How to Renew Your New Jersey Medical Marijuana Card

You can renew your New Jersey medical marijuana card entirely online through the state’s patient portal. Your card is valid for two years, and the state sends a reminder 60 days before it expires. When you renew, you can choose a free digital card or a $10 physical card.

This guide walks you through when to start, each step in the portal, and what renewal costs. You’ll also learn what to do if your card has already expired, so you can keep your access to medical cannabis without a gap.

When Should You Renew Your New Jersey Card?

The Medicinal Cannabis Program sends you a renewal reminder 60 days before your card expires, and that’s your cue to start. According to the program page and the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission’s (CRC) renewal instructions, you can renew any time from that point on.

It pays to start right away. New patients can buy from a medical dispensary while their registration is under review, but renewing patients can’t, according to the CRC’s patient FAQs. Renewing early gives you time to sort out any document issues before your current card runs out. To plan your timing, read Veriheal’s guide on how long it takes to get a medical card.

How Do You Renew Your Card in the Patient Portal?

The whole renewal happens online in the patient portal. Before you begin, take a minute to check your authorization. You’ll find your health care practitioner’s authorization statement and its status in the portal, and only your provider can make changes to it. The CRC’s renewal instructions don’t say whether you need a new authorization to renew, so if yours has ended, call the Patient Services Unit before you go further.

When everything looks current, follow these steps from the renewal instructions and the CRC’s adult patient user guide:

  1. Open the renewal form: Sign in, select Patient, then ID Card Renewal, and select Continue after reading the instructions.
  2. Choose your card type: Keep the free digital card, or opt for a physical card for $10.
  3. Confirm your address: Review the address on file, update anything that changed, and select Save & Confirm Address.
  4. Upload your documents: Attach them in the Documents section, then select Upload Documents. If your New Jersey government-issued ID doesn’t show your current address, select “I don’t have a current ID” and attach two proofs of residency from different sources.
  5. Add or renew a caregiver: If you have one, select the Caregiver tab before you submit.
  6. Submit your renewal: Select Submit Renewal Request. You can’t make changes after you submit, so review everything first.
  7. Track your status: Log in to the portal to check where your renewal stands.

Renewal also requires a current photo, which the patient FAQs say must be taken within 30 days of submitting. If you’ve moved and your card is due for renewal, update your address through the renewal itself. The portal won’t accept a separate address change request at that point.

What If You Haven’t Set Up a Portal Account?

You need a username and password to sign in. If you haven’t created an account yet, the CRC’s Existing Patients page says you’ll need the registry ID number and reference number from your health care provider.

Need help? Call the Patient Services Unit at (609) 292-0424, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or email Medcannabis@crc.nj.gov. Program rules can change, so confirm current requirements with the CRC before you submit.

Renewing With a Caregiver

You can have up to two caregivers if your condition leaves you physically unable to visit a dispensary. Caregivers renew their own ID cards through the portal, with the same choice of a free digital card or a $10 physical card.

If you’re adding a new caregiver who isn’t an immediate family member, they’ll need a fingerprint background check. The CRC says those results can take two to three weeks, so start early if you plan to add someone during your renewal.

What Does Renewal Cost?

Renewing your state card costs $0 if you choose a digital card. A physical card costs $10, paid to the state, and both are valid for two years. Here’s how the two options compare:

Digital ID card Physical ID card
State fee $0 $10
How you get it In your patient portal, where you can save it to your phone or print the PDF Printed and mailed to you
Validity Two years Two years
How to request it Choose it during renewal Choose it during renewal

If you have a physical card now, you can switch to the free digital card when you renew. Any fee your health care provider charges for an evaluation is separate from the state fee. To see what you keep by staying current, read Veriheal’s guide on the benefits of a medical marijuana card.

What If Your Card Has Already Expired?

The CRC’s renewal instructions say that if you choose to stay in the program, you’ll need to register for a new card once your current one expires. They don’t describe a grace period or a separate process for expired cards. You need your ID card to buy from a dispensary’s medical menu. Call the Patient Services Unit at (609) 292-0424 to confirm your next steps.

Each state sets its own renewal rules. If you also use a card in another state, read Veriheal’s guide to medical marijuana card state-by-state laws.

Should You Worry About Privacy When You Renew?

The CRC says it takes patient privacy seriously. It doesn’t share your enrollment information without your written consent, and that includes requests from employers who want to verify you’re a patient. If you do want to share your records, you can give consent through a Release of Records Form in the patient portal. To learn more about what others can see, read Veriheal’s guide on whether a medical cannabis card shows up on a background check.

Should You Talk to a Lawyer First If You Own Firearms?

If you own firearms, talk with a lawyer before you renew your New Jersey medical marijuana card. The CRC says firearms questions are outside its purview and directs patients to their local police department. Federal law also changed in 2026, but not everything changed. Here’s what’s different now:

  • Schedule III: State-licensed medical marijuana moved to Schedule III in April 2026, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Recreational cannabis stays Schedule I.
  • Supreme Court ruling: The Court decided United States v. Hemani on June 18, 2026. It held unanimously that prosecuting someone under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(3) for marijuana use alone violates the Second Amendment.
  • ATF guidance: The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) rescinded its 2011 open letter. That letter told dealers a medical marijuana card was grounds to refuse a sale.

Here’s what didn’t change:

  • The law: Section 922(g)(3) is still federal law.
  • The form: ATF Form 4473 is unchanged, and the ATF hasn’t issued replacement guidance. You must still answer its drug-use question truthfully.

Real federal risk remains, so a lawyer can tell you how these rules apply to you. For more detail, read Veriheal’s guide on medical cannabis patients and gun rights.

How Can Veriheal Help You Renew in New Jersey?

If you need a new authorization, you may not have to visit an office. New Jersey law lets practitioners continue authorizing patients through telehealth when an in-person visit isn’t required under the standard of care. Your provider can still ask for an in-office visit if your care calls for one.

Veriheal connects you with a New Jersey health care provider for an online video evaluation. Every evaluation comes with a “get approved or your money back” policy, and you can split the fee into interest-free installments. To learn how online visits work, read Veriheal’s guide on telemedicine for medical cannabis.

Book your New Jersey evaluation with Veriheal as soon as your renewal reminder arrives.
