The number of certified medical cannabis <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/benefits-of-a-medical-marijuana-card\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patients in adult-use states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has drastically declined. Many other states, meanwhile, particularly in the South and Midwest, are still trying to hash out the particulars of their programs despite ongoing opposition. There are even old, reliable medical and adult-use states like Colorado with some prohibitionist lawmakers seeking to worsen their programs for patients and providers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal prohibition always throws an interesting wrench into the status of medical marijuana programs across the nation. Cannabis is federally illegal; however, states&#8217; rights in every single state and territory still somehow miraculously supersede this status. Borders between states can be slight; however, when it comes to access to medical marijuana, the divide is often very big.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Latest National Trends<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current Republican presidential administration is going about the business of governing however it sees fit, whether that be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/commentary\/breakingviews\/trumps-degraded-data-is-worse-than-book-cooking-2025-08-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reporting fake statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or ignoring the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/news\/civil-liberties\/trumps-attempt-to-unilaterally-control-state-and-local-funding-is-dangerous-dumb-and-undemocratic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sovereignty of states&#8217; rights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on many different positions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The destructive, often anti-democratic tendencies at the federal level have now permeated down to the states. State legislators\u2014mostly Republican\u2014are now emboldened to carry out their personal, religious, or social agendas at the state level. These actions are embodied by some select state governors refusing to entertain any possibility of the establishment of medical marijuana or expansion, while many Republican state legislators are currently running amok to rescind and worsen many of their states&#8217; current medical marijuana and adult-use programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40354 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/cambridge-jenkins-iv-e1KYRCR8SI8-unsplash-285x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cannabis bud on a peri dish\" width=\"896\" height=\"943\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/cambridge-jenkins-iv-e1KYRCR8SI8-unsplash-285x300.jpg 285w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/cambridge-jenkins-iv-e1KYRCR8SI8-unsplash-972x1024.jpg 972w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/cambridge-jenkins-iv-e1KYRCR8SI8-unsplash-768x809.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/cambridge-jenkins-iv-e1KYRCR8SI8-unsplash-1458x1536.jpg 1458w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/cambridge-jenkins-iv-e1KYRCR8SI8-unsplash-1944x2048.jpg 1944w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 896px) 100vw, 896px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>Healthcare Providers &amp; Public Opinion Overwhelmingly Approve of Medical Marijuana<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The irony is that peer-reviewed scientific findings continue to regularly tout the potential benefits of medical cannabis. One such report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/oncology\/articles\/10.3389\/fonc.2025.1490621\/full#:~:text=Across%20all%20categories%20examined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analyzed over 10,000 scientific papers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and concluded that \u201cacross all categories examined\u2014health metrics, cancer treatments, and cancer dynamics\u2014there is a consistent consensus that supports the potential of medical cannabis.\u201d The findings also pushed for the efficacy of cannabis in treating cancer as a &#8220;scientifically validated treatment option&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe these draconian lawmakers would rather their entire electorate be hooked on harmfully addictive opioids instead of non-addictive cannabis? That\u2019s an interesting thought, because the New York State Office of Cannabis Management <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cannabis.ny.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2024\/06\/2023-medical-cannabis-survey-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey from last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> polled thousands of healthcare providers and 123,000 medical patients. The findings were remarkable:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">84% of healthcare providers reported that medical cannabis should be used to reduce opioid dependence to manage pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">75% reported that medical marijuana poses less risk than opioids.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">66% of patients reported that medical weed reduced the need for opioids to deal with pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">86% of patients would recommend medical marijuana to a friend or family member.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite some lawmakers at the state level using the current political environment to do their dirty work\u2014restricting access to medical and adult-use marijuana to their constituents\u2014most states with medical marijuana and their patients continue to hold the line. Support for both adult-use and medical marijuana is still at 54% across the country, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/07\/08\/facts-about-marijuana\/#:~:text=legal%20for%20medical%20and%20recreational%20use%20(54%25)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025 Pew Research poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>State-by-State Medical Marijuana Statuses &amp; Updates<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s time to check back in with how U.S. states are doing with their medical marijuana programs, or lack thereof. While some states wait, others continue to modify their programs for better or worse\u2014are you in the former or the latter? Take a look and see!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Alabama<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alabama has experienced a barrage of setbacks since legalizing non-smokable forms of cannabis in 2021. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amcc.alabama.gov\/cannabis-business-applicants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AMCC awarded licenses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> several years ago, but licensing disputes and lawsuits continue to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Licensing disputes and lawsuits continue to this day, now several years after the AMCC awarded them. According to the AMCC, investigative hearings are set to review the license applicants sometime this summer. The medical marijuana program in Alabama could begin as early as fall 2025, barring any further setbacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Alaska<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical cannabis is used by a small number of patients in Alaska. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/norml.org\/laws\/medical-laws\/alaska-medical-marijuana-law\/#:~:text=ESTIMATED%20NUMBER%20OF%20REGISTERED%20PATIENTS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to NORML<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as of February 2025, there are only 113 registered medical marijuana patients in the state. The already small population of this remote state, along with an adult-use cannabis program, contributes to this small number of patients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Arizona<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Grand Canyon State is another adult-use state; however, its medical marijuana program is still going strong with a large number of active medical marijuana cardholders within its borders. The Arizona Department of Health Services reported <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azdhs.gov\/documents\/licensing\/medical-marijuana\/reports\/2025\/mm-jan25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">87,712 qualified patients in the state<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as of January 2025. The ADHS also reports 136 medical marijuana dispensaries in Arizona as of February 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Arkansas<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arkansas\u2019s medical marijuana community hoped to expand the program with the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment of 2024; however, it seems as though conservative politics have thwarted any effort to move it forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The amendment to Arkansas\u2019s current medical marijuana law, dating back to 2016, would\u2019ve increased the number of recommending medical professionals available. It would also allow those professionals to recommend medical marijuana for any patients they believed could benefit from it, no matter the condition. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/norml.org\/blog\/2024\/10\/21\/arkansas-supreme-court-rules-against-medical-marijuana-ballot-measure\/#:~:text=found%20the%20measure%E2%80%99s%20ballot%20title%20to%20be%20misleading.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arkansas Supreme Court<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vetoed the amendment\u2019s placement on the ballot, citing &#8216;deceptive and misleading&#8217; language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arkansas\u2019s Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders is reportedly not on board with expanding the state\u2019s medical marijuana program. Huckabee-Sanders, however, has no problem lowering the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/03\/10\/1162531885\/arkansas-child-labor-law-under-16-years-old-sarah-huckabee-sanders#:~:text=work%20certificates%20protected%20vulnerable%20youth%20from%20exploitation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legal age of child labor in the state<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leaving open the potential for exploitation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40353 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/linoleum-creative-collective-rTDe8aCbKt0-unsplash-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cannabis leaf\" width=\"890\" height=\"890\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/linoleum-creative-collective-rTDe8aCbKt0-unsplash-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/linoleum-creative-collective-rTDe8aCbKt0-unsplash-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/linoleum-creative-collective-rTDe8aCbKt0-unsplash-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/linoleum-creative-collective-rTDe8aCbKt0-unsplash-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/linoleum-creative-collective-rTDe8aCbKt0-unsplash-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/linoleum-creative-collective-rTDe8aCbKt0-unsplash-2048x2048.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 890px) 100vw, 890px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>California<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2024 bill protects workers in California from being refused hire or fired due to cannabis use. Positive hair and urine tests for medical marijuana patients and adults over 21 are barred from being a determining factor in maintaining employment and being hired, with a few occupational exceptions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/norml.org\/marijuana\/fact-sheets\/marijuana-legalization-and-impact-on-the-workplace\/#:~:text=no%20or%20insufficient%20evidence%20to%20support\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NORML had a big part in this bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, citing numerous sources that cannabis use is not correlated with high rates of accidents on the job.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical patients and adults 21 and over in California are now also able to enjoy Amsterdam-style cannabis cafes to socialize and enjoy a beverage or some food while consuming cannabis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Colorado<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HB25-1296 allows Colorado medical marijuana registry applicants to use a state or federal tax return copy in order to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/CO\/text\/HB1296\/2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">receive an application fee waiver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Officials are now processing this change through rulemaking before officially transcribing it into state law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/leg.colorado.gov\/bills\/sb25-076#:~:text=limits%20on%20the%20serving%20size%20and%20packaging%20size\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A controversial bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking to roll back quantity, potency, and accessibility standards for recreational consumers and medical patients was defeated in committee several months ago. The sponsors of the bill cited the public health of the children in Colorado as the primary reason for the roll-backs, while also being backed by the anti-cannabis lobby Smart Approaches to Marijuana.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Connecticut<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical marijuana patients in Connecticut are flocking to adult-use in droves since full legalization began, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.ct.gov\/Health-and-Human-Services\/Number-of-Medical-Marijuana-Registrants-By-Month\/pjkj-j42u?referrer=embed#:~:text=Number%20of%20Medical%20Marijuana%20Registrants%2C%20By%20Month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a sharp 32% decrease since 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Patients in other states are also now allowed to use their medical cards in Connecticut, to entice them to shop and spend in the state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Delaware<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/legis.delaware.gov\/BillDetail?LegislationId=141114#:~:text=cannabis%2Drelated%20businesses%20that%20are%20licensed%20or%20registered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delaware state law protects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> banks, accounting firms, and transportation services from charges when they work with approved, regulated cannabis companies within Delaware, including the medical and new adult-use programs. August 1, 2025, marked the debut of the state\u2019s adult-use market, whereby most of the medical dispensaries will convert to adult-use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Florida<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida continues to showcase his ignorance of the potential for cannabis in his state by supporting SB-2514, a new law that strips medical marijuana patients of their cards should they plead or be found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2025\/2514#:~:text=revoke%20the%20medical%20marijuana%20use%20registry%20registration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guilty of other offenses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The equally ignorant Florida state legislature passed the law in July of 2025, and is on record as viewing medical marijuana as \u201ca privilege\u201d that they have the exclusive right to revoke from patients. These lawmakers have made such hypocritical declarations while also taking contributions from pharmaceutical companies at the helm of such opposition to access to medical marijuana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Georgia<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/GA\/bill\/SB220\/2025#:~:text=rename%20low%20THC%20oil%20as%20medical%20cannabis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB220<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/GA\/bill\/HB227\/2025#:~:text=rename%20low%20THC%20oil%20as%20medical%20cannabis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HB227<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made solid progress through the Georgia legislature this past year, but unfortunately, did not make the final grade to be passed yet. A study committee, meanwhile, has taken up the cause to discuss the potential expansion of Georgia\u2019s very restrictive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/demystifying-the-low-thc-medical-cannabis-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low-THC-only medical program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The hope is that input from medical professionals, patients, and supportive lawmakers will spur action to expand the program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Hawaii<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/sessions\/session2025\/bills\/GM1343_.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HB-302 was signed into law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Hawaii Governor Josh Green in June of 2025. This new law creates a boost to patient enrollment, allowing for more qualified conditions to be recommended by healthcare professionals. It also calls for the allowance of more dispensaries to be opened, including across the many rural areas of Hawaii\u2019s several different land masses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Primary caregivers in Hawaii are also now protected, courtesy of an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/governor.hawaii.gov\/newsroom\/office-of-the-governor-news-release-gov-green-signs-executive-order-relating-to-medical-cannabis-caregivers\/#:~:text=to%20protect%20caregivers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">executive order signed by Governor Green<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in January of 2025. The order protects patient access to caregivers and allows caregivers to continue to operate in good faith under the current statutes without any fear of reprisal or penalties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Idaho<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Idaho has taken another giant step backward in regards to cannabis, as the only state in the country that now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.idaho.gov\/sessioninfo\/2025\/legislation\/H0007\/#:~:text=possession%20of%20less%20than%20three%20ounces%20of%20marijuana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imposes mandatory minimum penalties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for all first-time, low-level cannabis possession. A minimum fine of $300 also comes with the risk of up to one year in jail for even just minor possession of weed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boisestatepublicradio.org\/politics-government\/2025-03-11\/idaho-senate-marijuana-constitution#:~:text=Under%20the%20measure%2C%20only%20the%20state%20legislature%20could%20legalize%20and%20regulate%20marijuana%2C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another doozy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Idaho lawmakers are seeking to completely remove the will of the voters to pass ballot initiatives that relate to legalization, decriminalization, or any other cannabis legislation. The proposal will be up to the state\u2019s voters to approve in the next election.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Illinois<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four new medical marijuana qualifying conditions were approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health in early 2025. These conditions include<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endometriosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ovarian cysts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uterine fibroids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female orgasmic disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilga.gov\/Legislation\/BillStatus?DocNum=1228&amp;GAID=18&amp;DocTypeID=HB&amp;LegId=157020&amp;SessionID=114&amp;GA=104#:~:text=includes%20cannabis%20or%20cannabis%2Dinfused%20products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amendment has also been introduced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to classify medical cannabis as medicine and, therefore, exempt from state taxes, similar to how prescription drugs are deemed in Illinois. It also eliminates double taxation that\u2019s found on some medical cannabis products under both the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act and the\u00a0 Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program Act.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Indiana<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite bipartisan support for some form of decriminalization in Indiana, at the very least, several bills did not pass the state legislature for approval this past year. The only laws passed by Indiana officials regarding cannabis recently banned any advertising of cannabis anywhere in the state and established a THC limit to determine intoxication while driving.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Iowa<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iowans are still currently stuck with their restrictive, non-flower dispensing medical marijuana program. Hope, however, persists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/legislation\/BillBook?ga=91&amp;ba=HF105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the form of HF-105<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, currently under committee review in the Iowa state legislature. If passed, the bill allows for cannabis buds to be cultivated and sold to medical patients. The program only allows for capsules, vapeable oil, and tinctures in each of its five statewide medical dispensaries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Kansas<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several bills related to cannabis possession, legalization, and veterans were rejected in 2025 by a primarily Republican state legislature. Kansas is one of just a small handful of states in the\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S., without a medical or adult-use program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Kentucky<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A regulatory audit is still investigating the Kentucky medical marijuana program\u2019s lottery system that allocated licenses for cannabis businesses earlier in 2025. Despite the wait, sales will hopefully launch at some point in 2025 once the audit is resolved. Over 8,000 patients have already been issued their cards. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kymedcan.ky.gov\/Pages\/index.aspx#:~:text=reduce%20Kentuckians%27%20reliance%20on%20addictive%20opioids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governor Andy Beshear is steadfast in his desire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to \u201creduce Kentuckians\u2019 reliance on addictive opioids and provide them with relief from severe and chronic pain\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Louisiana<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The state of Louisiana enacted a series of new laws aimed at its medical marijuana program. Reciprocity is now allowed for out-of-state patients in Louisiana who meet the right qualifying criteria. Protection from prosecution is provided by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.la.gov\/Legis\/Law.aspx?d=98880#:~:text=Immunity%20from%20prosecution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HB-137 for medical marijuana patients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as visiting patients in regards to cannabis violations. Medical and health professionals of varying degrees can also now recommend medical marijuana to qualifying patients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Law enforcement can no longer use the odor of cannabis as probable cause to search a residence without a warrant, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.la.gov\/legis\/BillInfo.aspx?i=242437#:~:text=for%20the%20odor%20of%20marijuana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thanks to HB-629<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other laws passed include those to improve production and testing systems, and a new fee establishment for producers of medical marijuana. Another law prohibits and penalizes drivers and passengers who smoke or vape weed while operating an automobile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Maine<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A state representative from Maine introduced legislation that would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainelegislature.org\/LawMakerWeb\/summary.asp?ID=280098963#:~:text=Institute%20Testing%20and%20Tracking%20of%20Medical%20Use%20Cannabis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ensure testing for potency and contaminants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in medical marijuana meets the same standards as the current Maine adult-use program. Maine is the only state with a medical marijuana program that doesn\u2019t test for contaminants such as residual pesticides, fungal contaminants, and toxic metals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maine\u2019s Office of Cannabis Policy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/dafs\/ocp\/sites\/maine.gov.dafs.ocp\/files\/inline-files\/OCP%20Fall%202023%20Medical%20Testing%20Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that 42%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of randomly tested medical marijuana strains and products contained contaminants..\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Maryland<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State senators from Maryland <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mgaleg.maryland.gov\/mgawebsite\/Legislation\/Details\/hb1408?ys=2025RS#:~:text=based%20on%20the%20employee%27s%20use%20of%20medical%20cannabis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed a bill in March of 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that protects firefighters, emergency, and rescue workers in Maryland from termination, suspension, or any disciplinary penalties for using cannabis while off-duty. The bill applies to any of those types of workers in Maryland who are card-carrying medical marijuana patients. State senate committees are currently reviewing the bill before it hopefully reaches the desk of Governor Wes Moore (D).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Massachusetts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission has taken some serious heat over the years for its vertical integration requirement for medical marijuana operators that doesn\u2019t apply to adult-use operators. Medical marijuana operators in the state must meet the requirements of having a dispensary, cultivation center, and manufacturing center, along with about $40,000 more in licensing fees upfront compared to adult-use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This large disparity has caused many medical marijuana operators to bail on owning and operating a strictly medical facility, which has also deeply affected patient access to medical-only products and dispensaries. State representatives hoping to modify the rule <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Bills\/194\/SD2048#:~:text=legislation%20to%20modernize%20Massachusetts%20medical%20marijuana%20program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently introduced legislation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the state\u2019s House of Representatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Michigan<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michigan is the country\u2019s second-largest cannabis market, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/cra\/resources\/cannabis-regulatory-agency-licensing-reports\/cannabis-regulatory-agency-statistical-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$3.29 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in adult-use and medical marijuana sales, with medical weed only accounting for about $18 million of that enormous figure. Average prices for recreational cannabis often dip below the price of medical cannabis, causing Michiganders to opt for adult-use weed instead. Legislators in the state have discussed combining both markets; however, there is no current legislation to do so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Minnesota<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the wake of Minnesota\u2019s fresh adult-use cannabis market, legislators in Minnesota are in the process of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.revisor.mn.gov\/bills\/text.php?number=SF2371&amp;version=latest&amp;session=ls94&amp;session_year=2025&amp;session_number=0#:~:text=may%20unreasonably%20limit%20a%20patient%27s%0Aaccess%20to%20or%20use%20of%20medical%20cannabis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ironing out a bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that would improve patient access to medical marijuana. According to the bill, caregivers and patients would be allowed to grow up to 8 plants apiece, along with improvements for native operators and patients, as well as reciprocity rules for visiting patients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lawmakers in Minnesota have also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.revisor.mn.gov\/bills\/bill.php?f=SF2370&amp;b=senate&amp;y=2025&amp;ssn=0#:~:text=Omnibus%20Cannabis%20Policy%20Bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">solidified protections for medical marijuana patients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the workplace. Employers must now be more forthcoming as to why they are disciplining or firing a registered patient in the state. Current laws protect all legal consumers of cannabis from discrimination during a job candidacy, while most workplaces are already barred from testing for cannabis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Mississippi<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mississippi bans medical marijuana operators from using any sort of advertising, including basic information like where they are located and how much their products cost. One state-based operator appealed this injustice to the U.S. The Supreme Court, which, to nobody, declined to hear the case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mississippi medical patients and operators must also now comply with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/billstatus.ls.state.ms.us\/documents\/2025\/html\/SB\/2700-2799\/SB2748IN.htm#:~:text=TO%20DESIGNATE%20ONE%20UNIT%20OF%20MMCEU%20AS%20ONE%20GRAM%20OF%20TOTAL%20THC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new units of measurement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for concentrates and infused products that correlate one unit with one gram total of THC. A recent update to the program removes the requirement for homebound patients to undergo in-person assessments for medical marijuana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Missouri<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advocates for patient access to medical marijuana are hoping to overturn a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.mo.gov\/safety\/cannabis\/faqs-patient.php#:~:text=6%20ounces%20of%20dried%2C%20processed%20marijuana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confusing policy in Missouri<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that doesn\u2019t allow medical patients to buy any adult-use weed once their medical allotment is reached. The state limits patients to purchasing only 6 ounces monthly, while recreational consumers can purchase up to 3 ounces every single day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Montana<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear-mongerers in the Montana state senate are hoping to remove high-potency products \u201cto send a message\u201d that there are negative health risks associated with cannabis, especially for the youth. This change would apply to recreational and medical products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was no mention by the same lawmakers of the fact that alcohol-impaired driving caused <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdt.mt.gov\/visionzero\/plans\/impaired.aspx#:~:text=34%25%20of%20all%20fatalities%20in%20Montana%20were%20the%20result%20of%20alcohol%2Dimpaired%20driving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">34% of all fatalities in Montana during 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a large total that far exceeds the national average.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40355 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/len-mora-aXQUV3MUGKk-unsplash-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"cannabis bud\" width=\"876\" height=\"584\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/len-mora-aXQUV3MUGKk-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/len-mora-aXQUV3MUGKk-unsplash-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/len-mora-aXQUV3MUGKk-unsplash-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/len-mora-aXQUV3MUGKk-unsplash-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/len-mora-aXQUV3MUGKk-unsplash-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 876px) 100vw, 876px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>Nebraska<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sos.nebraska.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/doc\/regulations\/Emergency%20Regs\/Emergency%20Regulations%20238%20NAC%201%20(effective%20through%209-28-25).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governor Jim Pillen has approved the roll-out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the licensing process for medical cannabis facilities to begin by October 1, 2025. The Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission has received public feedback and is looking to stave off opposition, specifically from the Nebraska Attorney General. Nebraska voters approved legalized medical weed in November of 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Nevada<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevada is taking the federal government to task with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leg.state.nv.us\/Session\/83rd2025\/Bills\/SJR\/SJR10.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resolution seeking to get Congress to reschedule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the status of psilocybin, psilocin, DMT, ibogaine, mescaline, and MDMA. They argue that these natural medicines provide therapy while not leading to overdoses and addiction under medical supervision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>New Hampshire<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State legislators in New Hampshire are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gc.nh.gov\/bill_status\/billinfo.aspx?id=235#:~:text=amending%20the%20penalties%20for%20the%20possession%20and%20use%20of%20a%20quantity%20of%20psilocybin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working on reducing the penalties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a first offense of psilocybin possession. A Republican-led state senate excluded the home cultivation provision for medical patients and caregivers in a revised bill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>New Jersey<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission recently approved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/cannabis\/news-events\/approved\/20250715.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several cannabis consumption lounges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the state, where both recreational consumers age 21 and over and medical patients can purchase weed to smoke inside. The lounges are a safe space that can hopefully bring engagement and community to the experience. Medical patients can bring their own weed to enjoy at the lounges, provided it is sealed and labeled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/norml.org\/news\/2025\/01\/02\/new-jersey-certain-public-employees-eligible-for-medical-cannabis-healthcare-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another milestone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, city employees of Trenton, along with employees of the cities of Orange and Teaneck, are now eligible to receive discounted telehealth appointments and discounted medical marijuana from several healthcare providers and dispensaries, provided they are currently registered patients. This passage is the first time a non-cannabis industry employer in the U.S. has ever offered medical cannabis as an employee healthcare benefit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>New Mexico<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmlegis.gov\/Legislation\/Legislation?chamber=H&amp;legtype=B&amp;legno=230&amp;year=25#:~:text=CANNABIS%20TESTING%20CERTAIN%20EMPLOYEES\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HB-230 in the New Mexico legislature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is currently under review. This bill will potentially shield medical marijuana patients in the state from employment discrimination while eliminating the majority of employment-related drug testing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite efforts from other New Mexico legislators, a federal court shot down a separate bill seeking to get health insurance companies to cover medical marijuana in April 202<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>New York\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/NY\/bill\/S03689\/2025#:~:text=Title-,Prohibits%20the%20eviction%20of%20tenants%20for%20using%20medical%20marihuana,-for%20a%20certified\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York State Senate Bill SB-3689<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is currently working its way through the legislative process in the hope of protecting tenants from being evicted by a landlord for using medical marijuana.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an affront to consumers and patients alike, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/NY\/bill\/A00977\/2025#:~:text=Summary-,Limits%20the%20potency%20of%20cannabis%20flower,-to%2015%20percent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assembly Bill 977<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is currently being chaired in a committee. This restrictive bill will keep maximum THC flower potency at 15%, along with a 25% THC potency restriction for all other cannabis products in the adult-use program. How does this affect medical patients? Many products can\u2019t be found in medical dispensaries, so patients must often frequent adult-use dispensaries. Removing safe, tested, readily available products will only force some consumers and patients to the unregulated black and gray markets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>North Carolina\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As one of the few states without a medical marijuana program, the hope in 2025 was that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.gov\/BillLookup\/2025\/S350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB-350 would change that unfortunate status<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; however, as of now, lawmakers have stalled the bill, and it isn\u2019t currently under consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the bright side, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein signed an executive order mandating the creation of the North Carolina Advisory Council on Cannabis. He hopes to bring both sides of the aisle together to iron out a plan with input from state officials to provide safe access to potential medical cannabis patients in the state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>North Dakota<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of August 1, 2025, North Dakota medical marijuana patients can now access <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ndlegis.gov\/assembly\/69-2025\/regular\/bill-overview\/bo1203.html#:~:text=regulating%20edible%20medical%20marijuana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low-dosage THC edibles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while also extending the expiration of medical cards to two years after being issued or recertified. Telehealth screenings and out-of-state reciprocity are also now options for medical patients<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Ohio<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ohio\u2019s Republican-led supermajority in its state legislature is at it again\u2013this time looking to overturn the will of the voters who voted for adult-use legalization. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.ohio.gov\/legislation\/136\/sb56\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">state senate has already passed SB-56<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it\u2019s making its way through the House. This affront to consumers and patients alike seeks to:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce homegrown plant cultivation numbers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cap the number of retailers statewide.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implement potency maximums.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steal tax dollars from invested state programs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institute possession penalties for sharing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Oklahoma<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The medical marijuana program in Oklahoma used to be somewhat of an oasis of hope within a desert of midwestern and southern cannabis contempt. Once the program was in operation, starting in 2021, almost 10,000 cannabis grows were licensed with the state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Officials eventually put caps in place on the number of operators, as well as several new laws for the program that went into effect in 2025. Most of these laws involved licensing and testing rules and standards, but also the banning of deli-style dispensing of weed for patients; all flower must now be pre-packaged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Oregon<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis cafes in Oregon are hopefully a reality after the 2026 election. Previous efforts to pass a medical marijuana bill in the South Carolina House of Representatives have continued to fail over the last decade, including earlier in 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>South Dakota<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical marijuana patients and advocates in South Dakota celebrated the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sdlegislature.gov\/Session\/Bill\/25774\/275209#:~:text=modify%20medical%20cannabis%20certification%20requirements.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defeat of a bill seeking to eliminate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the state\u2019s voter-approved medical marijuana program earlier this year. State officials believe the designation can help sustain a severely diminished medical dispensary industry in Vermont that recreational dispensaries have all but put out of business. State legislators intended HB-1989 to improve labeling safety and patient delivery access, but the governor vetoed it due to personal bias.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Washington\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients in Washington state are no longer on the hook for excessive taxation when purchasing specific Department of Health-approved products. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?Year=2023&amp;BillNumber=1453#:~:text=Providing%20a%20tax%20exemption%20for%20medical%20cannabis%20patients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Products with this designation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have higher safety and compliance testing compared to adult-use products\u2013they\u2019re also not subject to the state\u2019s absurd 37% cannabis tax. While the removal of excessive taxes is a great win for medical marijuana patients in Washington state, adults over 21 and patients still await the legalization of homegrown<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Washington D.C.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite its non-statehood status, Washington, D.C. has allowed for decriminalization and legal \u201cgifting\u201d sales for well over a decade now. The Washington D.C. Council passed a framework expanding the medical marijuana program in 2023, allowing stores that \u201cgift\u201d weed to get licensed. Cannabis stores must now sell all compliant products or risk closure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>West Virginia<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">West Virginia lawmakers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wvlegislature.gov\/Bill_Status\/bills_text.cfm?billdoc=hb2765%20intr.htm&amp;yr=2025&amp;sesstype=RS&amp;i=2765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduced HB-2765 in February 2025<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; it still awaits further review. The bill, if passed, will greatly expand the state\u2019s medical marijuana program. These improvements include the allowance of any medical condition to qualify, as per a physician, and more leeway to recommend cannabis to patients, also determined by a physician.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Wisconsin<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Republican-led legislature has again stood in the way of adult-use and medical marijuana programs being established in Wisconsin. The prohibitionist Republican majority in the budget committee removed Governor Tony Evers\u2019 designation to establish adult-use and medical programs in May 2025. Wisconsin is one of the few states in the country that has no adult-use or medical programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Wyoming<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite having many surrounding states with medical and adult-use programs, Wyoming continues to hold steady as another prohibitionist state with no signs of letting up.
