Now, even more harmfully unregulated substances are readily available at a neighborhood gas station, vape store, or corner market store near you! Names like \u2018Gas Station Heroin\u2019 and \u2018Tia\u2019 nab the headlines, but what actually are these drugs, and how bad can they mess your life up?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Why Do People Seek Out Gas Station Drugs?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The catchall term, \u2018gas station drugs, \u2019 means any unregulated, over-the-counter product, usually claiming to be a health supplement or mood booster. Manufacturers typically produce these drugs as pills or powders, and some even package them as beverages stocked in the cooler alongside sketchier energy drinks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a natural intrigue involved when products have a reputation for potentially helping with pain or providing a possible boost. The demographic includes everyone from underage kids chasing a buzz to people legitimately seeking relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unfortunate reality of the world we live in is one with very high substance abuse rates. A lot of people use different types of gas station drugs in the hopes of getting off of supposedly harder drugs like methamphetamine and opioids like fentanyl, heroin, or oxycodone. The hope is that users will \u2018taper off\u2019 and eventually stop using. The peak of their popularity was when a Florida man on bath salts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2012\/05\/30\/153989768\/bath-salts-drug-suspected-in-miami-face-eating-attack#:~:text=More%20is%20becoming%20known%20about%20one%20of%20the%20most%20horrific%20crimes%20we%27ve%20heard%20about%20recently%20%E2%80%94%20the%20attack%20in%20Miami%20on%20Saturday%20during%20which%20a%20man%20was%20%22biting%20off%20parts%20of%20another%20man%27s%20face.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ate another Florida man\u2019s face off<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014ah, 2012, how much we miss ye!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reports indicated these drugs contained an unregulated and random <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/ondcp\/ondcp-fact-sheets\/synthetic-drugs-k2-spice-bath-salts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">array of synthetic compounds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, causing any number of acute and long-term physical and mental health symptoms. The bad rap and news stories ultimately shifted these drugs from behind the counter of many stores and into \u2018inquire within\u2019 status. The new gas station bad boy eventually became <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/delta-8-vs-delta-9-whats-the-difference\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delta-8 weed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and its chemically processed, \u2018something\u2019s kinda off\u2019 type of high. However, there are other, even more dangerous substances currently available at many stores, and as it turns out, they\u2019re worse news than the National Enquirer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>What Is This Tieneptine Stuff I Keep Reading About?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Politicians and news reports often speak of a product called \u2018gas station heroin\u2019 wreaking havoc on public health. This drug is formally known as tianeptine\u2014nicknamed Tia\u2014and it&#8217;s been used to treat depression in other countries for quite some time. In the U.S., lawmakers are making efforts to have Tia put on the list of federally illegal Schedule I drugs, while individual states are making their own rules concerning the drug. It\u2019s currently sold as a substance capable of boosting brain functionality, known as a nootropic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consumers asking the clerk to grab a short, shot-sized bottle of tia from behind the counter is the first gamble\u2014many producers commonly include mysterious ingredients in varying amounts. The word \u2018heroin\u2019 gets thrown around with tia because it isn\u2019t anything like a typical antidepressant\u2014it&#8217;s actually a full-blown opioid similar to morphine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers initially discovered a potential for tia to promote neuroplasticity in the brain; however, further research confirmed that it activates the same pleasure-reward-addiction receptor as many opioids, including morphine, oxycodone, and fentanyl. The FDA has outlined some potential withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting tia\u2014many symptoms are on par with ridiculous disclaimers of pharmaceutical product TV ads. Side effects may include: craving, sweating, \u2018goose flesh\u2019, diarrhea, and myalgias. Those symptoms confirm that withdrawal is a side effect, so should we cue the singing, dancing, and elderly couples in outdoor bathtubs?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neptune\u2019s Fix is one brand known to include a varying mix and ratio of tia, but also other compounds that may consist of cannabinoids. One bad batch of Neptune\u2019s Fix spread through parts of New Jersey in 2023, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/mm7304a5.htm#:~:text=Among%20the%2020%20encounters%2C%2013%20of%20the%2017%20patients%20were%20admitted%20to%20an%20intensive%20care%20unit%2C%20and%20seven%20of%20the%2017%20underwent%20endotracheal%20intubation.%20There%20were%20no%20deaths.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sending 13 of 17 patients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with adverse effects into intensive care. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/mm7304a5.htm#:~:text=Among%20the%2020%20encounters%2C%2013%20of%20the%2017%20patients%20were%20admitted%20to%20an%20intensive%20care%20unit%2C%20and%20seven%20of%20the%2017%20underwent%20endotracheal%20intubation.%20There%20were%20no%20deaths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">death as a result of Neptune\u2019s Fix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently occurred in June of 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Why Do People Take Tia?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tia has been doing damage on American shores since the turn of the century; however, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4119213\/#:~:text=tianeptine%20is%20an%20efficacious%20%CE%BC%2Dopioid%20receptor%20(MOR)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2014 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> perhaps unintentionally spurred the uptick over the last decade. The study confirmed the viability of tia to work the same receptors as an alternative to other common opiates. A published peer-reviewed article from 2021 analyzed 210 Reddit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/00952990.2021.1904408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media posts that mentioned tia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2012-2020\u2014here are some of the findings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tia is primarily used as an opioid, antidepressant, and brain booster.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motivations for using tia include: tapering off and substitution from other drugs (including kratom), self-treatment for mental issues, and desire for a better quality of life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comments regarding the positive effects of tia gradually reduced between 2014\u20132020.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mentions of harmful effects, addiction, and withdrawal increased during the same time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These days, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/QuittingTianeptine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subreddits like r\/QuttingTianeptine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> foster a community built on helping each other beat addictions to the drug. General information on the homepage includes valuable experience and insights related to abstinence, withdrawals, and other frequently asked questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Kratom Is the Most Well-Known Gas Station Drug<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/whats-all-the-hype-about-kratom\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kratom is a centuries-old compound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> naturally derived from the leaves of a Southeast Asian tree. Those leaves contain over 40 different alkaloids, one of which, mitragynine, interacts with the same opioid receptors as tia, while another\u20147-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH)\u2014may also contribute to feelings of dependency and withdrawal. People also potentially take kratom to provide everyday therapeutic functionality and tranquility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>What Are The Side Effects of Kratom Use?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same study also analyzed data, establishing that kratom withdrawal symptoms can start in as little as a day. The biggest side effect of kratom is, of course, death\u2014the CDC reported <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/68\/wr\/mm6814a2.htm#:~:text=Kratom%20was%20determined%20to%20be%20a%20cause%20of%20death%20(i.e.%2C%20kratom%2Dinvolved)%20by%20a%20medical%20examiner%20or%20coroner%20for%2091%20(59.9%25)%20of%20the%20152%20kratom%2Dpositive%20decedents%2C%20including%20seven%20for%20whom%20kratom%20was%20the%20only%20substance%20to%20test%20positive%20on%20postmortem%20toxicology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kratom to be the cause of death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 91 out of 152 Kratom-related health emergencies, 7 of which no other substances were found in postmortem toxicology reports.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Synthesized 7-OH Just May Be the Most Addictive Gas Station Drug<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7-OH, as mentioned, is an alkaloid naturally found in kratom\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6598159\/#:~:text=typically%20less%20than%200.05%25%20of%20the%20dried%20leaf%20mass\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">typically at less than .05%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Synthetic 7-OH is a gas station drug version of the naturally-derived compound from the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mitragyna speciosa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tree\u2019s leaves. Animal studies conducted in 2017 demonstrated that 7-OH is astoundingly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acsmedchemlett.7b00298#:~:text=7%2DHydroxymitragynine%20was%2013%2Dfold%20more%20potent%20than%20morphine%20and%2046%2Dfold%20more%20potent%20than%20mitragynine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13x more potent than morphine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and 46x more potent than mitragynine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> People purchase and consume 7-OH in several different forms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellness capsules and tablets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vape pens and cartridges<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis edible-like gummies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinks resembling shots and energy drinks.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s digest this statistic for a moment\u2014the insane potency found in 7-OH products potentially has a massively more severe rate of potential dependency and withdrawal than that of even morphine and fentanyl\u2014and can be bought by anyone right at the local corner store. Kennedy\u2019s intention to \u201cMake America Healthy Again\u201d is rife with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/390\/bmj.r1804\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more disinformation in several months<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than perhaps any other Health and Human Services (HHS) tenure ever.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of the statements made by Kennedy, the FDA, and the HHS must typically be processed through a bullshit filter more than ever since the current presidential administration is seemingly intent on misleading the majority of Americans in the name of some type of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/10.2105\/AJPH.2025.308123#:~:text=power%20imbalances%20are%20at%20the%20very%20heart%20of%20health%20inequities%2C%20and%20how%20such%20imbalances%20are%20a%20key%20feature%20of%20authoritarian%2C%20far%2Dright%20politics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unfolding authoritarian agenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This misinformation even includes dangerous substances like 7-OH.
