You lose IQ points.\u201d Former congressman and MSNBC host <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2014\/01\/joe-scarborough-opinion-piece-of-marijuana-and-ignorance-101879#:~:text=27%20PM%20EST-,Pot%20just%20makes%20you%20dumb.,-Oops.%20I%20said\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe Scarborough<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> similarly opined, \u201cPot just makes you dumb.\u201d While Trump and Scarborough aren\u2019t exactly pillars of scientific truth, their remarks echo a common belief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For decades, pop culture stereotypes, personal and racial biases, and old-school anti-cannabis propaganda have fueled the idea that weed lowers intelligence. But is it true? To answer, we first need to understand how cannabis affects your brain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>HOW CANNABIS AFFECTS YOUR BRAIN<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the cannabis plant are hundreds of compounds called cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. Because the endocannabinoid system helps regulate mood, memory, pain, appetite, and more, cannabinoids can have a wide range of physical and mental effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychoactive cannabinoids like THC primarily bind to your brain\u2019s CB1 receptors, causing changes in memory, mood, coordination, and perception of time. In short, you get \u201chigh,\u201d and the more THC you consume, the more intense these effects might be. It interacts with a whole network of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7796924\/#:~:text=Although%20direct%20effects,Campos%202017).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 65 molecular targets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that shape how your body and mind respond, producing effects that range from euphoric highs to deep introspection and relaxation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, cannabis mind-altering effects may interfere with brain development in young people, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/alcohol-and-adolescent-brain#:~:text=More%20and%20more,into%20adulthood.8%2C9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">much like alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But assuming non-adults using cannabis increases the risk of cognitive issues, what about people who only started using in adulthood? In fact, lifestyle factors like sleep, stress, and alcohol use tend to have a bigger impact on adult cognition than cannabis alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE STILL BELIEVE WEED LOWERS INTELLIGENCE?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several factors have helped keep alive the belief that cannabis lowers intelligence, from comments by public figures like President Trump to stoner portrayals in pop culture. For example, early 2000s comedies like \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dude, Where\u2019s My Car?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d or pretty much any older movie involving Seth Rogen. These <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/10-cannabis-friendly-movies-that-will-leave-you-in-high-spirits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stoner flicks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helped shape public perception and cement the stereotype of the \u201cdumb stoner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, we can\u2019t forget the infamous Afroman hit, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because I Got High<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d which is basically the weed anthem. With lyrics like, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was gonna go to class before I got high\u2026 I coulda cheated and I coulda passed, but I got high\u2026 I&#8217;m taking it next semester, and I know why\u2026<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d you can\u2019t really blame people who believe cannabis makes you a little slower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Propaganda from throughout the 1900s also played a role, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/a-look-back-at-anti-cannabis-propaganda-through-time\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-cannabis campaigns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that painted users as lazy, unmotivated, or even dangerous. Many boomers and Gen X have kept that gospel alive, sharing it with their kids, grandkids, and anyone who\u2019ll listen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, some people believe cannabis makes them dumber simply because of their own experiences. And since marijuana hits everyone a little differently, it makes sense that not all users have the same story to tell.
