Big Tech Softens Cannabis Content Policies

Twitter has officially accepted billionaire Elon Musk’s offer to buy the company. Elon’s purchase comes in at $44 billion, or approximately $52.40 a share.
In a statement released along with the purchase announcement, Elon stated his intentions to “make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans.”
Musk’s purchase comes after years of the billionaire publicly airing his discontent at Twitter’s content moderation policies. As a self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist,” it was Musk’s belief that Twitter was failing its duty to serve as a “platform for free speech around the world.”
Given Musk’s views on social media and free speech, many are expecting Twitter’s rules and moderation to be drastically loosened. How will this affect cannabis content, which often struggles on countless other social media platforms? Let’s take a look.
Musk, to his credit, has never been one to shy away from cannabis culture and all it entails. Musk’s infamous 2020 appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience culminated in a viral photo of the billionaire smoking weed. In 2018, Musk announced his plan to sell Tesla stock at $420. A Musk-run Twitter would clearly have no issue with cannabis content. But does that differ much from Twitter’s current stance on cannabis content moderation?
Twitter, to its credit, is one of the more lenient social media platforms when it comes to cannabis content. Posting about cannabis on TikTok or Instagram, for example, will quickly result in the post being taken down and the user being banned. Twitter, meanwhile, allows most cannabis content and only really cracks down on particularly harmful rhetoric.
Given Twitter’s already lax stance on cannabis content, there will most likely not be many changes coming to its moderation—even with Musk at the helm. However, that does not mean we won’t see moderation changes when it comes to other types of content.
What changes do think will come to Twitter with Musk now in charge? Let us know in the comments!
