These 7 Cannabis Strains Are Named After Iconic Women

Cannabis is one of the very few plants that has genders with identifiable differences between the male and female versions of the plant. Botanically, plants that are male or female are known as ‘dioecious’ plants. These kinds of plants also include ginkgo and kiwi alongside cannabis. In many cases, male versions of dioecious are planted in urban areas in order to avoid the mess of flowers and fruits. However, in the case of cannabis, females are preferably chosen to plant. The idea of having male and female plants can be quite curious to many people and there can be variations found throughout the entire plant kingdom. In the dioecious plants, the male counterparts are often associated with the production of pollen…which can be considered as the botanical version of sperm. While the female plant is often associated with the production of flowers or product through their ovules (ovaries equivalent). 

The Differences Between Male and Female Cannabis Plants

Since cannabis is a dioecious plant, it means that their gender is either female or male. The female plants are used for consumption and try to produce more and more resin in order to attract male plants for pollination. Male plants have pollen sacs and when they open, it pollinates the female plants, which causes the female to produce seeds. By using a strain of a male and a strain of the female, breeders are able to cross strains to make new ones. 

However, in order to get the most of your growth for consumption, it is best to ensure that there are no males near to your females. When a female plant is kept from a male plant, it is called sinsemilla. If a female is introduced to a male plant, it will put most of its energy into producing seeds instead of producing more resin and buds, which we want strong and dense for high-quality products. 

Even though the world prefers to plant and consume the female cannabis plant, many of the available strains are not named after many females (real or fictional). All over the world, women are being celebrated for influence, success and individuality during the various women’s’ days and months. In South Africa, the entirety of August is dedicated to celebrating women as well as the diversity and beauty which surrounds them. • Nina Limone

Nina Simone is a legendary musician and activist who has been made the name of a strain crossed between Super Lemon Haze and Rebel God Smoke. The strain is reported to be sativa-dominant which has strong notes of lemon and pine. Nina was a civil rights activist who received an honorary degree in music days before she died. She was denied admissions to the same university who awarded the honorary degree, due to the racial discrimination she experienced while being alive between 1954 and 2003. 

• Ms. Universe

The 2015 Australian candidate for Miss Universe, Monika Radulovic was eliminated after a round of questioning where she spoke out in support of cannabis legalization due to its medicinal cannabis. She was eliminated because of her support. Not to worry, she won the hearts of the cannabis community and scored a sativa-dominant strains named after her. This strain reportedly offers a relief from pain and stress while scents of pineapple, vanilla, and caramel. 

• Wonder Woman

Named after a DC comic book icon, the Wonder Woman strain is known for the productivity that comes as a result. The lineage of this strain is quite interesting as it’s father strain, called Top 44, was originally manipulated with gibberellic acid in order to pollinate the female strain, called Ice. It’s reported to be sweet but earthy and makes for a great daytime smoke. 

• Margaret Cho-G

Margaret Cho is an American comedian from San Francisco and just like her, the strain can be found there too. This hybrid strain is said to be a cut of the infamous OG Kush and comes with a sweet lemon, woody pine and sour diesel like flavor. It’s been reported that this strain can have powerful giggling effects over the consumer. Margaret Cho once said “the perfect setting with the perfect weed is a dream come true.”

• Khaleesi Kush

This strain is for all the die-hard Game of Thrones fans in the cannabis community. Named after one of the main characters, Daenerys Targaryen, the mother of dragons, this strain is indica-dominant and is sweet and stems from the crossing of Pakistani Kush and Bubblegum strains. This strain is apparently in high demand too. 

• Connie Chung

Like Khaleesi’s strain, this one is also an indica dominant strain and is named after journalist Connie Chung. The legendary news reporter and journalist’s strain was made by crossing LA Flavour and G13 Haze. This strain is known for its hazy head high which can lead you down the road of unwinding and relaxing. 

• Markle’s Sparkle

British Royal, Meghan Markle, has turned her wedding sparkle into a trend known as the “Markle’s Sparkle”. More than that, her sparkle even scored the name of a new strain which is a cross of Blue City Diesel, Blueberry Northern Lights and apparently a secret strain… The strain is said to have a very sweet taste with a hint of blueberry and some other fresh fruity flavor. The Markle’s Sparkle is a sativa hybrid which is reported to leave you feeling happy and tingling from being uplifted.
