Despite this, women have long been excluded from medical trials. Factors like historical bias, policies designed to protect unborn children, and difficulties in recruiting and retaining women kept the medical community from working to better understand how illnesses, medications, and health innovations impact 51% of the population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t until 1993 that Congress <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK236531\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed a law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requiring the inclusion of women in clinical research. That law set things on the right track, but women still only make up 41.2% of participants in all medical trials, according to one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1551714422000441?via%3Dihub#:~:text=Across%201433%20trials%20including%20302%2C664%20participants%20in%20our%20analysis%2C%20on%20average%2C%2041.2%25%20were%20female.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means that there is a huge need for more work to be done in order to understand how to properly treat diseases in women, especially when those diseases are gender-specific.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conditions like endometriosis and fibroids are perfect examples of gender-specific disorders that affect large swaths of the population, but are grossly understudied. According to the Endometriosis Foundation of America, at least an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.endofound.org\/morethan1in10#:~:text=An%20estimated%201%20in%2010%20women%20in%20the%20United%20States%20has%20endometriosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimated 1 in 10 women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the US have endometriosis, yet it remains notoriously difficult to diagnose and has no standard treatment options or targeted medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hopefully, as endometriosis gains more recognition through research, advocacy, and public awareness campaigns, that will all start to change. There are signs that this is already happening: recently, the scientific community <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2077-0383\/12\/22\/7071#:~:text=Versions%C2%A0Notes-,Abstract,interventions%20for%20endometriosis%3B%20however%2C%20clinical%20studies%20are%20required%20to%20determine%20effectiveness.,-Keywords%3A%20endometriosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has begun exploring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whether cannabis could be an effective tool for managing endometriosis and fibroids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Is Endometriosis?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we get into those findings, and whether cannabis could be an effective treatment for endometriosis and fibroids, we need to look at what exactly endometriosis is and what doctors think causes it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/endometriosis#:~:text=Endometriosis%20affects%20up%20to%2010,around%20the%20uterus%20(uterosacral%20ligaments)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johns Hopkins Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, endometriosis occurs when the tissue that lines the uterus, called the endometrium, grows outside the organ. It most often grows on or around other reproductive organs like the fallopian tubes, the ovaries, around the outside of the uterus, or in the lining of the pelvic cavity, though it can also develop on the bladder, cervix, intestines, stomach, and rectum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, healthy endometrial tissue that lines the uterus will shed during each menstrual cycle. Some will have heavy menstrual bleeding, or cause structural issues and symptoms involving the nearby bladder or rectum. However, the two conditions aren\u2019t directly related.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fibroids are noncancerous tumors that develop in the uterus. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/womenshealth.gov\/a-z-topics\/uterine-fibroids#:~:text=Fibroids%20are%20muscular%20tumors%20that,pain%20and%20heavy%20menstrual%20bleeding.%E2%80%9D%20with%20%E2%80%9Chttps:\/\/womenshealth.gov\/a-z-topics\/uterine-fibroids#:~:text=About%2020%20percent%20to%2080%20percent%20of%20women%20develop%20fibroids%20by%20the%20time%20they%20reach%20age%2050.%20Fibroids%20are%20most%20common%20in%20women%20in%20their%2040s%20and%20early%2050s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Office on Women\u2019s Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, between 20 and 80% of women will develop fibroids by the time they turn 50. These tumors can vary in size from as small as an apple seed to as large as a grapefruit, and in many cases, an individual may not even realize that they have fibroids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like with endometriosis, doctors aren\u2019t totally sure what causes fibroids. Though it is thought that genetic factors and imbalances in hormones like estrogen and progesterone could be contributing factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How Can Cannabis Help?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because we don\u2019t yet understand the root causes of endometriosis and fibroids, there is currently no way to cure or prevent these conditions. Doctors have, however, figured out several ways to treat one of the chief symptoms of the conditions: pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nichd.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/endometri\/conditioninfo\/treatment#:~:text=Treatments%20for%20Pain,pain%20after%20surgery.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common treatment options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include hormone therapy, prescription pain medications, conservative surgeries to remove the endometrial tissue or tumors, and even hysterectomies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women who have endometriosis suffer from what one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/can.2016.0035#:~:text=Share-,Abstract,endometriosis%2Dassociated%20pain%20can%20be%20targeted%20by%20modulation%20of%20the%20ECS.,-Introduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 review of studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calls \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diffuse and poorly localized severe pain.\u201d The authors argue that endometriosis-associated pain may be targeted through the endocannabinoid system and several other complex pain mechanisms that cannabis affects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0New research like this seems to indicate that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/cannabinoids-and-the-endocannabinoid-system-a-match-made-in-heaven\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endocannabinoid system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a relevant target for the management of endometriosis-related pain. A complex network of chemical signals and cellular receptors, the endocannabinoid system is not yet fully understood, but experts believe it plays a role in a variety of bodily processes like mood, appetite, pain modulation, motor coordination, and memory. Beyond this, the greater <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/piecing-together-the-endocannabinoidome-charting-the-next-frontier\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endocannabinoidome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains the full range of actions that cannabinoids can take in the body beyond CB1 and CB2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When discussing the endocannabinoid system and pain management, it\u2019s important to note that there are essentially three main categories of endometriosis pain: nociceptive (which arises from damage to body tissues outside the nervous system), inflammatory (which arises from inflammation in the body, which is often caused by tissue damage), and neuropathic (which arises from damage to the nervous system).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The endocannabinoid system has been shown to \u201cinteract with specific mechanisms associated with pain establishment, such as inflammation, cell proliferation and cell survival,\u201d the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/can.2016.0035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review of studies says.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11353223\/#:~:text=Discussion%3A,alleviating%20neuropathic%20discomfort.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">updated 2024 review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on endometriosis reviewed hundreds of studies and confirms these therapeutic avenues, plus relaxing muscles. This means that the endocannabinoid system likely plays a role in all three types of pain, and managing it could go a long way in managing the overall pain levels of those with endometriosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The earlier 2017 review even found that several studies call endometriosis an \u201cendocannabinoid deficiency condition,\u201d highlighting the fact that women with endometriosis have lower levels of endocannabinoid receptors in the uterus. Some experts have suggested that the reduced levels of endocannabinoid receptors could also be causing the excessive growth of endometrial tissue that causes the condition. Those considering using it to treat the physical pain of endometriosis or fibroids should speak with their doctor before implementing it in their treatment plans to ensure it will not negatively impact any other pain medications or hormone treatments.
