An astonishing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/backlinko.com\/tiktok-users#:~:text=TikTok%20has%201.12,people%20use%20TikTok.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.12 billion people worldwide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with 170 million registered American accounts (over half the country), were active on the app in 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TikTok has virtually birthed its own culture, affecting all of us in the process. You\u2019ve likely heard children saying \u201c6-7\u201d or \u201cbussin.\u201d Maybe you\u2019ve seen an influencer filming in the wild. The slang, dances, and memes have stealthily crept their way into our daily lives, whether we want them or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But unlike prior generations of internet youths, we\u2019re not just seeing silly slang coming from TikTok \u2013 we\u2019re also witnessing suppression of speech.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A C*lture of C*nsor*d Sp*ech\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/explodingtopics.com\/blog\/tiktok-earning-stats#:~:text=7%25%20earned%20%24200%2C000%20or%20more.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top 7% of content creators on TikTok<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earn more than $200,000 per year. Some earn well into the millions. For other creators, the average hovers around $20,000 a year \u2013 still a significant source of income for tens of thousands of influencers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you tie up most of your money in an app, you put yourself under its rules and regulations. We\u2019ve dealt with this as a cannabis company; one day, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/censorship-on-social-media-pepetuates-cannabis-stigma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media platforms will permit ads about cannabis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Next, they don\u2019t. And if your content gets demonetized because you said or did something not allowed by TikTok, you risk losing your job and a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of money.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, it\u2019s really not a surprise that TikTok creators censor themselves so much. The app\u2019s algorithm and screening tools are buggy, but they\u2019re also strict. The app is known for pushing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/23\/us\/politics\/trump-biden-tiktok.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right-wing agendas in America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/globalwitness.org\/en\/press-releases\/new-analysis-shows-tiktok-pushing-hard-right-content-in-polish-election\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other countries, and its censorship often quietly buries the LGBTQ+ community, disabled people, or those speaking out against fascism and war. The app\u2019s owners claim this is to prevent them from becoming victims of bullying, but it\u2019s difficult to deny the sinister overtones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why, exactly, TikTok is so strict is a matter of debate. Many attribute it to corporate reluctance to pay for ad space on an app with swearing and adult content, but on Instagram, you can find those things alongside a plethora of advertisers. Others believe it comes from China\u2019s lack of freedom of speech and tight control over its internet. No matter the source, its impact is noticeable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essentially, TikTok has built a system of control that rewards compliance and punishes deviation from the norm, whether that means toning down your language, your politics, or your identity. The app\u2019s wide reach gives it especially powerful control: as it governs the most prominent space for digital culture with tightly enforced, invisible rules, it quietly erases the boundaries of free expression\u2014often without anyone realizing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Algospeak and the Rise of Code Words\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-social-media-algorithms-are-changing-the-way-people-talk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Algospeak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d refers to the creation of a coded language to skirt around algorithms and content moderation, and it\u2019s more prevalent on TikTok than any other social media platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As TikTok exploded in popularity across the U.S. in 2019, it drew in a tsunami of new users \u2013 including plenty of adults far removed from the app\u2019s Musical. ly-era base. Children no longer dominated it, but it still enforced strict rules on swearing and adult content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, TikTok became the \u201cit girl\u201d of social media. Everyone had it. And everyone was trying to become an influencer before the market got too saturated. Naturally, it didn\u2019t take long for algospeak to emerge from the chaos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creators quickly invented their own language, replacing words and phrases like \u201cdead,\u201d \u201csmoking weed,\u201d and \u201csex\u201d with \u201cunalived,\u201d \u201cgardening,\u201d and \u201cseggs.\u201d Their creativity soon influenced everyone on TikTok, who began speaking and writing in euphemisms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some common algospeak words you may have encountered include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCorn\u201d \u2013 porn\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSpicy accountant\u201d \u2013 sex worker\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPenjamins\u201d \u2013 weed vape\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAhh\u201d \u2013 ass\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLe$bean\u201d \u2013 lesbian\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGrape\u201d \u2013 rape\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGoing camping\u201d \u2013 getting an abortion\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cKermit sewer slide\u201d \u2013 commit suicide\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOuid\u201d \u2013 weed\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Countless other words don\u2019t have replacements and are simply forbidden. Soon after, it infiltrated Facebook, YouTube, and Reddit, slowly but surely creeping into every corner of the internet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first, it was fairly innocuous \u2013 an \u201cahh\u201d here, a \u201cPenjamin Franklin\u201d there. It was easy to ignore, for a while, brushing them off as high-school kids merely repeating what they see on TikTok. Unfortunately, it didn\u2019t stay that way, mutating into a near-staple of culture both online and off. I\u2019ve heard people use \u201cgrape\u201d and \u201cunalive\u201d in regular conversation, seeming almost fearful of saying the real thing. People self-censor on platforms that don\u2019t ban swearing (like Reddit), typing out dr*gs or s*x in forums where it\u2019s completely acceptable to discuss such topics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Algospeak may seem harmless. After all, it\u2019s just some censored words, right? But when you dive in, the ugly truth lying beneath these words begins to take shape.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harry Potter <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">series, many of the characters are afraid to say the name of the villainous wizard Voldemort. If they even hear it, they may scream, run away, or pale in fright. It becomes a widespread social stigma, encouraged by the villain, to the point where simply speaking \u201cVoldemort\u201d results in the characters being hunted. The phenomenon is summed up succinctly by wise wizard Dumbledore, who says, \u201cFear of a name only increases fear of the thing itself.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While only a plot point in a children\u2019s book, it speaks to our lives now more than ever. It\u2019s starting to feel taboo to type or say many of the words censored by TikTok, particularly those related to dark topics like death or assault.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But refusing to use those words doesn\u2019t help anybody \u2013 in fact, it can actually make it more challenging for people with trauma to speak out about what has happened to them and find support. It makes it harder to censor tags that may be triggering, as you can\u2019t just block \u201csuicide\u201d \u2013 you have to block \u201csewer slide,\u201d \u201cunalived,\u201d \u201cs*ic*de,\u201d and countless other variations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purity culture and conservative values are on the rise, and self-censorship only threatens to contribute to those causes. An increasing number of young people are disgusted by mentions of sex online. They reject nuance in conversation, adhering to increasingly black-and-white worldviews and political sides. Trad wives, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/articles\/explainer\/what-is-the-manosphere-and-why-should-we-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manosphere<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and anti-LBGTQ+ sentiments are gaining traction \u2013 and it all stems from algorithms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our hyper-connected world allows us to transform language faster than ever before in human history. It\u2019s up to us to make sure it\u2019s a language that works for us, rather than corporations profiting off of our content.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Final Thoughts\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TikTok algospeak certainly has its problems, and it will likely continue to bleed into our lives further as long as the app is around. It\u2019s certainly more than a little worrying that a massive corporation from another country can affect our speech and writing on this level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps, though, there is a bright side: some people find Gen Z\u2019s refusal to back down to content moderation a sign of rebellion. When one word gets banned, another emerges. Young people are routinely creating and innovating new ways to talk about topics that TikTok would rather we ignore, and they\u2019re doing it successfully. The app stays flooded with content about sex, weed, abortion, LGBTQ+ people, and political news, despite facing the strictest moderation ever enforced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Would it be better if we didn\u2019t have to resort to algospeak? Absolutely. But TikTok, for better or worse, isn\u2019t going anywhere.
