That is until a recent study showed that the tables have finally turned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, women are the dominant target market when it comes to cannabis users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, you\u2019ll discover why women outrank men for the first time for cannabis use, why women are using cannabis, historical stigmas surrounding women&#8217;s use of cannabis, and how some states are beginning to add women-specific conditions for treatment using medical cannabis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Women Surpass Men in Cannabis Use for the First Time<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis use has historically been significantly more prevalent among men than women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in 2023, the gender that consumed more cannabis changed for the first time in recorded history, which began in 1975.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.umich.edu\/cannabis-hallucinogen-use-among-adults-still-at-historic-highs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitoring the Future<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> survey data conducted by the University of Michigan shows that women between the ages of 19 and 30 are now the ones who consume the most cannabis. The cannabis app <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mjbizdaily.com\/women-are-driving-cannabis-wellness-revolution\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CWomen%20are%20leading,28%25%20versus%2019%25).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jointly also indicates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that more than half of its account users (55%) are women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis brands knew this meant a change in their marketing strategies, so they invested heavily in products that are proven to be more popular with women specifically. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shift in gender reversal for cannabis consumption could also be linked to a wider variety of cannabis product forms on the market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Veriheal-Medical-Cannabis-Preference-Report-2021-Data-Analysis.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">internal Veriheal data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some of the cannabis products women have shown to prefer most frequently are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edibles (71%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flower (70%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaporizer (46%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oils (41%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBD (32%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topicals (21%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tinctures (20%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capsules (20%)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering the types of products women prefer, it&#8217;s likely more women began trying cannabis not only due to it being available in more states but that these types of products intrigued them more than what had previously been on the market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As more new and innovative cannabis products continue to come out, along with new states legalizing them every year, the number of women using cannabis may continue to rise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Historical Stigma Surrounding Women\u2019s Use of Cannabis<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, there has been a stigma for quite some time regarding the typical stereotypes of cannabis and those who consume it. One of those stereotypes involves women consuming cannabis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to the change in the stigma surrounding cannabis, women are having more conversations and reporting their use of cannabis without feeling ashamed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Australian author, Melanie Wentzel, wrote a book called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cannabisqueens.world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis Queens<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TM<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which delved deep into the roots of why there\u2019s such a stigma surrounding women&#8217;s consumption of marijuana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In history, there have been numerous events and periods that have shaped this stigma, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the sexualization of women depicted in \u2018Reefer Madness\u2019 propaganda.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the writing of her <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis Queens<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> book, Wentzel also surveyed 75 women about their legal cannabis experiences. What she found was that 57% of those women experienced gender-based discrimination, further showing a lingering stigma surrounding women using cannabis today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This image problem may have stuck around for most of this century, but it seems women are feeling more and more empowered to try and continue using this incredible plant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Illinois: Trendsetters for Adding Women-Specific Conditions to Medical Cannabis Treatment List<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January 2025, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dph.illinois.gov\/resource-center\/news\/2025\/january\/release-20250109.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illinois Department of Public Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IDPH) approved four new women-specific medical conditions to the list of conditions that can be treated with medical cannabis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These four conditions are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endometriosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ovarian cysts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uterine fibroids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female orgasmic disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMedical cannabis has been shown to offer an effective means of relief from a variety of debilitating medical conditions and symptoms,\u201d said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra about the newly added conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hopefully, the IDPH will set a new trend for more states to add similar women-specific conditions so more women can find relief using cannabis for these issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why More Women Are Finally Using Cannabis<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men and women have biological differences, meaning that in some ways, their bodies and minds will have a different set of needs and potential conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are even significantly more likely to be impacted by common issues like anxiety, pain, and sleep deprivation\u2014or all three. Fortunately, these are all common things that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/cannabis-101\/#:~:text=Cannabinoids%20are%20the%20active%20chemical,%2C%20and%20cannabigerol%20(CBG).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cannabinoids can help with<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of the top reasons women are now turning to cannabis, according to research.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Aiding in Relaxation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women generally tend to experience and be impacted by stress and anxiety more often than men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the statistics about women being impacted by stress and anxiety are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32.7% of women versus 24.4% of men <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usafacts.org\/articles\/who-experiences-anxiety-and-depression-in-the-us\/#:~:text=The%20gender%20gap%20in%20rates,men%20reported%20symptoms%20of%20depression.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported anxiety symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within the last two weeks as of October 2023<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are almost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/find-help-for\/women\/anxiety#:~:text=5%20Women%20are%20nearly%20twice,than%20for%20males%20(14.3%25).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twice as likely<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be diagnosed with anxiety disorders in their lifetime, particularly between puberty and age 50.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women may experience greater anxiety <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5613977\/#:~:text=Coping%20and%20Cognitive%20Styles,neuroactive%20steroid%20fluctuations%20(20)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sensitivity than men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even starting from an early age.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2575018\/#:~:text=Results,following%20stress%20and%20alcohol%20cues.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report and display<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> greater sadness and anxiety following stress than men.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means women are also more likely to be<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/best-weed-strains-for-anxiety\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">looking for a way to relax<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and relieve their stress and anxiety. Women tend to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders and are hard on themselves\u2014typically more so than men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis allows women to stop, slow down, and take a breath. This regulation and balancing of a woman\u2019s mental state means feeling less frantic and being more likely to feel joy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a nationally representative <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.yougov.com\/content\/50909-cannabis-trends-understanding-female-consumers-motivations-and-preferences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey by YouGov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0 about 12% of women said aiding in relaxation would make them more likely to\u00a0 try cannabis products or use them more frequently.,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, by the time women apply for medical cannabis cards with Veriheal, sign-up data shows that about 72% of female respondents want to feel \u201crelaxed\u201d, and 47% indicate they want to feel \u201cmellow\/chill\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/sarahsinclair\/2024\/12\/18\/data-shows-young-women-use-more-cannabis-than-men--heres-why\/#:~:text=This%20was%20echoed,Brain%20Imaging%20Center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poll conducted by 150 members<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a female networking group called EmpowHER Cannabis Society showed an overwhelming response from women, stating that the top reason they consume cannabis was to cope with everyday stressors or to unwind.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.empowhercannasociety.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EmpowHER<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was originally founded to provide women in the cannabis industry with an empowered but safe space while resisting outdated social and cultural norms surrounding cannabis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Improved Sleep<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/how-sleep-works\/how-is-sleep-different-for-men-and-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep Foundation reports that studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that although women spend more time in deep sleep than men, they also experience more fragmented or worse sleep quality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research cited by the Sleep Foundation concludes this is likely because women typically:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have more caregiving responsibilities, such as childcare<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are more prone to poor sleep due to chronic pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are <\/span><a women than men, it\u2019s no surprise that a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.yougov.com\/content\/50909-cannabis-trends-understanding-female-consumers-motivations-and-preferences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YouGov analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows improved sleep is the number one reason women would try <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/cannabinoids-may-promote-a-good-nights-sleep-study-finds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using cannabis as a solution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was also the second most common reason for consuming cannabis, according to the EmpowHER Cannabis Society poll.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Physical Pain Relief<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/best-strains-for-pain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain relief<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the most common reason for both women and men to use cannabis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew Research Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 70% of women are mothers who also work outside the home. Juggling work and childcare responsibilities means women typically experience high levels of physical pain from all this multitasking. In addition, women have numerous gender-specific health conditions that have painful side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women seem to be discovering more and more just how effective<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/chronic-pain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cannabis can be as a natural alternative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to other drug-based pain relievers.
