In the U.K., recreational cannabis is illegal, and getting a prescription for medical use is no cake walk. Australia is not much better, with only the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) permitting recreational use, and the rest of the country requiring a prescription.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All that, however, is nothing compared to these countries, where breaking cannabis laws could literally cost you your life:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>1.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>SINGAPORE<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2023, Singapore executed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-65395390#:~:text=Singapore%20has%20executed%20a%20man%20for%20conspiring%20to%20traffic%20cannabis%20despite%20pleas%20for%20clemency%20from%20his%20family%2C%20activists%20and%20the%20United%20Nations.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tangaraju Suppiah<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for conspiring to traffic over one kilogram (two pounds) of cannabis. The international community pleaded for clemency, but the government proceeded with the execution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnb.gov.sg\/drug-information\/drugs-and-inhalants#:~:text=Illegal%20traffic%2C%20import,the%20death%20penalty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Singaporean law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, anyone caught with more than 500 grams of cannabis may face the death penalty. Possession of smaller quantities may attract jail time, flogging, and\/or a fine, depending on the quantity and reason for having it. These laws apply to citizens, residents, and tourists alike, making Singapore\u2019s anti-cannabis laws one of the strictest in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>2.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>MALAYSIA<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Malaysian government takes a hard stance against recreational cannabis use, with strict laws and severe penalties for offenders. Under the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cannabis_in_Malaysia#:~:text=Under%20the%20Dangerous,%5B6%5D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dangerous Drugs Act 1952<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, possession of less than 50 grams can result in imprisonment, caning, and\/or a fine, depending on the circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Authorities consider possession of more than 200 grams as drug trafficking, which can result in life imprisonment or even the death penalty, but not before a whipping. A trafficker or grower caught with more than two pounds of cannabis could be lucky; they may face life imprisonment or a steep fine instead. Those caught possessing, growing, or supplying smaller quantities may face four to 12 years in prison and hefty fines, depending on the quantity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Again, these laws apply to citizens and visitors alike, so think twice before bringing cannabis on your next Bali vacation. In May 2025, Indonesian authorities caught American citizen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/asia\/american-basketball-player-arrested-indonesia-alleged-drug-smuggling-rcna207187#:~:text=Jarred%20Dwayne%20Shaw%2C%2034%2C%20from%20Dallas%2C%20Texas%2C%20was%20arrested%20May%207%2C%20after%20police%20raided%20his%20apartment%20in%20Tangerang%20regency%2C%20just%20outside%20the%20capital%2C%20Jakarta%2C%20and%20seized%20132%20pieces%20of%20cannabis%20candies%2C%20said%20Ronald%20Sipayung%2C%20the%20Soekarno%2DHatta%20Airport%20police%20chief.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jarred Dwayne Shaw<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with edibles. Now, his life hangs in the balance, as he faces the possibility of life in prison or the death penalty if convicted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>4.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>SAUDI ARABIA<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unlike other countries that\u2019ve gradually become less strict on cannabis, Saudi Arabia has only gotten stricter. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecdhr.org\/saudi-arabias-execution-escalation-2025-set-to-become-deadliest-year-yet\/#:~:text=In%202025%20alone%2C%20at%20least%2068%20people%20have%20been%20executed%20for%20non%2Dlethal%20drug%20offenses.%20Of%20these%2C%20nearly%2065%20percent%20were%20sentenced%20for%20drug%20cases%2C%2046%20percent%20of%20which%20involved%20cannabis%2C%20raising%20serious%20questions%20about%20proportionality%20and%20compliance%20with%20international%20law.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Between 2024 and 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the country executed at least 68 people for non-lethal drug offenses, and 46% of those cases involved cannabis. Foreigners might get off with deportation if they&#8217;re lucky, but that\u2019s not guaranteed. Repeat offenders, on the other hand, are far more likely to face the harshest penalties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>5.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (UAE)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The UAE might be getting plenty of buzz for its booming, ultra-modern tourism scene, but its cannabis laws are still ancient and unforgiving. This is likely due to the country\u2019s deep Islamic roots that view most intoxicating substances as haram (sinful).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Possessing even trace amounts of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/askthelaw.ae\/legal-articles\/drugs-laws\/illegal-use-of-cannabis-in-the-uae\/#:~:text=The%20possession%20of%20cannabis,legislation%20in%20the%20UAE.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cannabis in the UAE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> can lead to spending at least two years in jail if you\u2019re a first-time offender. A repeat offender may face up to ten years in jail and a hefty fine. And if you\u2019re caught with enough cannabis to suggest trafficking, the death penalty is very much on the table. Trafficking or distributing more than 50 grams can lead to at least five years in prison. All forms of cannabis use are illegal, including recreational, medical, cultivation, and sale, with penalties ranging from flogging to execution. In fact, Iran has one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/deathpenaltyinfo.org\/iran-saudi-arabia-lead-the-world-in-use-of-death-penalty-for-drug-offenses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">highest execution rates for cannabis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and other drug-related offenses, topping even Saudi Arabia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That said, the Iranian government typically reserves the death penalty for repeat offenders caught with over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iranbestlawyer.com\/drug-related-crimes-and-drug-trafficking-under-iranian-law\/#:~:text=If%20an%20individual%20is%20found%20in%20possession%20of%20more%20than%2030%20grams%20of%20the%20substance%2C%20they%20may%20face%20execution%20as%20well%20as%20the%20confiscation%20of%20their%20property%20due%20to%20the%20severity%20of%20the%20offense.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">30 grams of cannabis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Despite these harsh punishments, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/06\/26\/world\/middleeast\/marijuana-use-rises-in-iran-with-little-interference.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">marijuana use in Iran<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> seems to be thriving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>8.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>PHILIPPINES<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prior to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.respicio.ph\/commentaries\/penalty-for-marijuana-possession-philippines#:~:text=Abolished%20the%20death%20penalty%3B%20maximum%20sanction%20under%20%C2%A7%2011%20is%20now%20reclusion%20perpetua%20(life%20imprisonment)%20without%20eligibility%20for%20parole%20and%20a%20fine.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2006<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the death penalty was on the table for cannabis-related offenses in the Philippines. However, life imprisonment sentences can still occur for possessing or distributing large quantities of cannabis. Smaller amounts can lead to serving two to seven years in jail plus fines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>10.<\/b> <b>EGYPT<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Egypt is generally lax when it comes to enforcing its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cannabis_in_Egypt#:~:text=Cannabis%20use%20is,%5B3%5D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">anti-cannabis laws<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It\u2019s why people puffing on blunts and hookahs at caf\u00e9s are a common sight. However, don\u2019t expect Egyptian authorities to extend this courtesy to you if you\u2019re a tourist. Punishments for possession or trafficking are particularly severe for high quantities. You can\u2019t grow, sell, possess, or use it without risking arrest.
