The same could be true for equine athletes, as supplements and cannabis products for horses are relatively new.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reality is that horses are herbivores that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/can.2018.0039#:~:text=(2)%20Cannabinoids%20deter,pigeons%20and%20doves).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naturally evolved to eat <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Central Asian steppe thousands of years ago \u2013 and humans also recognized its equine veterinary potential for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/can.2017.0028#:~:text=the%20root.%E2%80%9D3-,Infection,root%20has%20been%20administered%20topically%2C9%20orally%2C3%20and%20intrarectally.8,-Active%20Compounds%20in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hundreds of years, too<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, as medical and recreational marijuana and hemp have recently become more widely legal, conversations about its benefits have grown. This newly increased awareness has prompted more equestrians to discuss and explore cannabis as a potential source of relief for themselves and their equine partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, \u200bthe equestrian community&#8217;s perception of cannabis has evolved notably in recent years. This was also likely influenced by changing regulations regarding cannabis within equestrian organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Cannabis Use For Human Equestrian Athletes<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like athletes in other sports, human equestrians benefit from cannabis\u2019 therapeutic effects for common ailments such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pain and Inflammation Relief: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riders often <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/380276163_The_Overload_knee_joint_pain_in_horse_riding_athletes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience joint pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/arthritis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from repetitive movements and physical strain in and out of the saddle. Although many still view it as a controversial treatment, it&#8217;s becoming an increasingly popular addition to the health routines of equine athletes. While CBD research in equine patients is still in its infancy, so far it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11071133\/#:~:text=In%C2%A0the%20matter%20of%C2%A0safety%2C%20CBD%20has%20been%20referred%20to%C2%A0as%20generally%20well%2Dtolerated%20substance%20in%C2%A0horses%20(Collins%20et%C2%A0al.%202019%3B%20Davis%202019%3B%20Draeger%20et%C2%A0al.%202020).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appears to be safe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, effective, and well-tolerated in several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11442603\/#:~:text=limits)%20was%20found.-,Horses,Interlandi%20et%20al.%202024,-Open%20in%20a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">case studies up to 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBD pellets and horse treats are a standard consumption method for horses that offer an easy and convenient way to incorporate CBD into the equine diet. These pellets are often designed to be palatable for even picky eaters and are simple to administer, making them a popular choice. CBD oil is also becoming a popular consumption method for horses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the most common benefits of equine CBD are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Calming Effects:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For horses that experience stress or anxiety, CBD is beneficial as it promotes relaxation without causing sedation. As such, CBD is an ideal choice for competition horses or those prone to separation anxiety, according to these limited case studies.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Joint Support: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintaining healthy joints is essential for horse athletes. CBD supplements combined with traditional joint support products like glucosamine and chondroitin can improve mobility and reduce inflammation. CBD is particularly effective in managing joint pain alongside magnesium and vitamin E supplements, according to recent equine case studies.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Wellness and Recovery:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Adding CBD to a horse\u2019s diet can promote overall health for equine athletes. Its anti-inflammatory properties help with recovery and reduce soreness after intense exercise. As a &#8216;cool feed,&#8217; they don\u2019t add extra heat to the horse&#8217;s system, making them beneficial for horses competing or exercising often.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Cannabis Use for Equestrian Competition: Rules &amp; Regulations\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like in other sports, cannabis is a commonly banned substance in equestrian sports. Many organizations recently developed policies around its use due to its potential to enhance performance (i.e., less anxiety).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each rated or international competition has its policies on banned substances, including cannabis.
