And you can\u2019t blame them \u2013 smoking delivers effects much faster than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/edibles\/pros-cons\/#:~:text=Cannabis%20High%20Last%3F-,THE%20PROS%20AND%20CONS%20OF%20EDIBLES%20VS.%20SMOKING,-Whether%20you%20prefer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ingesting cannabis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and blunts or raw flower are often more accessible than vapes and dabs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, as beneficial as cannabis can be, smoking it carries unique potential health risks, especially to your lungs and airways. Could that include lung cancer? Some researchers think so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>YOUR LUNGS\u2019 ROLE IN ABSORBING CANNABIS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your lungs play an essential role in absorbing cannabinoids when you inhale cannabis smoke or vapor. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/types-of-thc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/debunking-cbd-misconceptions-and-more-in-josh-kaplan-phds-research-lab\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cannabidiol (CBD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other compounds in inhaled smoke enter your bloodstream quickly through tiny air sacs in your lungs (alveoli). That\u2019s much faster than orally ingested cannabis, which has to pass through the stomach and liver before reaching the bloodstream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inhaling cannabinoids via smoking also offers higher bioavailability, meaning more of the compounds reach your bloodstream. For example, your body absorbs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8803256\/#:~:text=After%20inhalation%2C%20THC%20and%20its%20metabolites%20enter%20the%20bloodstream%20quickly%20through%20the%20lung%2C%20with%20the%20peak%20achieved%20within%206%20to%2010%20minutes%20after%20inhalation.30%20Across%20all%20users%2C%20light%20and%20heavy%2C%20the%20bioavailability%20for%20inhaled%20THC%20is%20between%2010%25%20and%2035%25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10% to 35%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of THC when you smoke, while a lot of the cannabinoid is lost during digestion if you eat an edible. In summary, your lungs act as a gateway for inhaled cannabis compounds to quickly and efficiently enter your bloodstream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>CAN SMOKING CANNABIS CAUSE LUNG CANCER?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inhaling anything but clean air into your lungs can potentially cause harm. Smoking cannabis is no different, but can it cause lung cancer? Scientists aren\u2019t collectively sure yet. According to a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2755855#:~:text=Our%20systematic%20review,developing%20lung%20cancer.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 systematic review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and meta-analysis of 25 studies, no clear or strong link exists between marijuana use and lung, head, neck, and oral cancers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40609 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pexels-shvetsa-4226259-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"xray of a lung\" width=\"881\" height=\"587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pexels-shvetsa-4226259-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pexels-shvetsa-4226259-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pexels-shvetsa-4226259-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pexels-shvetsa-4226259.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 881px) 100vw, 881px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A separate and earlier 2014 study published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/deepblue.lib.umich.edu\/bitstream\/handle\/2027.42\/109841\/ijc29036.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Journal of Cancer<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported similar results. Involving 2,159 lung cancer patients and 2,985 controls pooled from 6 case-control studies, it found little evidence connecting cannabis smoking to lung cancer overall. Habitual, daily, and long-term use showed no clear increase in risk. However, the study acknowledged that heavy, prolonged use may carry potential risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16054989\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2005 epidemiologic review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of marijuana use and cancer risk, also published on the WHO FCTC website, found no clear link between cannabis <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/extranet.who.int\/fctcapps\/fctcapps\/fctc\/kh\/wts\/wts-database\/epidemiologic-review-marijuana-use-and-cancer-risk#:~:text=In%20the%20cohort%20studies%2C%20increased%20risks%20of%20lung%20or%20colorectal%20cancer%20due%20to%20marijuana%20smoking%20were%20not%20observed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoking and lung cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It also noted that limited and inconsistent evidence hinders drawing firm conclusions, though the potential risk remains a concern. In many cases and cultures in Europe, Northern Africa, and West Asia, cannabis and tobacco use are routinely mixed and therefore confound overall study results like these.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these studies don\u2019t show a clear connection between smoking marijuana and lung cancer, it doesn\u2019t guarantee that there isn\u2019t at least some risk. A 2021 article published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publications.ersnet.org\/content\/erj\/57\/5\/2004132#:~:text=In%20conclusion%2C%20this,importance%20of%20cessation.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Respiratory Journal<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlighted that many young patients with surgically removed lung cancer tumors often underreport cannabis use. However, underreporting cannabis use is understandably common among all patients for complex reasons, both legal and personal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason, the authors warned that cannabis could be an overlooked risk factor. They strongly recommended stronger reporting, screening, and research to clarify the herb\u2019s possible role in lung cancer. A big factor that complicates this is that there is no ICD-10 diagnosis code for routine medical cannabis use, only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/veriheal.medium.com\/how-cannabis-use-disorder-differs-from-frequent-cannabis-use-77bf141fb3f8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cannabis use disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which aren\u2019t the same, and this currently skews results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s also the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/eurpub\/article\/24\/suppl_2\/cku162-039\/2839193#:~:text=At%20the%20baseline,CI%20%3D%200.16%2D0.98).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014 cohort study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which tracked 49,321 Swedish men between the ages of 18 and 20 for 39 to 40 years. Researchers found that those who admitted to using cannabis heavily as teens (over 50 times before age 20) more than doubled their risk of lung cancer. This link remained even after accounting for smoking, alcohol use, respiratory issues, and socioeconomic status. The findings suggest that frequent use in youth may raise long-term cancer risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>FACTORS THAT RAISE LUNG CANCER RISK FROM SMOKING CANNABIS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Available research hasn\u2019t proven beyond a reasonable doubt that smoking cannabis can cause lung cancer. But we do know that certain factors make the disease more likely. These factors include:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>Age and Frequency of Use<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The earlier-mentioned 2014 Swedish cohort study provides some evidence that heavy cannabis use in youth might increase the risk of lung <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/eurpub\/article\/24\/suppl_2\/cku162-039\/2839193#:~:text=We%20provide%20initial%20longitudinal%20evidence%20that%20cannabis%20use%20in%20adolescence%20and%20young%20adulthood%20might%20elevate%20the%20risk%20of%20subsequent%20development%20of%20lung%20cancer.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cancer later in life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Young individuals are likely at a higher risk because their lungs are still developing, and prolonged exposure to smoke particulates and toxins during this stage can cause lasting damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>Cannabis Quality<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis grown with pesticides, mold, or other contaminants can be toxic and carry additional health risks, including lung cancer risks. For example, studies linked pesticides like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10904940\/#:~:text=Some%20studies%20also,pendimenthalin%2019%20.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlorpyrifos, diazinon, and dieldrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a higher risk of lung cancer. Smoking cannabis flower contaminated with these chemicals exposes the lungs to cancer-causing compounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>Rolling Paper Quality<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many commercially available <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11064008\/#:~:text=One%20factor%20that%20has%20received%20little%20attention%20is%20the%20possible%20exposure%20to%20potentially%20hazardous%20levels%20of%20toxic%20elements%20from%20rolling%20(smoking)%20papers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rolling papers contain toxic elements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can expose your lungs to cancer-causing toxins. For example, papers made from recycled or dyed materials may contain pesticides, bleaches, or other contaminants that release toxic smoke when burned. Improve your smoke sessions by opting for cleaner <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/rolling-paper-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rolling paper alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like rice rolling paper and hemp paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>Pre-Existing Health Conditions<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-existing health conditions can make your lungs more vulnerable to damage from cannabis smoke. If you have asthma, chronic bronchitis, or other respiratory issues, the illnesses have likely already inflamed or weakened your lung tissue. Inhaling cannabis smoke in this condition exposes your lungs to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/lung-cancer\/causes-risks-prevention\/risk-factors.html#:~:text=We%20do%20know%20that%20smoking%20marijuana%20will%20irritate%20your%20lungs%20and%20possibly%20increase%20your%20risk%20of%20getting%20more%20lung%20infections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irritants, tar, and carcinogens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can worsen inflammation and functioning. These combined effects may increase the risk of developing lung cancer over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>5.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><b>Combining with Tobacco<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/quit-smoking\/smoking-facts\/health-effects\/smoking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the American Lung Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, smoking tobacco can cause lung disease and several cancers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has even labeled tobacco smoke the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/about\/cigarettes-and-cancer.html#:~:text=Cigarette%20smoking%20or%20secondhand%20smoke%20exposure%20cause%20nearly%209%20out%20of%2010%20lung%20cancer%20deaths.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leading cause of lung cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As such, mixing your weed with tobacco (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/choosing-between-spliffs-and-joints-a-stoners-guide-to-understanding-the-difference\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spliffs or using tobacco leaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for rolling papers) can significantly increase your likelihood of getting lung cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>OTHER LUNG RISKS OF DAILY MARIJUANA SMOKING<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides lung cancer, regularly smoking marijuana poses several other potential health hazards. These risks come from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/en\/folio\/2020\/06\/u-of-a-researchers-identify-more-than-100-toxic-chemicals-in-cannabis-smoke.html#:~:text=Among%20the%20billions,by%20burning%20tobacco.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhaling tar, carcinogens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other harmful chemicals found in cannabis smoke. The biggest of these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/the-health-risks-you-need-to-be-aware-of-when-smoking-blunts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marijuana smoking risks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2998526\/#:~:text=Marijuana%20or%20%22bong,greater%20drug%20effect.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bong lung<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a condition caused by regularly inhaling cannabis smoke. It\u2019s more common among bong users, and it can lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/quit-smoking\/smoking-facts\/health-effects\/marijuana-and-lung-health#:~:text=Smoking%20marijuana%20clearly,acute%20bronchitis.6%2C15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic bronchitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, coughing, phlegm, and lung infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, marijuana smoke can injure the cell linings of the large airways leading to your lungs (trachea and bronchi) and reduce lung function over time. Instead, they gently heat flower or cannabis concentrates to release vapor you can inhale at a lower temperature than smoking. Most cannabis concentrates are stronger than even the most potent flower strains, and vaping them delivers cannabinoids more efficiently than smoking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides being more potent, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/how-long-does-cannabis-high-last\/#:~:text=DABBING%20AND%20VAPING%20CONCENTRATES\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaping and dabbing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> avoid many of the risks associated with smoking. Since there\u2019s no combustion, you don\u2019t inhale tar, carbon monoxide, or the other toxic chemicals you get from blunts. This is assuming you control the unit temperature below combustion (550\u00b0F), easily and best done with modern electronically-controlled vaporizer units rather than old-school, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5623941\/#sec1:~:text=Of%20very%20recent,used%20by%20consumers.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flash-dabbing on hot nails<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a blowtorch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, while dabbing and vaping are safer than smoking, they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7757764\/#s3:~:text=Studies%20suggest%20that,%2C21).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aren\u2019t entirely risk-free<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both methods can produce harmful chemicals, particularly if the concentrate contains residual solvents or additives like butane or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/5-truths-you-need-to-know-about-vaping#:~:text=The%20CDC%20has%20identified%20vitamin%20E%20acetate%20as%20a%20chemical%20of%20concern%20among%20people%20with%20EVALI.%20Vitamin%20E%20acetate%20is%20a%20thickening%20agent%20often%20used%20in%20THC%20vaping%20products%2C%20and%20it%20was%20foun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin E acetate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
