Are you a fiend for desserts? If yes, it’s not your fault. The sweetness from desserts triggers your brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine to make you feel good. You know what else can make you feel good? Cannabis (and, in this case, THC). Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a cannabis compound that causes euphoric effects, boosting your mood and making you feel “high.”
Now imagine combining the pleasure of cannabis and desserts in a bite. That’s exactly what a space cake offers.
What’s a Space Cake and What’s In It?
A space cake or weed cake is simply a cake infused with cannabis or specific cannabis compounds like THC. This infused treat blends the rich, comforting sweetness of cake with THC’s euphoric effects, creating an experience that’s both delicious and uplifting.
Since the flavor isn’t what makes a space cake special, it can be any flavor you desire, including red velvet, chocolate, vanilla, lemon, or even carrot cake. In this guide, I’ll be sharing how to make a super-easy chocolate space cake at home that you can enjoy alone or with friends during parties, holidays, and so forth.
What You Need to Bake a Space Cake
Baking a space cake requires more than throwing weed into cake batter and tossing it into the oven. Before the actual baking, you must firstdecarb your weed and infuse it into a fat like butter or oil.
Decarboxylation, or decarbing, is the process of heating cannabis flower or a concentrate to activate the cannabinoids. Without decarboxylation, cannabis contains mostly inactive cannabinoids liketetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) andcannabidiolic acid (CBDA), which don’t produce psychoactive effects when consumed. Decarbing turns THCA into THC and CBDA into CBD.
Whether you’re making your space cake with flower or concentrate, you must decarb it first. The simplest way to decarb is to spread out your flower or concentrate on an oven tray. Next, bake it at a low temperature (around 220 to 240 degrees Fahrenheit) for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure even heating.
Once it cools, you can proceed toinfuse your butter or oil with the decarbed weed. How? Melt one stick of butter in a medium saucepan over low heat, then add ground, decarboxylated cannabis or concentrate.
Keep the temperature around 190 to 210 degrees Fahrenheit and let it simmer for 30 minutes without browning or frying the cannabis. Strain the mixture through a cheesecloth-lined mesh strainer, pressing what’s left to extract all the infused butter.
Remember: Without decarboxylation, the cannabis in your space cake is like John Wick without the dead puppy – It’s still potent, but it won’t punch.
Space Cake Recipe (Chocolate Edition)
In addition to your oil or melted butter infused with decarbed cannabis or concentrate, the other ingredients you’ll need for your space cake include:
½ cup cannabis-infused butter or oil
1 cup all-purpose flour
¾ cup sugar
¼ cup cocoa powder
½ cup chopped chocolate or chocolate chips
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
1 teaspoon baking powder
¼ cup milk
Here’s how to make your weed cake with these ingredients:
Preheat your oven: Set the oven to 350°F (175°C). While it’s heating up, grab a 9-inch cake pan. Use a bit of your cannabis-infused butter to grease the pan. then sprinkle some flour over it to prevent sticking. Shake out any excess.
Mix the dry ingredients: In a bowl, combine 1 cup flour, ¾ cup sugar, ¼ cup cocoa powder, 1 tsp baking powder, ¼ tsp salt, and the optional cinnamon and nutmeg. Give it a good stir so everything is evenly blended.
Mix the wet ingredients: In another bowl, beat together ½ cup cannabis-infused butter or oil, 2 eggs, ¼ cup milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
Combine wet and dry: Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until fully incorporated. Don’t overmix, or the cake might turn dense and heavy. Gentle folding is key to keeping it light and fluffy.
Pour and smooth: Pour half of the batter into your prepared pan, then sprinkle the ½ cup chopped chocolate or chocolate chips evenly on top. Pour the remaining batter over it and smooth the surface with a spatula so it’s nice and even.
Bake: Place the pan in the oven and bake for 25 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean (or with just a few moist crumbs). Once done, take it out of the oven and let it cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
We could stop here, but I like my cakes decadent, so let’s make a chocolaty spread to go on top. Here are two simple options:
Option 1: Chocolate Ganache
Heat ½ cup heavy cream until just about to boil.
Pour over ½ cup chopped chocolate and let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes.
Stir until smooth and glossy. Spread it over your cooled cake for a rich, decadent finish.
Option 2: Simple Cocoa Spread

In a small bowl, mix ¼ cup melted butter, a splash of milk, 2 to 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder, and ½ cup icing sugar.
Stir until smooth and spreadable. If you want it thicker, add more icing sugar. If you want it thinner, add milk. This is an easy, budget-friendly way to get a chocolaty topping without heavy cream or chocolate.
Now your space cake is ready to enjoy, BUT WARNING – As delicious as this cake looks, resist every urge to eat it all at once. If you made the cannabis butter with a highly potent strain or concentrate, you’ve likely made a super potent space cake. Eat only a small piece and wait at least two hours before eating another. This gives you enough time to feel the effects and gauge how potent your space cake is, preventing overconsumption and uncomfortable effects.

Why Make Your Own Space Cake
Making your own space cake isn’t just fun. It ensures the best flavor, potency, and experience. Other specific benefits include
Fresh: Unlike store-bought edibles, you’re not eating stale baked goods with cannabinoids that may have degraded. Freshly baked space cake preserves the potency and flavor of your cannabis. You also don’t have to worry about the edible containing potentially harmful preservatives.
Customization: You can bake the cake exactly to your liking, adjusting the moistness, sweetness, and even potency to create your perfect space cake experience.
No Surprises: You know exactly what’s in it. So, no hidden ingredients or unexpected effects.
Cost: Baking at home is usually more affordable than buying pre-made edibles. You get more servings and have more control over potency without paying extra for branding or packaging.
What to Know Before Eating Your Space Cake
Space cakes aren’t your average dessert—they’re more of an experience. Since your body absorbs THC from the cake through digestion, it can take anywhere from 30 to 120 minutes to feel the effects, with the high peaking for a few hours. So start with a small slice and be patient before going back for more.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container and keep them away from kids or pets, because they look just like regular cake. And remember, everyone’s tolerance is different, so what’s mild for one person might hit another hard.
FAQs
How much weed should I add to my space cake?
A safe starting point is 1 to 3 grams of flower per cake, especially for beginners. More experienced users may use 3 to 7 grams, depending on the flower or concentrate’s THC strength. Decarb and infuse the measured cannabis into oil or melted butter, then use that infusion to make your cake batter.
Will I get high from eating a space cake?
Whether you’ll get high depends on the potency and quantity of the flower or concentrate used to make the cake. How much of the cake you eat also determines the intensity of the effects. The high can feel stronger and last longer than smoking, so start with a small piece and give it time before having more.
How long before I feel the effects of eating a space cake?
You’ll usually feel the effects of a space cake within 30 to 120 minutes after eating it. This delay happens because THC has to undergo digestion and liver processing before it kicks in. The effects can peak 2 to 4 hours after eating and may last several hours. In extreme cases, especially with high doses, effects can last up to 12 hours or more.
How much space cake should I eat?
Start small, eating one small slice or a portion you know is low-dose. Wait at least two hours to feel the effects before eating more. Since homemade space cakes can be unpredictable, it’s better to start small and go slow than to eat too much andgreen out.
What happens if I eat too much weed cake?
The exact consequences of eating too much space cake depend on how much you ate and the strain used to make it. Overindulging typically triggers an intense high, anxiety, dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, or confusion. While generally not dangerous, it can be uncomfortable.
Can I drive after eating space cake?
We strongly advise against driving, operating heavy machinery, or engaging in any activities that require focus and coordination after eating a space cake. THC can impair your reaction time, judgment, and motor skills for several hours. Wait until the effects have completely worn off before doing anything potentially dangerous.
Can I make a space cake with CBD?
Yes! You can make a space cake with CBD instead of THC. CBD won’t get you high, but it can still provide relaxing and calming effects. Simply decarb your CBD flower or concentrate and infuse it into butter or oil, then use that infusion in your cake recipe like you would with THC.
Can I make a space cake with cake mix?
Yes, you can definitely make a space cake using a boxed cake mix! Just replace the regular butter or oil in the recipe with your cannabis-infused butter or oil. Follow the instructions on the mix for the other ingredients and baking time.
How potent is a space cake?
It depends on the strain added and how much cannabis or concentrate you use. Also, space cakes and other edibles can be stronger than smoking because the liverconverts THC into 11‑hydroxy‑THC, which has more intense and longer-lasting effects.
What should I do if I feel unwell or uncomfortable after eating a space cake?
If you feel unwell or uncomfortable after eating some space cake, stay calm and know it will pass. Drink water, eat a light snack, and rest in a comfortable, safe space. Deep breathing or listening to calming music can help reduce anxiety and make you feel more relaxed while waiting for the effects to wear off.
