How Does Ohio Medical Marijuana Card Renewal Work?<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Division of Cannabis Control (DCC) describes renewal on its<\/span> renewing patient registration page<\/span><\/a>. You complete two steps:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Get a new recommendation:<\/b> Ask your recommending physician for a new medical cannabis recommendation.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Renew in the registry:<\/b> Sign in to the Medical Marijuana Patient & Caregiver Registry, and select the Renew Card button.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Use the email address and password you chose when you first activated your account. The registry sends an automated email reminder before your registration expires, so keep the email on file current.<\/span><\/p>\n

    When Can You Renew, and What Happens If Your Card Expires?<\/b><\/h2>\n

    You can renew within 30 days before your registration expires. Ohio’s administrative code says a patient registration is valid for one year. It expires on the last day of the month in which it was issued. Starting the physician step before that date is the safest way to avoid a lapse. If you miss the reminder email, you can sign in to the registry directly.<\/span><\/p>\n

    An expired registration can still be renewed. You need a new recommendation first, and the Renew Card button then appears in your account. That applies whether only your registration expired or your recommendation expired too.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Expiration has real consequences. Rule 1301:18-10-01 of the<\/span> Ohio Administrative Code<\/span><\/a> requires registration before you purchase, possess, or administer medical cannabis. It says failure to renew results in automatic expiration of the registration card. It also requires patients to dispose of all medical cannabis within seven calendar days of expiration.     What Does Renewal Cost?<\/b><\/h2>\n

    Ohio’s state renewal fee is just $0.01, so your main cost is the physician visit. Here is how the two costs break down:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

    \n<\/span>Ohio charged patients $50 a year until March 2024. The Division of Cannabis Control cut the fee to $0.01 on March 4, 2024, according to its<\/span> patient fee announcement<\/span><\/a>. It then announced plans to eliminate the fee, but <\/span>Veriheal’s Ohio page<\/span><\/a> does list a $0.01 state fee, so check the registry for the current charge when you renew. Your physician sets the price of the recommendation visit, and that cost is separate from the state fee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Why Does Renewal Need a New Recommendation?<\/b><\/h2>\n

    Your registration rests on a physician’s recommendation. Under Ohio law, the recommending physician attests that a bona fide physician-patient relationship exists and that you have a qualifying medical condition. A physician who holds a<\/span>\u00a0certificate to recommend<\/span><\/a> issues the recommendation and records it in the registry.<\/span><\/p>\n

    If your original physician is no longer available, you can get the new recommendation from another Ohio physician who holds a certificate to recommend. The new physician reviews your qualifying condition and medical history, just as any recommending physician would.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Terminally ill patients follow a shorter cycle. A registration for a terminally ill patient is valid for six months. After that, the recommending physician must confirm that the patient’s condition continues to be a terminal illness.<\/span><\/p>\n

    How Can You Renew Online?<\/b><\/h2>\n
