History of 4/20
Curious about the history behind 4/20? Us too! Although the way that 4/20 came to be cannot be confirmed 100%, with different popular theories, one seems to reign supreme.
The consensus is that it began in 1971 with a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in California who were in search of a specific weed patch they found out about through a friend’s brother. At 4:20 PM, they would meet up to smoke and search for the weed patch.
The code name “420” lived on, and it ultimately became the holiday that we celebrate today!
Legal Status of Cannabis in Los Angeles
Now, let’s get into the legal status of cannabis in Los Angeles.
Luckily, due to the legal status of cannabis, Los Angeles is a relatively great place to be on 4/20. According to the LA County Public Health website, cannabis is legal both for medicinal and recreational use, including buying and possessing it. Specifically, “If you are 21 or older, you can buy and possess up to one ounce (28.5 grams) of cannabis and up to eight grams of concentrated cannabis.” Additionally, there are licenses required to sell cannabis.
Cannabis is legal for use on private property, but not on public property. Overall, this means that you are free to smoke on your property or on other private property that allows it.
