Support for cannabis access and legalization can be found on all sides of the political spectrum, including continued rising support from republican voters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/07\/08\/facts-about-marijuana\/#:~:text=43%25%20of%20Republicans%20and%20GOP%2Dleaning%20independents%20favor%20legalization%20for%20both%20uses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">43% of republicans and GOP-leaning independents favor legalization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for both medical and recreational uses. The numbers also show that moderate and liberal republicans have the same levels of support for legalization as conservative and moderate democrats, with 56-57% of voters supporting legalization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, republican support for legalization hit the majority level for the first time, according to a Gallup poll that found<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/514007\/grassroots-support-legalizing-marijuana-hits-record.aspx#:~:text=.%20Self%2Didentified%20conservatives%20were%20the%20last%20major%20subgroup%20to%20express%20majority%20support%2C%20reaching%2051%25%20in%202022.%20Republicans%20first%20gave%20marijuana%20majority%2Dlevel%20backing%20in%202017.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 51% support among self-identified conservatives. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared to polls from 2003 and 2005 that found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/196550\/support-legal-marijuana.aspx#:~:text=60-,Republicans,42,-Independents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">republican support to be at just 20%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s clear that GOP support for cannabis has been on the rise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-39631\" src=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/republican-support-for-cannabis-2-300x200.png\" alt=\"A republican tag\" width=\"875\" height=\"583\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/republican-support-for-cannabis-2-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/republican-support-for-cannabis-2-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/republican-support-for-cannabis-2-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/republican-support-for-cannabis-2.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 875px) 100vw, 875px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Recent Examples of Republican Support<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, Texas republicans brought forth <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/BillLookup\/History.aspx?LegSess=89R&amp;Bill=SB3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senate Bill 3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an attempt to eliminate most of the hemp market, end thousands of jobs, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/mom-cannabis-advocate-epilepsy-zach-story\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eliminate access to medicine for many patients.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite Texas voters <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/2024-election\/results\/house\/#:~:text=PRESIDENT,GOVERNORS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overwhelmingly opting for republican candidates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in presidential, Senate, and House races, Senate Bill 3 was unpopular among Texas republican voters. Ragnar Research Partners found that only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2025\/06\/18\/3101937\/0\/en\/Texas-Hemp-Advocates-Nearing-150-000-Signatures-Urging-Governor-Abbott-to-Veto-SB-3.html#:~:text=The%20surge%20in,alternative%20to%20opioids.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">37% of voters supported a hemp ban, 53% thought a ban would empower drug cartels, and 55% thought it would increase black market sales.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Further, a whopping 72% of republican voters believed veterans should have access to THC as an opioid alternative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the bill had made it all the way to the Governor\u2019s desk with Senate and House support, Texas Governor Greg Abbott vetoed the bill, citing a need to focus on regulating the hemp industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As another example, Florida came close to legalizing recreational cannabis last year with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Florida_Amendment_3,_Marijuana_Legalization_Initiative_(2024)#:~:text=5%2C950%2C589-,55.90%25,-No\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">55.9% of voters approving Amendment 3.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Although only 44.1% of Floridians voted no on the amendment, the measure still failed because it required a 60% supermajority approval to pass. Notably, the majority <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dos.fl.gov\/elections\/data-statistics\/voter-registration-statistics\/voter-registration-reports\/voter-registration-by-county-and-party\/#:~:text=BAY,135%2C948\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">republican voting counties like Bay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/2024\/results\/florida\/issue-4#:~:text=99%25%20in-,55.9%25,-54%2C359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voted in favor of legalization.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Even at the time, presidential nominee Donald Trump had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/09\/09\/donald-trump-marijuana-legalization-ron-desantis-00177958#:~:text=%E2%80%9CAs%20a%20Floridian%2C%20I%20will%20be%20voting%20YES%20on%20Amendment%203%20this%20November%2C%E2%80%9D%20Trump%20wrote%20in%20the%20Sunday%20Truth%20post.%20%E2%80%9CAs%20President%2C%20we%20will%20continue%20to%20focus%20on%20research%20to%20unlock%20medical%20uses%20of%20marijuana%20to%20a%20schedule%203%20drug%2C%20and%20work%20with%20Congress%20to%20pass%20common%20sense%20laws.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">publicly supported the push to legalize Florida recreational cannabis.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the measure was unsuccessful, voting data and support from republican politicians signal shifting GOP perceptions about cannabis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Results from 2023 polling by the Coalition for Cannabis Policy, Education, and Regulation (CPEAR) also point to this trend. The group found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpear.org\/press-releases\/2023\/02\/22\/new-poll-68-percent-of-conservative-voters-support-federal-cannabis-reform\/#:~:text=68%20percent%20of%20likely,support%20federal%20cannabis%20reform.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">68% of likely 2024 republican presidential voters nationally supported federal reform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while only 29% opposed it. Support among republicans for federal reform had increased by 10% between 2022 and 2023 polling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Healthcare Contradictions\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite continuously growing support for cannabis reform among republican voters, other policy decisions highlight several disparities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Drew Altman of \u201cBeyond the Data\u201d spoke with republican voters in February. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/from-drew-altman\/trump-voters-on-medicaid-on-medicaid-cuts\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CI%20think%20Trump%20knows%20that%20people%20are%20struggling%20right%20now%2C%20and%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20think%20he%E2%80%99s%20gonna%20do%2C%20at%20least%20not%20right%20now%2C%20cut%20anything%20Medicaid%20because%20he%20just%20knows%20people%E2%80%99s%20financial%20problems%20right%20now.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arizona republican voter said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cI think Trump knows that people are struggling right now, and I don\u2019t think he\u2019s gonna do, at least right now, cut anything Medicaid because he knows people\u2019s financial problems right now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the recently passed \u201cBig Beautiful Bill\u201d is set to cut health spending by about $1 trillion over a decade. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/shots-health-news\/2025\/07\/02\/nx-s1-5453870\/senate-republicans-tax-bill-medicaid-health-care#:~:text=cuts%20federal%20health%20spending%20by%20about%20%241%20trillion%20over%20a%20decade%20in%20ways%20that%20will%20jeopardize%20the%20physical%20and%20financial%20health%20of%20tens%20of%20millions%20of%20Americans.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NPR reports <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that this decision will \u201cjeopardize the physical and financial health of tens of millions of Americans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2024\/03\/26\/most-americans-favor-legalizing-marijuana-for-medical-recreational-use\/#:~:text=Still%2C%20wide%20majorities%20of%20Republicans%20in%20all%20age%20groups%20favor%20legalizing%20marijuana%20at%20least%20for%20medical%20use.%20Among%20those%20ages%2065%20and%20older%2C%20just%2020%25%20say%20marijuana%20should%20not%20be%20legal%20even%20for%20medical%20purposes.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wide majority of republicans in all age groups favor cannabis legalization<\/span><\/a> <b>at least for medical use<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s clear that policy doesn\u2019t always reflect the wishes of the people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-39630\" to Policy\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there\u2019s no question that GOP support for cannabis reform is strong, there\u2019s little to indicate that support will lead to policy change.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump recently appointed Terrance Cole, a former Secretary of Virginia\u2019s Department of Public Safety and Homeland Security, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wavy.com\/news\/politics\/former-va-secretary-of-homeland-security-named-dea-under-trump-administration\/#:~:text=Terrance%20Cole%20was%20recently%20named%20as%20the%20new%20Drug%20Enforcement%20Administration%20(DEA)%20Administrator%2C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to serve as the new administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/trumps-pick-to-lead-dea-says-marijuana-rescheduling-review-will-be-one-of-my-first-priorities-in-the-job\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CIf%20confirmed%2C%20i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cole said <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that rescheduling cannabis from Schedule 1 to Schedule 3 in the Controlled Substances Act would be \u201cone of [his] first priorities,\u201d Marijuana Moment reports that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/trumps-pick-to-lead-dea-says-marijuana-rescheduling-review-will-be-one-of-my-first-priorities-in-the-job\/#:~:text=As%20far%20as,to%20psychosis.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proceedings are still on hold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with no future actions on the schedule.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though Cole has not been forthcoming about his plans to reschedule, we can look to his past posts to see where he stands on the issue. Over a year ago, he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7173468001566998528\/?trk=public_post_embed_social-actions-reactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">posted a selfie <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from a visit to the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority with a caption stating, \u201cEverybody knows my stance on marijuana after 30 plus years in law enforcement, so don\u2019t even ask!\u201d followed by hashtags like \u201c#justsayno\u201d and \u201cnotlegal4distribution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, he also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VA_PSHS\/status\/1760377315677090234?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1760377315677090234%7Ctwgr%5Ee0623dc7b5a451ec5fe82cf770cbd18784c1546e%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweeted a link<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to an article to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201clearn the dangers of peer pressure and marijuana use.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>READ: <a class=\"sc-ciFRQG jVdmlA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/as-more-conservatives-embrace-cannabis-is-red-the-new-green\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">As More Conservatives Embrace Cannabis, Is Red the New Green?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Future Under GOP Leadership<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly a decade ago, Trump said, \u201cIn terms of marijuana and legalization, I think that should be a state issue, state-by-state. \u2026 Marijuana is such a big thing. I think medical should happen \u2014 right? Don\u2019t we agree? I think so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as part of his 2021 fiscal year budget plan, he had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/trump-budget-proposes-ending-state-medical-marijuana-protections-and-blocking-dc-from-legalizing\/#:~:text=proposed%20ending%20an%20existing%20policy%20that%20protects%20state%20medical%20marijuana%20programs%20from%20Justice%20Department%20interference%20as%20part%20of%20his%20fiscal%20year%202021%20budget%20plan%20released%20on%20Monday.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposed the end of an existing policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that protected state medical programs from interference by the Justice Department.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These examples are just two of many highlighting the contradictions around future cannabis policy. As politicians write bills, debate, and vote on cannabis legislation and healthcare reforms, we often fail to see public opinion reflected.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know republican voters tend to support cannabis on some level, even if just for medical uses.
