This designation means the federal government considers cannabis a drug with no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In reality, cannabis has several medical and therapeutic uses, including alleviating chronic pain, chemotherapy-induced nausea, sleep disorders, and multiple sclerosis (MS). These benefits were identified by a 2017 systematic review of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/resource\/24625\/Cannabis_chapter_highlights.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids<\/span><\/i> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Regarding \u201cpotential for abuse,\u201d it would be dishonest to say cannabis has none. A 2024 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK538131\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cannabis Use Disorder<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> clinical review defines abuse as using large amounts of cannabis often, for longer than planned, and continuing despite harm to your body or mind. This may occur due to cannabis addiction, but not everyone is at risk. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cannabis\/health-effects\/cannabis-use-disorder.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Centers for Disease Control (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the risk is higher if you use high-THC cannabis often or start during your teen years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let\u2019s now look at substances and habits that are less regulated than cannabis, despite being more addictive and offering little to no medical value:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Nicotine<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-38613\" src=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Nicotine-200x300.png\" alt=\"A hand\" width=\"749\" height=\"1124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Nicotine-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Nicotine.png 342w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 749px) 100vw, 749px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re under 50, you\u2019ve probably heard that cigarettes are dangerous since childhood. But despite health warnings, graphic pictures on cigarette boxes, and overwhelming anecdotal and scientific evidence, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/outlook\/cmo\/tobacco-products\/worldwide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tobacco remains a $900 billion industry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Why? Because tobacco\u2019s nicotine content feels good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tobacco smokers report feeling relaxed, less anxious, and more focused shortly after smoking. This is because nicotine triggers the release of dopamine in the brain, causing temporary feelings of happiness and satisfaction. These effects contribute to tobacco and nicotine\u2019s addictiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/tobacco-products\/health-effects-tobacco-use\/nicotine-why-tobacco-products-are-addictive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">U.S. Food &amp; Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, \u201cTobacco products are addictive because they contain nicotine. Nicotine keeps people using tobacco products, even when they want to stop.\u201d Also, \u201cUsing any tobacco product can lead to nicotine addiction. In fact, according to a 2023 survey, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohols-effects-health\/alcohol-topics-z\/alcohol-facts-and-statistics\/alcohol-use-united-states-age-groups-and-demographic-characteristics#:~:text=According%20to%20the%202023%20National%20Survey%20on%20Drug%20Use%20and%20Health%20(NSDUH)%2C%20224.3%20million%20people%20ages%2012%20and%20older%20(79.1%25%20in%20this%20age%20group)%20reported%20that%20they%20drank%20alcohol%20at%20some%20point%20in%20their%20lifetime.1%2C2%20This%20includes%3A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">79.1% of Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> aged 12 and older have consumed alcohol. Its widespread use makes alcohol one of the most socially accepted vices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, that doesn\u2019t change the fact that alcohol consumption is a dangerous and highly addictive habit. So dangerous that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohols-effects-health\/alcohol-topics-z\/alcohol-facts-and-statistics\/alcohol-related-emergencies-and-deaths-united-states#:~:text=The%20Alcohol%2DRelated,illegal%20drugs.4%2C5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">over 178,000 die from alcohol abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> each year in the U.S. alone. Despite causing nearly as many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/eurpub\/article\/29\/2\/200\/5407688\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">deaths as cigarettes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, alcohol remains completely legal, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/survey-americans-feel-cannabis-is-safer-than-alcohol-and-cigarettes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cannabis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which has no direct fatalities and far fewer associated fatalities, is still federally restricted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2023, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohols-effects-health\/alcohol-topics\/alcohol-facts-and-statistics\/alcohol-use-disorder-aud-united-states-age-groups-and-demographic-characteristics#:~:text=According%20to%20the%202023%20National%20Survey%20on%20Drug%20Use%20and%20Health%20(NSDUH)%2C%2028.9%20million%20people%20ages%2012%20and%20older%20(10.2%25%20in%20this%20age%20group)%20had%20AUD%20in%20the%20past%20year.1%2C2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">28.9 million U.S. residents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> over 12 had alcohol use disorder, which typically develops when uncontrolled drinking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/cycle-alcohol-addiction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rewires the brain\u2019s reward system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It does this by boosting dopamine production and reinforcing the desire to drink, making it harder to quit. Fortunately, alcohol addiction recovery is possible, but it can be a very difficult journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Signs of Alcohol Addiction<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Repeatedly drinking more than intended<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inability to reduce or quit drinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Strong cravings or urges to drink<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Feeling guilty about drinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Irritability, difficulty concentrating, mood swings\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anger around being asked about drinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Having \u201ceye-openers\u201d, morning or daytime drinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Neglecting responsibilities at work, school, or home to drink<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Continuing to drink despite health, relationship, or legal issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Needing more alcohol to feel the same effects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not drinking, like shaking, anxiety, or nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dangerous or severe withdrawal symptoms include seizures, delirium tremens, or altered mental status \u2013 these are considered a medical emergency and may be life-threatening<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Caffeine<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Caffeine is the active compound in coffee that perks you up. The stimulant can help you feel more alert, energized, and focused. However, excessive caffeine consumption can cause physical dependence. How? Consuming caffeine regularly can cause your body to become more reliant on its stimulating effects to perform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As this happens, your caffeine tolerance will increase, leading to needing more and more to get the same boost. If you don\u2019t get your caffeine hit, you may feel tired, irritable, or headachy, which are classic signs of physical dependence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Studies report caffeine is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3777290\/#:~:text=Caffeine%20is%20the%20most%20commonly,this%20clinically%20important%20health%20problem.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">most commonly used drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the world, and that there are instances of humans experiencing caffeine withdrawals. Patients who report problematic caffeine use often have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3777290\/#s012:~:text=caffeinated%20beverages.4-,Withdrawal,doses%20of%20caffeine%20have%20been%20shown%20to%20suppress%20these%20symptoms.57,-Tolerance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">withdrawal symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> like headaches, fatigue, mood swings, difficulty concentrating, and flu-like symptoms. If other criteria are present, they may be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3777290\/#s012:~:text=Table%201.,or%20more%20symptoms.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">diagnosed with caffeine use disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Those who can\u2019t stop even though it hurts or makes them feel sick may have unfortunately slipped into food addiction or a binge-eating disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyagingpoll.org\/reports-more\/report\/addiction-highly-processed-food-among-older-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2022 University of Michigan national survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> discovered that 1 in 8 U.S. adults over 50 had signs of food addiction. Almost 1 in 4 of the participants also admitted to having an overwhelming and obsessive urge to eat highly processed foods at least once a week. They do that by amplifying the feel-good properties that attract humans to each other in the first place.\u201d This leads to excessive social media use and potential addiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Signs of Social Media Addiction<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Constant urge to check notifications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Spending more time than intended scrolling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Neglecting responsibilities or relationships for screen time<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Feeling anxious or irritable when unable to access social media<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Using social media to cope with stress, boredom, or loneliness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trying and failing to cut back on usage<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Shopping<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you can\u2019t stop shopping on Amazon or Temu, even though you\u2019re racking up debt buying stuff you don\u2019t need, you might have an addiction. Otherwise known as compulsive buying disorder (CBD), the condition typically involves excessive shopping even though it causes distress or other issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to a study, about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC1805733\/#:~:text=Found%20worldwide%2C%20the%20disorder%20has%20a%20lifetime%20prevalence%20of%205.8%25%20in%20the%20US%20general%20population.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5.8% of the U.S. population has CBD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The study also identified possible causes of CBD, which include mood and anxiety disorders, substance use, family history of mental illness, and cultural pressures. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4532632\/#S14:~:text=5%20Conclusions,who%20manifest%20CB.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Later studies also identify<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ADHD, depressive mood, female gender, earlier adult impulse buying, and illicit drug use as associated factors, too. What\u2019s truly frightening is that, unlike most addictive vices, which only adults can access, games are available for all ages.
