Go to enough parties, and you\u2019re sure to see one or more of these drugs being freely used and passed around among friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2020s aren\u2019t the first decade to experience an explosion in recreational drug popularity \u2013 nearly every era throughout the 20th century saw the rise of one substance or another. In the 60s, cannabis took off. The 70s brought about the psychedelic boom. The 80s were dominated by cocaine. The 90s led to the MDMA surge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, we\u2019re using all of those and more \u2013 all at once. Polysubstance use, or the consumption of more than one drug at a time, is bigger than ever. Take a visit to r\/drugs on Reddit to be inundated with terms such as \u201ccandyflipping\u201d or \u201cspeedballs,\u201d which reference combining substances like molly and LSD or cocaine and heroin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s clear by this point that President Nixon\u2019s historic and deeply problematic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/the-war-on-drugs-a-timeline\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">War on Drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> failed to stop the drug trade in America in any measurable way. Addiction and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drugabusestatistics.org\/drug-overdose-deaths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overdoses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have actually gotten worse, largely due to the widespread takeover of hard drugs like fentanyl. But how did we get here? And how do we support the freedom to experiment without crossing the line into harm?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Modern Trends in Party Drugs\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all drugs are created equal, and various substances tend to \u201ctrend\u201d at different points in time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To truly understand what\u2019s popular right now, we need to look at our younger generations \u2013 namely, Millennials and Gen Z. In 2025, party drugs (i.e., ketamine, ecstasy, psychedelics, or nitrous) have dominated on social media and internet forums as fun, mind-expanding, and \u201csafer\u201d substances to experiment with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, even as alcohol use reaches historic lows among young people, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2024\/03\/new-approaches-youth-substance-misuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their drug use continues to increase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While Baby Boomers struggle with alcoholism and prescription opioid abuse, Millennials and Gen Z generally prefer weed, nicotine, and hallucinogens. They\u2019re also more likely to misuse pharmaceuticals like Adderall and Xanax.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cocaine use has become particularly troubling. Although it\u2019s still not as predominant as it was during its peak in the 1980s, it\u2019s making a strong comeback, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unodc.org\/documents\/data-and-analysis\/cocaine\/Global_cocaine_report_2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global cocaine production doubling since 2010<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the U.S., usage rates among young adults have risen steadily over the past five years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, psychedelics are going through a new renaissance, driven by trends like microdosing and psilocybin treatment centers for mental health issues. But most people aren\u2019t doing them at treatment centers \u2013 they\u2019re doing them at parties, raves, or music festivals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The line between \u201cparty drug\u201d and \u201ctherapeutic drug\u201d is blurrier than ever. Ketamine, which was once associated largely with clubs and raves, is now viewed both as a clinical antidepressant and a recreational dissociative. Nitrous oxide, also known as \u201claughing gas,\u201d has seen a similar surge in popularity thanks to its newfound accessibility at smoke shops and gas stations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40887\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40887\" style=\"width: 973px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-40887\" src=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SZA-post-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"SZA X post\" width=\"973\" height=\"1345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SZA-post-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SZA-post.jpg 927w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 973px) 100vw, 973px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40887\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sza\/status\/1836963408152862836\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">X<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rising consumption of these drugs isn\u2019t happening in a vacuum. Instead, it\u2019s a peek into our current culture\u2019s focus on escapism and self-medication \u2013 but our society doesn\u2019t quite seem ready to look at the dark side of these drugs just yet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Culture: How Did We Get Here?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy to want to pin the boom in recreational drugs to black and white reasons, such as the growing positivity around cannabis, the need for self-medication from the stresses of daily life, and influences from movies and music in pop culture. The truth, however, is that all of these and more are adding to the problem, and it\u2019s much more complex than it may initially seem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, look at one of the most common scapegoats: weed legalization. Although weed is overwhelmingly deemed safe for most people, it still regularly gets framed by a shrinking minority as a \u201cgateway drug\u201d that\u2019s capable of corrupting the youth. We now know that this is largely untrue, but those old stigmas led to the creation of programs like D.A.R.E., <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/11\/09\/1211217460\/fentanyl-drug-education-dare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which failed spectacularly at preventing drug use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some believe D.A.R.E. actually exacerbated the problem since they typically preached for total abstinence, often saying that you\u2019d face immediate harm and addiction if you ever tried a drug. When those students grew up and experimented with cannabis or psychedelics, they found this wasn\u2019t true, leading to less fear when trying harder, more harmful drugs like cocaine or Xanax.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve seen this with cannabis and its widespread acceptance as a plant containing genuine health benefits. This has undoubtedly helped millions of people access cannabis as a health tool, but it also means young people may view it as \u201cno big deal.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to cannabis are psychedelics and hallucinogens like mushrooms, LSD, ketamine, and MDMA. With new trials emerging about their potential ability to help lessen severe mental health issues \u2013 and the opening of psychedelic treatment centers in parts of the country \u2013 these substances are increasingly regarded as safe, or even healthy. Music festival culture, movies and TV shows like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euphoria <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narcos, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and pop music all highlight the good side of drugs. With them, you too can stay up all night with ease, escape the collapse of society, and connect with others like you never have before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, we\u2019re faced with underage kids huffing nitrous, college students abusing MDMA, and people from all walks of life doing cocaine on a casual Tuesday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>READ: <a class=\"sc-keVmGr gFomhY\" href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/the-nitrous-fad-and-shifting-cultural-perceptions-of-psychedelics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Nitrous Fad and Shifting Cultural Perceptions of Psychedelics<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Finding the Line\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here at Veriheal, we do believe in the potential healing benefits of substances like mushrooms, cannabis, or MDMA. They certainly have value as an exciting, fun, or spiritual experience, which helped lead to their popularity in the first place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we would be remiss if we didn\u2019t also acknowledge the potential harms of these drugs, particularly if they are used too frequently or by adolescents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every one of these party drugs comes with a catch, even if you don\u2019t see it displayed on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DPmgJD5AXMQ\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instagram reels<\/a>. Nitrous can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/insights\/nitrous-oxide\/#:~:text=Long%20term%20effects%20of%20nangs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nerve damage, seizures, and permanent disabilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cocaine is incredibly addictive and leads to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/research-topics\/trends-statistics\/overdose-death-rates#Fig6:~:text=Drug%20overdose%20deaths%20rose%20from%2012%2C122%20in%202015%20to%2059%2C725%20in%202023.%20Nearly%2070%25%20of%20stimulant%20involved%20overdose%20deaths%20in%202023%20also%20involved%20IMF%20(Source\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thousands of overdoses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a year. A predisposition to poor mental health can be drastically worsened by hallucinogens. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthdirect.gov.au\/mdma-ecstasy#:~:text=Can%20taking%20MDMA%20cause%20long%2Dterm%20problems%3F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MDMA abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may cause severe depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people who try out recreational drugs for a night are fine, and they rarely lead to substance use issues so quickly. As such, it\u2019s easy to see them as safe and slip into a habit where you partake every month \u2013 or every week. From there, things can quickly snowball.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some risks cannot be ignored, but there are also safer ways to move forward. If we want to build a healthier society, we must focus on harm reduction rather than abstinence. The key is awareness: people who are fully, properly educated on both the benefits and risks of substances can make better choices on how to use them. Children need to be given a true understanding of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drugs are harmful to a developing brain and provided support \u2013 not punishment \u2013 if they encounter them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, cultural tides can quickly shift. We\u2019re already seeing it in the \u201csober curious\u201d movement, which is taking off with a more health-conscious Gen Z. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/news\/politics\/poppers-whippets-nitrous-oxide-ban-louisiana-law\/article_8c2a1078-5345-11ef-9eae-73e8bddab32f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Louisiana has banned nitrous oxide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in an effort to prevent children from accessing it (whether or not this is fair to adults is hotly debated).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a healthy line to stay behind when it comes to recreational drugs. Respect your body\u2019s limits, take the time to educate yourself, and don\u2019t make choices based on what\u2019s popular. Substances like mushrooms, cannabis, and MDMA can offer genuine healing and memorable experiences, but they must be used responsibly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By combining education, harm reduction, and cultural mindfulness, we can preserve our freedom to explore while minimizing the very real dangers that come with crossing that line.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nitrous.
