Some thought it came from a police code for marijuana possession, while others pointed to Bob Dylan\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.songfacts.com\/facts\/bob-dylan\/rainy-day-women-12-and-35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rainy Day Women No. 12 &amp; 35<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014since 12 times 35 happens to be 420.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the most widely accepted story traces back to a group of 1970s bell-bottom-wearing teenage friends from San Rafael High School in California named <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dave Reddix, Steve Capper, Jeffrey Noel, Mark Gravich, and Larry Schwartz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It all started in the fall of 1971 with this group of friends, who became known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/420-founders-waldos-san-rafael-high-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;the Waldos&#8221;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because they hung out by a certain wall on campus. Then, one day, the Waldos caught wind of a rumor from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a friend&#8217;s brother<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a Coast Guard member had planted cannabis crops near the Point Reyes Peninsula but could no longer tend to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afraid his boss would find out and unwilling to take any more risks, the Coast Guard member created a treasure map to lead the boys to the cannabis plants. The deal was straightforward\u2014if they could find it, the marijuana would be theirs. The Waldos <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/part-party-part-call-to-action-a-look-at-pot-holiday-4-20#:~:text=But%20a%20consensus%20has%20emerged,map%20and%20gave%20the%20teens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made it their mission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find the hidden weed growing in the forest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the Waldos soon realized the risks of making marijuana references while at school. They made a ritual out of it, meeting every day at 4:20 p.m. by the statue of chemist Louis Pasteur for their cannabis-crop-searching quest. In their &#8217;66 Chevy Impala, they&#8217;d light up as soon as they hit the road, keep smoking to Point Reyes, and continue smoking the entire time they were there\u2014week after week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This led to \u201c420\u201d becoming their secret code for cannabis\u2014first as \u201c420 Louie,\u201d then simply \u201c420.\u201d While they never actually found the cannabis crops, \u201c420\u201d remained their secret code for cannabis. By the time the boys graduated and went their separate ways, the term \u201c420\u201d had already spread to other friends and acquaintances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dave Reddix, one of the Waldos, introduced the word to the band after landing work as a roadie for Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Thanks to their connections with the Grateful Dead, the term \u201c420\u201d spread beyond their circle of friends and the band.
