How To Make DIY CBD-Infused Hair Products At Home

Hair care can get expensive, especially with all of the special ingredients available in today’s market. One often overlooked ingredient for soft and smooth hair is cannabidiol (CBD). Although there is a range of CBD hair products on the market, you may be interested in saving some bucks and making your own. We’ll show you how to make DIY CBD-infused hair products at home in this article.

Why Use CBD for Hair?

From stress and anxiety to aches and pains, CBD has a lot of potential uses. One seldom discussed use of the compound is for haircare. Since CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, many people consider using CBD haircare for inflammation-based scalp issues that lead to redness, bumps, itching, and even hair loss.

While we need more research to know whether CBD is a beneficial compound for hair health, we do have some evidence that suggests it may be helpful. One study found that CBD increased hair count in subjects with alopecia by more than 93% over a six month period. However, researchers cautioned that these findings need significantly more research to back up the claims. They also note that several other phytocannabinoids may actually cause hair loss.

Another study from 2014 found that CBD can normalize “pro-acne agent”-induced lipid synthesis of human sebocytes. Simply put, this study suggests that CBD may help to normalize excessive production of acne-causing oil, which could potentially suggest that CBD may help with oily scalp conditions. Like the above study, this has not been verified through additional research.

Despite a lack of clinical evidence showing CBD’s role in hair care, we do know that plenty of people find it to be a beneficial ingredient to include in their hair routines. Just look at the reviews of any CBD hair care products on the market, and you’ll likely see mentions of softer, shinier hair, and even some mentions of relief from itchy or flaky scalps.

If you’re curious to try for yourself, consider making a DIY CBD-infused hair care product. Here are some options:

DIY CBD-Infused Hair Products

We’re going to show you a few different ways to make CBD-infused hair care products so you can pick the right one for your needs. Be sure to always select high-quality CBD products that have been tested for purity and potency to ensure that you are putting safe ingredients in your hair and scalp.

CBD Scalp Scrub Recipe

This first recipe is for those looking for a nice scalp scrub to exfoliate and cleanse the top of your head.

Here’s what you need:

  • 2 tbsp raw sugar
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 3 drops of CBD oil

Mix the sugar, coconut oil, and apple cider vinegar together in a small bowl. Now, add the honey and CBD oil and mix thoroughly.

To use, start by wetting your hair with warm water. Make sure all areas of your scalp have been wet. Then take small dollops of the scalp scrub and apply it directly onto your scalp, avoiding the rest of your hair. Gently massage the scrub into your scalp with your fingertips, spending extra time in any troublesome areas. Then, rinse your scalp thoroughly with warm water and massage gently to remove all of the product.

If you have a sensitive scalp, be sure to test the scrub on a small portion of your scalp before diving into a full massage. If you feel any discomfort, rinse the product out immediately.

Once you’ve rinsed the scalp scrub out, you can wash and condition your hair like normal.

CBD Overnight Hair Serum

If you’re looking for a way to tame frizz and restore shine, you may want to try an overnight serum. With a combination of flaxseeds and CBD oil, this recipe is a must-try.

Here’s what you need:

  • 2 tbsp flaxseeds
  • 1 cup water
  • 3-7 drops of CBD oil, depending on your hair length and thickness

Boil the flaxseeds in the water for about 10 minutes until you see the mixture turn into a gel. Then, strain the contents and allow them to thoroughly cool.

Once the flaxseed gel has cooled, you can add your desired amount of CBD oil. Mix thoroughly and then apply the gel to damp hair, working it in through all of your hair from root to tips, avoiding the scalp.

Wrap your hair up in a silk wrap or bonnet and leave it overnight. In the morning, you can rinse your hair entirely with water to remove or shampoo and condition your hair to remove the contents of the gel.

CBD Leave-In Conditioner

Want something you can leave in your hair after a wash to keep it soft and shiny? Try this DIY CBD leave-in conditioner.

Here’s what you need:

  • ½ cup aloe vera juice
  • 1 tbsp preferred conditioner
  • ½ tbsp olive oil
  • 5-10 drops of CBD oil

Add all of the ingredients to a spray bottle and shake thoroughly. Once well-mixed, you can spray this on your damp hair and brush gently to mix it in.

We recommend halving the recipe if you don’t plan to use it regularly, as the aloe vera juice can spoil quickly. Be sure to always store this in the refrigerator to avoid spoiling.

Bonus Recipe: Organic CBD Conditioner

We published a DIY CBD hair conditioner recipe years back, and it’s still relevant today. Complete with blended avocado, honey, yogurt, and CBD oil, it’s a surefire way to keep your hair soft and smooth.

Just remember that while CBD is generally safe with therapeutic benefits, it’s not proven to provide any substantial hair care benefits. We do have some preliminary research and lots of anecdotal evidence to suggest it can help with haircare, though.

Because these recipes are DIY and not one-size-fits-all, be prepared for a bit of trial and error before you find the exact recipe that works for your hair type.
