u2019t negatively affected by it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Recreational Use<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managing life, home, work, family, and social stressors can be tough, especially all at the same time. Even people who use cannabis \u201cnon-medically\u201d are actually consuming it for a lot of the same symptoms and therapeutic purposes medical patients employ, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mood<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creativity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relaxation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impaired sleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increase enjoyment of recreational hobbies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enhance libido and improve sexual experiences<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Recreational Cannabis is Harm Reduction<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our consumption choices and how we spend our free time have profound influences on our habits and long-term health. In 2022, nationally representative data indicated for the first time that there are more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/add.16519#:~:text=Whereas%20the%201992,28.2%25%20vs.%203.8%25).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">daily and near-daily cannabis users<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than alcohol users. Now, 2024 survey results from New Frontier Data show <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newfrontierdata.com\/cannabis-insights\/the-kids-are-alright-tobacco-alcohol-and-cannabis-use-among-gen-z\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about 70% of adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aged 18-35 prefer cannabis to alcohol, with the youngest group (18-24) also avoiding tobacco the most.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, 2023 data reveal that recreational markets are associated with an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36764087\/#:~:text=The%20results%20revealed,opioid%20overdose%20fatalities.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11% average reduction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in opioid overdose fatalities. Altogether, these data demonstrate the therapeutic, harm-reducing effects of choosing cannabis over other drugs \u2013 regardless of medical intentions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to addictive potential and mortality, THC and cannabis rank among the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4311234\/#:~:text=Our%20MOE%20results,al.59).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">least harmful substances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared to recreational drugs like alcohol, tobacco, opioids, and more. While cannabis <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinicproceedings.org\/article\/S0025-6196(18)30709-2\/fulltext#:~:text=and%20horticultural%20techniques.-,%CE%949%2DTetrahydrocannabinol,respiratory%20centers.%20%CE%949%2DTetrahydrocannabinol%20exhibits%20both%20analgesic%20and%20anti%2Dinflammatory%20properties.,-Cannabidiol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cannot kill you directly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recreational cannabis laws are associated with a 10% increase in motor vehicle deaths \u2013 underscoring the importance of responsible consumption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, nonmedical or recreational consumers face state-by-state limitations. Fortunately, medical cannabis cards are more widely available.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Medical Use<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Becoming a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/patient-faq\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">designated medical card patient or caregiver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has its practical advantages for legal access and regulation purposes. There are many tangible and significant benefits to medical cards, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower taxes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher possession, potency, and quantity limits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better cannabis growing rights<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legal protections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State reciprocity\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical cannabis treatment for minors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access to medical-only dispensaries<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefits of medical cards can\u2019t be ignored in a country with severely fractured cannabis laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the state you live in, there\u2019s a defined list of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/do-i-qualify\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cqualifying\u201d conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set forth by medical authorities. Once the brain fully matures around age 25, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9377647\/#:~:text=Summary%20of%20Effects,that%20investigate%20mechanisms.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term neurodevelopmental risks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of THC significantly decrease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short-term, however, is a different story <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/how-long-does-cannabis-high-last\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">until it\u2019s metabolized<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. THC and similar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/types-of-thc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impairing cannabinoids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (e.g. delta 8, etc.) cause temporary impairments in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memory<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spatial orientation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attention span<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Executive functioning<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THC side effects are dose-dependent, and may also cause temporary, mild-to-moderate:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast heart rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry, red eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term, 2024 data observing adult medical card patients <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2823671#:~:text=Conclusions%20and%20Relevance,more%20diverse%20cohorts.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 1 year of cannabis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use shows no functioning differences in working memory, reward, or inhibitory control.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Neuropsychiatric Effects<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reassuringly, 2023 data show that states with medical or recreational cannabis are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2800728#:~:text=Conclusions%20and%20Relevance,may%20be%20informative.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not associated with increased rates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of psychosis-related health outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, people with existing severe mental illness or strong genetic psychiatric dispositions to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpsy\/article\/PIIS2215-0366(22)00161-4\/abstract#:~:text=Overall%2C%20use%20of,of%20this%20association.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psychotic (i.e. schizophrenia), substance abuse, or manic disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, should avoid the intensely triggering effects of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/research-suggests-that-high-potency-thc-products-arent-for-everyone\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-potency THC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hemp may still offer them relief through non-intoxicating, antipsychotic, and antianxiety cannabinoids like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/cbd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/what-you-should-know-about-cbg-and-its-health-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problematic cannabis dependence, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/is-weed-addictive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cannabis use disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can happen when certain factors overwhelm you and overrun your work or social life. The likelihood increases as tolerance and dependence build with repeat high-THC exposure. CUD also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39151799\/#:~:text=Results%3A%20Of,are%20also%20needed.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">usually co-occurs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with mental illness and other substance use disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ironically, medical cannabis laws are associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0376871624000346#:~:text=one%20with%20people-,Conclusions,prevalence%20across%20states%20indicates%20unmet%20treatment%20need%20in%20the%20US.,-CRediT%20authorship%20contribution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less CUD treatment-seeking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But if this happens, seek treatment with a knowledgeable, local healthcare professional such as a therapist or your doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/what-is-cannabinoid-hyperemesis-syndrome\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is rare but may occur with heavy or repeated THC use. Refer to Veriheal\u2019s CHS guide for more information, but keep in mind that uncontrolled vomiting is a medical emergency.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cannabis Smoking<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis smoking is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7352011\/#:~:text=We%20found%20the%20most%20common%20forms,risk\/benefit%20profiles.33%2C%2034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most popular means of consumption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it\u2019s also the least healthy. That&#8217;s because smoking cannabis or anything else releases many of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jto.org\/article\/S1556-0864%2818%2930038-8\/fulltext#:~:text=Histologic%20and%20Airway,lung%20cancer.3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">same harmful particulates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as tobacco smoke.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current research shows no conclusive evidence between cannabis smoking and lung cancer, but COPD may occur in the heaviest and longest-term smokers (20 joint-years).
