How to Make CBD Lotion at Home the Proper Way

Cannabis topicals like CBD lotion are increasingly getting popular in the health and skincare industry, and it’s because of the benefits they provide to both the skin and body. They are helpful for quick and long-lasting relief from localized pain, inflammation, and breakouts (yes, even breakouts). They can also be used for skin conditions like dermatitis, psoriasis, and eczema.

If you want to harness CBD’s anti-aging, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and other enriching properties without breaking the bank, you’ve come to the right place. This article will show you how to make your CBD lotion at home. Let’s get started!

About CBD Lotions

CBD lotions are the lightest form of topicals but have a thick and whipped consistency. They contain about 75% of water, which gives them an ultra-moisturizing effect. They are a positive health choice if you have dry or damaged skin. Your skin will definitely thank you for taking advantage of the rejuvenating value of the lotion.

Some contain shea butter, which can help soften and soothe inflamed skin. Also, including aloe vera in them can help deal with sunburns and irritation. These lotions are easily absorbed into the skin and are an effective choice if you want to keep your body hydrated.

You have the freedom of versatility when you make your CBD lotion at home. Our recipe is a basic template; feel free to make the adjustments that fit your needs.

General CBD Lotion Ingredients

The five major ingredients required to make your CBD lotion include:

  1. An oil base: The oil base you use affects the texture of the resulting CBD lotion. Oils like sunflower, almond, and apricot oil give a light texture. Denser bases like jojoba, argon, and coconut oil give a denser consistency.
  2. CBD oil: The amount of CBD oil used determines the potency of the lotion. You can use a small quantity of the oil base to accommodate more CBD oil.
  3. An emulsifying agent like cocoa butter or shea butter
  4. Water: Mineral, distilled, or spring water can be used.
  5. Aloe vera gel

What You Need to Make CBD Lotion

  • ½ cup of coconut oil
  • 2 tsp of concentrated CBD oil or tincture
  • ½ cup of shea butter
  • About ¾ cup of spring water
  • ⅓ cup aloe vera gel
  • 2 tbsp vegetable glycerine (optional)
  • Fragrant essential oil (optional)

Other Materials Needed for CBD Lotion

  • Bain-marie (water bath)
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Spatula
  • Spoon
  • Blender or hand mixer
  • Glass container

Directions

To make CBD lotion, use the following steps:

  1. Fill the water bath with up to 2 inches of water. and heat it over low to medium heat.
  2. Place a heat-proof bowl in the water bath and add the shea butter and coconut oil.
  3. Melt the shea butter and the coconut oil until the mixture fully blends. Make sure to stir frequently to avoid scorching.
  4. Turn off the heat, and transfer the melted oil to a glass container to cool for about one hour. If necessary, use a spatula to scrape down the oil on the sides of the container.
  5. Add the melted oil, aloe vera gel, vegetable glycerine, CBD oil, and your desired amount of essential oil into a blender or hand mixer.
  6. Blend all the ingredients into the emulsion until there is a whipped consistency.
  7. Pour the resulting lotion into a tight-fitting jar for storage. When the lotion is cooled and hardened, it is ready for use.

Storage Tips

The lotion can last up to two weeks without refrigeration. Your CBD lotion can expire because it is prepared from organic ingredients. However, you can do the following to extend its shelf life:

  • Store in a cool and dry place like a pantry.
  • Do not open the jar unnecessarily to keep bacteria out.
  • Keep it away from heat.

You can preserve your CBD lotion for longer by adding vitamin E. You can also keep it for up to one month by refrigerating it in an air-tight container.

How to Solve Common Problems With Homemade CBD Lotion

Making your CBD lotion at home can come with challenges. Here are simple solutions to problems you can face while making the lotion:

  • Too thick: Add extra aloe vera gel in bits of one tablespoon and whip until you get the desired result.
  • Too thin: Melt more shea butter and coconut oil. After cooling, blend into the mixture in bits until you get a satisfactory consistency.
  • Not potent: Add more CBD oil.
  • Gritty texture: Whip the lotion for longer. You could also add more vegetable glycerine until the texture is smoother.

CBD lotion definitely comes with a lot of health benefits. Nothing is more satisfying than reaping these benefits while saving your hard-earned money. Many people who have made topical CBD products at home never returned to store products.
