Reciprocity has finally arrived in Washington DC

If you often travel to Washington D.C., and have an out of state medical cannabis card, but weren’t allowed to access the dispensaries in the state, this is good news for you. At the end of 2016, the D.C council approved the Reciprocity Law, this gives out-of-state patients permission to purchase cannabis in the district. Usually, it is not permitted for patients to buy medical marijuana in a different place then where they reside. What is very strange is how we are all allowed to buy any type of medication that has been prescribed to us not only in the state that we are residents, but anywhere in the US.

Despite that the legislation was approved at the end of 2016, it has taken over a year to come into effect. Now, out-of-state patients are allowed to buy medical marijuana in DC. For folks that still need to get their medical cards, they can do so with Veriheal. The US has now 29 states that have legalized medical marijuana, and 8 of these states are legal for all types of use, medical and recreational.

Washington D.C has five dispensaries and the number of patients in December of 2017 was of 5,386, 3,203 being male patients and 2,183 female patients. There are also eight cultivation centers available in the district. The numbers of patients in the state that are part of the program are not even 1 percent of Washington’s D.C population, of which in total has around 690,000 residents, a number far more different than in California and Maine who in order contain 2 percent and 4 percent of the population holding a marijuana medical card. By this reciprocity law now being finally working, the number of people buying medical marijuana in the state will probably increase even more.

So, what can you do to buy medical marijuana with this reciprocity law now in place? If you have your medical marijuana card from another state, you can simply go to a DC dispensary of your choice, and purchase your medicine. This does not me that the dispensaries are open for recreational marijuana sales, you need to be a card holder. Here is the full list of out-of-state card holders that may purchase medical marijuana in DC. Neighboring states Maryland and Delaware are amongst those that may access DC’s dispensaries.
