That\u2019s an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2761271#:~:text=With%20the%20legalization,of%20older%20adults.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exponential increase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 0.4% in 2006\u2013\u201907, and 2.9% from 2015 to \u201816. This is a testament to legalization efforts, but also reflects the stark realities of a growing, aging population suffering from ever-increasing but unmet chronic health issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a world of suboptimal pharmaceuticals, integrative approaches like medical cannabis are in demand. With careful dosing and monitoring, medical cannabis offers a safe, holistic approach to enhancing quality of life for older adults.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This wide range of accessible benefits increases hope, health, wellbeing, and quality of life for many seniors in a safe and natural way. Especially for those dealing with difficult-to-treat conditions and have few or no other options.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Common Uses And Benefits<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 research on cannabis use patterns in older adults suggests that medical cannabis use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10735769\/#:~:text=Use%20of%20marijuana%20for,largely%20for%20medical%20reasons.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases with age<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nearly two-thirds of cannabis consumers over age 80 do so for medical reasons, and adults 80+ also consume the most frequently among older adults. The authors state these findings presumably demonstrate higher medical needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study also reveals that seniors typically endorse reasons like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthritis (61%)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression (36%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma (20%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COPD (18%)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, internal Veriheal data shows more of the most common conditions for medical cannabis in people 65 and older:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic pain (56%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble Sleeping (47%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthritis (33%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other (27%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle spasm (17%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer (9%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea (6%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immune deficiency (3%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures (1%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crohn\u2019s disease (1%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV\/AIDS (&lt;1%)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surprisingly, most seniors applying for medical cannabis recommendations through Veriheal report using cannabis or CBD before (36.7% and 37.7%, respectively), or even currently (25% and 20.5%). Only 16.2% said they\u2019ve never used cannabis before, and 32.2% hadn\u2019t tried CBD. This further supports research findings that suggest increasing age causes more medical needs, and logically greater medical cannabis use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Side Effects, Risks, and Hazards<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Common Side Effects<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All substances have side effects, including cannabis. The side effects are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/can.2021.0156#:~:text=Low%2DQuality%20Evidence-,Values%20and%20preferences,of%20appetite%2C%20unclear%20mentation%2C%20reduced%20affect%2C%20hemorrhoids%2C%20and%20substance%20use%20disorder.,-Practical%20tip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less risky than other medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and most often related to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/can.2021.0156#:~:text=tachycardia%2C%20confusion).115-,Adverse%20effects,use%20follow%20a%20structured%20initiation%20process%20and%20have%20clinical%20supervision%20throughout.,-Dosing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dose and route of THC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the main intoxicating component. These are generally non-serious, temporary, and include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognitive impairment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry mouth and eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast heart rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drowsiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinicproceedings.org\/article\/S0025-6196(18)30709-2\/fulltext#:~:text=and%20horticultural%20techniques.-,%CE%949%2DTetrahydrocannabinol,believed%20to%20moderate%20and%20counteract%20psychosis%2Dinducing%20effects%20of%20THC.12,-Minor%20Phytocannabinoids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cannot fatally overdose on THC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or cannabis directly, as with opioids. Cannabinoids like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/cbd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are anxiety-reducing and more tolerable than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/uncovering-thc-the-cannabis-plants-most-famous-cannabinoid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and may even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1422-0067\/25\/8\/4204#:~:text=3.5.%20Psychiatric%20Conditions,conflicting%20%5B62%5D.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce cravings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for alcohol and opioids. CBD can still have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9782576\/#:~:text=The%20most%20common,beginning%20of%20treatment.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mild to moderate side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, typically in very large doses over a few hundred milligrams, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal distress<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upset stomach\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High liver enzymes (i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f combined with anti-seizure medications such as clobazam or valproate)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Dosing Considerations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beginner doses for seniors should start with or less than 5 mg THC by mouth to avoid side effects. Elderly persons who are frail, on multiple medications, or THC-sensitive should consider microdosing with 2.5\u20135mg THC first, with supervision. Consider increasing the dose by 2.5mg by mouth every 1\u20132 days until you know how THC affects you or desired results are achieved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aging <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8296849\/#:~:text=The%20effects%20of%20cannabis%20use%20on%20cognition%20in,effect%20of%20cannabis%20on%20cognition%20among%20older%20adults.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causes many changes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to how we process cannabis. Our bodies get drier, become more sensitive, and take longer to metabolize medications, especially if you\u2019re on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/can.2021.0156#:~:text=Additional%20Practical%20Considerations-,Drug%20interactions,e.g.%2C%20drowsiness%2C%20ataxia)%2C%20and%20anticholinergics%20(e.g.%2C%20tachycardia%2C%20confusion).115,-Adverse%20effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several prescriptions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and take cannabis at the same time. Serious drug interactions are rare, involving antiseizure medications, so always ask your provider before taking cannabinoids.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Falling Hazard<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some, the dizziness brought on by THC can be complicated by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lightheadedness upon standing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood pressure upon standing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These factors could cause falls or even hip fractures in susceptible older adults. Being conscientious with your provider-recommended dose, housing environment (e.g., rugs, steps), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/water\/art-20044256#:~:text=So%20how%20much,rest%20from%20drinks.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">staying hydrated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and having a caregiver present can minimize this risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cardiopulmonary Risks<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 10% of all older adults <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/284135\/percentage-americans-smoke-marijuana.aspx#:~:text=Adults%20aged%2055%20and%20older%20(10%25)%20are%20less%20likely%20to%20report%20using%20marijuana%20than%20are%20middle%2Daged%20(18%25)%20and%20young%20(19%25)%20adults.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choose to smoke cannabis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Smoking is the preference of about half of all cannabis-consuming older adults, consistent with internal Veriheal data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While popular, smoking cannabis can bring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.resmedjournal.com\/article\/S0954-6111(23)00382-7\/abstract#:~:text=The%20diminished%20perception,and%20decision%2Dmakers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short and long-term side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coughing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucus and phlegm<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic bronchitis<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For my patients, I recommend exploring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/dry-herb-vaporizing-a-healthier-alternative-to-smoking-cannabis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry herb vaporizing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/how-to-enjoy-the-benefits-of-cannabis-without-smoking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-inhalational routes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to avoid negative airway effects. If you have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/cardiovascular-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, smoking cannabis may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3558923\/#S12:~:text=Given%20the%20prior%20evidence%20of%20acutely%20increased%20risk%20following%20each%20episode%20of%20smoking%20marijuana%2C%20it%20seems%20prudent%20to%20caution%20patients%20with%20coronary%20heart%20disease%20and%20those%20at%20high%20risk%20of%20cardiovascular%20disease%20to%20abstain%20from%20smoking%20marijuana.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trigger a heart attack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or other adverse cardiovascular event like a stroke or atrial fibrillation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dependence<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THC is intoxicating, and for some, its use may become problematic. Rates of cannabis use disorder (CUD) among adults 65+ are increasing, tripling from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8177073\/#S16:~:text=The%20number%20of,of%20medicinal%20cannabis.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.1% to 0.3%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between 2001 and 2013. Data indicates this is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6376862\/#:~:text=Meanwhile%2C%20THC%20has,NIDA%5D%2C%202017).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">related to increasing THC potency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vastly overtaking CBD in today\u2019s cannabis, going up from 3.5% THC in 1994 to 12.3% in 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using high-THC cannabis products, having a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39151799\/#:~:text=Results%3A%20Of,are%20also%20needed.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health condition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or misusing other substances increases this risk. If you are struggling with CUD, talk openly with your trusted provider or therapist.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Cannabis Supports Healthy Aging<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Brain Health and Dementia<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We used to think neurons like brain cells are irreplaceable, which isn\u2019t true <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8541184\/#:~:text=The%20concept%20of,point%20of%20view.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to new science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I recently met a scientist investigating yet another way that whole-plant cannabis can mitigate aging.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mitochondria as New Anti-Aging Targets<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel Gana, MSc, is a prolific pharmaceutical microbiologist and copywriter.He recently taught me about how the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/cannabinoids-and-the-endocannabinoid-system-a-match-made-in-heaven\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endocannabinoid system (ECS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also embedded within mitochondria themselves and may regulate the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1043661822005497#:~:text=open%20access-,Abstract,strategies%20for%20such%20pathologies%2C%20which%20is%20also%20discussed%20in%20this%20review.,-Graphical%20Abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effects of aging and disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This research makes sense, given we know mitochondria are ancient structures that were once independent cells, and are inherited only from our mothers. They already carry <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bio.libretexts.org\/Bookshelves\/Introductory_and_General_Biology\/General_Biology_(Boundless)\/04%3A_Cell_Structure\/4.09%3A_Eukaryotic_Cells_-_Mitochondria#:~:text=Mitochondria%20have%20their,free%2Dliving%20prokaryotes.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their own DNA, RNA, ribosomes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 and now endocannabinoid system. If further elucidated, it could change the face of cannabis medicine forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitochondria are important cell structures that promote energy, longevity, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/biosourcebotanicals.com\/anti-aging-effects-of-cannabis-a-comprehensive-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several anti-aging functions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We already know that whole-plant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0361923020301386#:~:text=Endocannabinoid%20system%20activity,and%20impaired%20memory.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cannabis compounds can target mitochondria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mitochondrial and endocannabinoid receptors (i.e., mtCB1R and CB1), and more, to improve our brain health and wellbeing as we age. Particularly if the components are preserved well enough to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/what-does-new-cannabis-research-tell-us-about-the-entourage-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work together more efficiently<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This new, evidence-based theory behind these ancient structures is distinct from our endocannabinoid system, resembling the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/piecing-together-the-endocannabinoidome-charting-the-next-frontier\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endocannabinoidome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concept we recognize today.
