We\u2019re here to help you understand medical marijuana reciprocity and whether or not you can use your medical card in another state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1185-section-0\"><b>What is Medical Marijuana Reciprocity?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you obtain a medical marijuana card, it does not allow you to purchase or utilize marijuana anywhere in the country with a medical program. Generally speaking, that card applies only to the state in which you obtained it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In certain areas, however, you can utilize that card to purchase cannabis in a different state. Some states allow out-of-state medical cards, and others do not. States that allow you to use out-of-state medical cards have what is known as \u201creciprocity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1185-section-1\"><b>Can I Use My Medical Marijuana Card in Another State?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you wondering if you can use your medical marijuana card in another state? It may be tempting to drive across neighboring state lines with more cannabis-friendly laws. However, the number of states that will allow out-of-state medical marijuana cards is still relatively small.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t access a state\u2019s medical marijuana programs, though. Many places will either permit patients access to dispensaries and\/or permit medical cannabis possession within a reasonable amount. Cannabis laws are constantly changing across the country, and it\u2019s refreshing to see that the list of cannabis-friendly states is steadily growing! Let\u2019s take a look at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what states allow out-of-state medical cards<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for visitors who are cannabis patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1185-section-2\"><b>What States Allow Out-of-State Medical Cards in 2024?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/blog\/how-medical-cannabis-programs-differ-throughout-the-united-states\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different levels of cannabis legalization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grow across the country, it\u2019s important to know what you\u2019re looking for in terms of out-of-state cannabis consumption. There are two levels of legalized cannabis: medical and recreational (adult use). The following is a list of states that do have medical marijuana reciprocity laws in place, meaning they will sell you medical marijuana if you have an out-of-state card.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Arizona<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arizona provides limited medical marijuana reciprocity for those who are considered \u201cvisiting qualifying patients.\u201d To be a qualifying patient, you need to hold an out-of-state medical cannabis card and live outside of Arizona or have only lived in Arizona for fewer than 30 days. Qualifying patients must also be licensed in their home state with a condition that meets Arizona\u2019s medical card criteria. These conditions are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glaucoma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV\/AIDS<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hepatitis C<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amyotrophic lateral Sclerosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crohn\u2019s disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agitation of Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cachexia or wasting syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe and chronic pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures, including those characteristic of epilepsy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe or persistent muscle spasms, including those characteristic of multiple sclerosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an approved medical marijuana card in Arizona, you can purchase up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis from a dispensary in Arizona or a designated caregiver every two weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recreational cannabis is legal to purchase in Arizona as of 2021, with a possession limit of up to 2.5 ounces.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Arkansas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those with a valid out-of-state medical recommendation and card can legally purchase medical marijuana in Arkansas, provided they fill out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ammsys.adh.arkansas.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a visiting patient form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can provide proof of their out-of-state medical marijuana registration. Visiting patients also need to pay a $50 application fee. If approved, a visiting patient may purchase medical marijuana in Arkansas for 30 days per application.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Qualified registered patients are allowed to purchase up to 2.5 ounces from a dispensary every 14 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Delaware<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2024, Delaware voted to expand their medical cannabis program and make it easier for residents to access plant medicine. Some of the new stipulations include eliminating the need for a debilitating medical condition, allowing for longer expiration dates, and permitting patients over 65 to self-certify for medical cards. The state also voted to allow medical marijuana reciprocity, so out-of-state cardholders can now utilize their benefits in Delaware just as they would at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Georgia<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May 2021, Governor Kemp signed legislation into law, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/legislativenavigator.ajc.com\/?_gl=1*19ceuzw*_ga*OTk3OTM3NTcyLjE2MTc4OTkwODY.*_ga_6VR7Y4BTY5*MTYxNzg5OTA4NC4xLjEuMTYxNzg5OTY4OC4w#bills\/SB\/195\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senate Bill 195,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which permits 30 state-licensed dispensaries to sell high-CBD\/low-THC oil products to eligible patients. Out-of-state patients with medical cannabis cards in their home states are allowed to purchase low-THC oil from dispensaries in Georgia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Hawaii<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawaii now lets visitors from other U.S. states and territories use their home-state medical cannabis cards to get a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medmj.ehawaii.gov\/medmj\/welcome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60-day Out-of-State (OSP) card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This OSP card allows access to Hawaii dispensaries for medical cannabis purchases. Patients under 18 need a registered caregiver to accompany them when visiting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Louisiana<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Louisiana passed a law in August of 2022 that allows out-of-state medical marijuana patients to purchase their products in Louisiana while they are visiting. If you are a current patient with an out-of-state medical marijuana card visiting the state, you can search for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/dispensaries\/explore\/?state=louisiana&amp;sort=nearby&amp;listing_type=dispensaries\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Louisiana dispensary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> close to you and call them for specific details about how to use your current state\u2019s medical marijuana card to purchase medical cannabis in Louisiana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Maine<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Maine, adults who are at least 21 years old can possess and use marijuana. While retail sites were thought to be open to the public by 2018, the deadline seems to have been set back. Nonetheless, adults can still possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower and 5 grams of hashish or concentrates. Medical marijuana patients from certain states can use their patient status to purchase at any of Maine\u2019s medical dispensaries with proper identification. Maine will currently honor qualified patients from the following states:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alaska<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arizona<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arkansas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connecticut<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florida<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawaii<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illinois<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iowa<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maryland<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michigan<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevada<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Hampshire<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Jersey<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Mexico<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North Dakota<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oklahoma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oregon<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhode Island<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vermont<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington, DC.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More information about Maine\u2019s marijuana program can be found <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maine.gov\/dhhs\/mecdc\/public-health-systems\/mmm\/documents\/MMMP-Rules-144c122.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Michigan<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michigan\u2019s dispensaries can choose whether or not they will recognize an out-of-state medical marijuana card. However, Michigan legalized recreational cannabis in 2018. Adults who are at least 21 years old are legally permitted to possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower or 15 grams of concentrates. Dispensaries for medical marijuana are accessible throughout the state.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Nevada<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recreational marijuana became legal in Nevada in 2017, allowing adults 21 and older to purchase and consume cannabis for personal use. Previously, Nevada had legalized medical marijuana in 2000, and Nevada had medical marijuana reciprocity with all states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For recreational use, adults 21 years and older can legally possess up to 1 ounce (28 grams) of cannabis edibles, flower, or topicals and 3.5 grams of marijuana concentrates. Medical cannabis patients and caregivers can possess up to 2.5 ounces of edibles, flower, concentrates, or topicals per two-week period.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>New Hampshire<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In New Hampshire, medical marijuana patients from out of state are allowed to possess up to 2 ounces of usable cannabis but are not permitted to purchase from local dispensaries. The patient must also have the same <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/conditions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qualifying medical conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are listed in New Hampshire\u2019s medical marijuana program.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>New Mexico<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Mexico\u2019s Medical Cannabis Program currently allows medical cannabis patients from out of state to possess and purchase medical cannabis while in New Mexico. A patient with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmhealth.org\/publication\/view\/policy\/6969\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proof of authorization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a medical cannabis program outside of New Mexico (including any state, the District of Columbia, a territory or commonwealth of the U.S., or a New Mexico Indian nation, tribe, or pueblo) qualifies as a reciprocal patient.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>New Jersey<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicinal cannabis patients from other states may register for a nonrenewable, six-month MCP card for use during their stay in New Jersey. Out-of-state patients will need to consult with a registered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veriheal.com\/new-jersey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Jersey healthcare practitioner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who will enroll them in the state\u2019s registry. They will need to use the reference number and registry ID number they receive from the provider and a current copy of their registration in their home state\u2019s program to set up an account in the patient portal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Oklahoma<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oklahoma recognizes out-of-state cannabis cards. In the Sooner State, out-of-state medical marijuana patients are able to purchase from dispensaries after applying for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oklahoma.gov\/omma\/patients-caregivers\/patient-licenses.html#out-of-state-patient-licenses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temporary license<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The temporary license costs $100, takes about 2 weeks to process, and is valid for 30 days with the ability to be renewed. If\u00a0 approved, patients can possess:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to 8 ounces of marijuana at home<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to 3 ounces of marijuana on their person<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to 1 ounce of concentrated marijuana<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to 72 ounces of edible marijuana<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Rhode Island<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As long as patients bring their physical medical marijuana card with a government-issued ID card from the same state, visiting patients can have access to dispensaries in Rhode Island. Out-of-state patients are also permitted to possess the same amount of medical marijuana as in-state patients.
