CBD Beauty: What Does the Latest Research Have to Say?

Cannabis products have come a long way in the last decade, especially when you compare the variety of products and the quality of the bud itself. Now, cannabidiol (CBD) based beauty products can be found in mainstream retailers such as Sephora, Boots, and a variety of online platforms. From 2019, CBD has quickly become a sought-after beauty product ingredient. Hopefully, by having a look at the cannabidiol beauty trends and the latest research, we’d have an indication of where the cannabis beauty market is headed.

Cosmetics Design Europe spoke to a French cannabis company called Ho Karan, that specializes in cannabis-based, natural, and holistic beauty products.  The CEO and founder, Laure Bouguen stated that the potential of cannabis for beauty products stretches far beyond that of the cannabidiol (CBD) compound found in cannabis and that she plans on making use of the entire plant in order to bring consumers anti-stress products. Yet, most of the cannabis incorporation in beauty products center around CBD.

CBD skincare market is estimated to be worth $1.7 Billion by 2025 according to Grand View Research Inc. Which makes sense when you consider the amount of CBD beauty products and brands popping up and expanding. For example, the CBD skincare brand known as Kuida expanded from Colombia into the American and European markets towards the end of 2019. While CBD skincare is trending globally, the Latin American products seemed to have paved the way due to the more flexible regulatory approach to cannabis taken in those countries such as Colombia.

While beauty products that are therapeutic and skin-based are most likely to be the driving force in the CBD beauty industry, CBD hair care is picking up wind with products emphasizing the natural formulations in their products. However, the research that would be needed to support claims, of what CBD can do for hair, remains scarce.

What are the Trending CBD Beauty Products?

  • CBD Facials
  • CBD Face Serum
  • CBD Body and Face Creams
  • CBD Cleansing Bars
  • CBD Based Make-up

Although CBD make-up has made the list of trending products, consumers seem to be more attracted to the CBD beauty products aimed at providing care and health benefits over the beauty products used for cosmetics. The CBD products for skincare also include sunscreen, lip care, scrub, and salve.

Why CBD is Beneficial for Your Skin

It appears that cannabidiol is frequently chosen as the cannabis compound for beauty due to:

  • Anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Oil-balancing effects which then fights against acne due to the reduction of sebum
  • Anti-oxidizing properties.

Ildi Pekar, the founder of her own skincare line, explained that “cannabidiol offers some serious antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits which can be beneficial in treating skin concerns like inflammation, dryness and free radical damage”.

What are the Most Recent Studies?

The cannabis compound CBD was investigated at a molecular level to determine its effects on epidermal (skin) cells. Results from this study displayed that CBD has a strong basis for use as an effective topical ointment in the treatment of various skin diseases and conditions including dermatitis. Yet in the discussion of the study, the researchers explain that the “mechanism of action of CBD on different skin cell types is not understood”. Another recent study had a look at whether cannabis compounds can inhibit skin inflammation and assist with wound injury.  The study explains that skin inflammatory diseases can result from events such as abnormal expressions of inflammatory mediators. Results displayed cannabis extracts can be used as anti-inflammatory agents to alleviate skin diseases and conditions.

Cannabis-based products containing CBD can either be full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, or isolate. Full-spectrum CBD beauty products contain all the cannabis compounds including (tetrahydrocannabinol) THC, such as the beauty products offered by Ho Karan. Broad-spectrum CBD products contain a range of the compounds but exclude THC, while CBD isolates products merely contain CBD. Cannabis compounds include cannabinoids (like THC and CBD), terpenes, and flavonoids. All the cannabis compounds offer their own respective benefits but work best in its entourage effect. Although CBD beauty products are trending, it would seem that making use of full- and broad- spectrum cannabis content will offer up the best benefits for consumers.

The future of the CBD beauty market is heavily dependent on the regulatory authorities, which is currently being established, revised, or implemented around the world. This would be good news, however, differences in regulations between countries and even states or provinces will make it challenging for beauty product giants to stock shelves with CBD products worldwide.

It is important to choose your CBD beauty products carefully due to the fact that the majority of the products contain inaccurate labels. According to a 2017 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), over 60% of the CBD products are mislabeled.  This means that consumers should look towards researched, trusted, and safe brands in order to ensure that the CBD beauty product is most beneficial for the buyer.
