Pennsylvania recognizes 24 serious medical conditions under the Medical Marijuana Act. Approved conditions include anxiety disorders, cancer, Crohn’s disease, epilepsy, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, neuropathies, opioid use disorder, Parkinson’s disease, PTSD, and severe chronic or intractable pain.

The list also covers ALS, autism, chronic hepatitis, Huntington’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, sickle cell anemia, Tourette syndrome, and terminal illness. A Pennsylvania-registered physician confirms whether your condition qualifies.

Becoming a patient is a three-step process. You first create a profile in the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Registry with your Pennsylvania driver’s license or state ID, and Veriheal then helps you book a telehealth appointment with a registered Pennsylvania physician.

Once the physician certifies you, you return to the registry to complete your application and pay the $50 state fee, which is waived for patients enrolled in Medicaid, PACE/PACENET, CHIP, SNAP, or WIC. The state then mails your card, typically within 2 to 4 weeks.

Along with a qualifying condition, a patient must prove Pennsylvania residency with a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license or state-issued ID. Pennsylvania charges $50 for annual registration, which is separate from your Veriheal recommendation fee.

A caregiver can buy, transport, and administer medical marijuana for a patient who needs help. Each patient may designate up to two caregivers, and every caregiver must register with the Department of Health.

A caregiver must be at least 21 years old unless the Department of Health approves otherwise, hold a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license or state ID, and pass a criminal background check. The department denies caregivers with a drug-related conviction in the past five years.

Pennsylvania limits patients to the supply their certifying physician recommends, and dispensaries may provide up to a 90-day supply at a time.

Smoking is not permitted, even for medical patients. Patients can use dry flower through vaporization, along with tinctures, oils, capsules, concentrates, and topicals.

Home cultivation is not permitted in Pennsylvania for patients or caregivers, so all medical marijuana must be purchased from a licensed dispensary.
