How Much Does a New Jersey Medical Marijuana Card Cost?

How Much Does a New Jersey Medical Marijuana Card Cost?

Your New Jersey medical marijuana card can cost as little as $199 when you get evaluated through Veriheal. The state’s digital card is free, and a physical card costs $10. That brings your total to $199 with a digital card or $209 with a physical one, and either card is valid for two years.

Below, you’ll find each cost, who receives each payment, and when you pay it. You’ll also see how much a New Jersey medical marijuana card can save you at the dispensary, so you can see whether it pays for itself.

What Does a New Jersey Medical Marijuana Card Cost?

Two separate costs make up your total, and you need both to enroll. The first is your evaluation with a participating health care provider. The second is the state card fee, which goes to the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC).

The state card is where New Jersey stands out. The Medicinal Cannabis Program offers free digital ID cards to new and renewing patients, while a physical card costs $10. Both cards are valid for two years. These fees are lower than they used to be, since the CRC cut the registration fee to $10 in December 2023 and then added free digital cards. If you see a $50 state fee quoted elsewhere, that figure predates the cut.

How Do the Costs Break Down?

Each payment goes to a different recipient at a different stage. Here’s every charge you’re likely to see when you first enroll:

Cost Amount Who receives it When you pay
Veriheal evaluation $199 Veriheal Before you register with the state
Digital state card $0 No charge During registration
Physical state card $10 State of New Jersey During registration, if you want one
Total with a digital card $199
Total with a physical card $209

The state charges nothing for a digital card. The $10 physical card is the only state charge, and you pay it to the state during registration, not to Veriheal.

A few other details are worth knowing before you budget:

  • Renewal: Renewing your state card follows the same pricing. The digital card is free, and the physical card costs $10.
  • Reduced fees: New Jersey no longer runs a separate reduced-fee card. The CRC’s December 2023 changes replaced the old reduced fee with a flat $10 physical card for everyone, and the digital card is free for every patient.
  • Fee changes: Fee schedules can change. Confirm current figures with the CRC before you submit your application.

What Do You Pay Before You Can Register?

You pay for your evaluation before you can register with the state. Here’s how the two steps fit together:

  1. Get evaluated by a participating health care provider: This is your first step, and Veriheal’s evaluation costs $199. If you qualify, your provider gives you an Authorizing Healthcare Practitioner Statement with a reference ID number and a registry ID number.
  2. Register with the state: The state registration page says you need both ID numbers to set up your patient portal account. From there, you choose a dispensary and upload proof of New Jersey residency and a recent photo. You also pick your card type and pay the state card fee if you choose a physical card.

Is a New Jersey Medical Card Worth the Cost?

A medical card can lower what you spend on cannabis. Since July 1, 2022, enrolled patients pay no state sales tax on medicinal cannabis. Adult-use purchases carry New Jersey’s 6.625% state sales tax. Towns may add a local tax of up to 2%, and the CRC notes that this municipal tax can apply to medicinal purchases too.

Your savings depend on how much you buy. Here’s what avoiding the 6.625% state sales tax is worth at three spending levels:

Monthly spend Tax saved per month Tax saved over two years Months to recover the $199 evaluation
$50 $3.31 $79.50 About 60
$150 $9.94 $238.50 About 20
$300 $19.88 $477.00 About 10

At $150 a month, the tax savings alone cover the $199 evaluation within your card’s two-year term. At $50 a month, they don’t, so the other benefits below carry more weight. For a closer look, read Veriheal’s guide on medical versus recreational cannabis taxes.

Taxes aren’t the only difference. The CRC’s patient FAQs list several other patient benefits:

  • Higher purchase limits: Patients can buy up to 85 grams (3 ounces) every 30 days, with the exact amount set by their provider. Adult-use customers can buy 28.35 grams (1 ounce) in a single transaction.
  • Priority supply: Medicinal cannabis is prioritized over adult-use cannabis. Dispensaries that sell it must also give patients priority service.
  • Provider oversight: A health care provider oversees your treatment and recommends how much to use.

To see what else a card offers, read Veriheal’s guide on the benefits of a medical marijuana card.

How Do You Choose Between a Digital and a Physical Card?

Choose the digital card if you want the lowest cost. It’s free, and it lives in your patient portal, where you can save a picture of it to your phone or print the PDF. Choose the physical card if you’d rather carry a card in your wallet. To see what cards typically include, read Veriheal’s guide on what a medical marijuana card looks like.

Your card lasts two years either way. You can start renewal up to 60 days before it expires, according to the CRC’s patient FAQs. If you have a physical card now, you can switch to a free digital card when you renew.

What Does Insurance Cover?

Health insurance won’t pay for your medicinal cannabis in New Jersey. According to the CRC, no health plan in the state covers medicinal cannabis treatment, including Medicaid. The reason traces back to federal law, where the cannabis plant isn’t a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drug. State-licensed medical marijuana moved to Schedule III in April 2026, but that didn’t make it FDA-approved, so coverage stayed the same. To learn more, read Veriheal’s guide on whether medical marijuana is covered by insurance.

How Long Does It Take to Get Your Card?

The CRC doesn’t publish a standard processing time for new cards. You can track your application status in the patient portal, and the CRC expedites registration only for patients who are terminally ill. You may not need to wait for the card to start shopping, though. Once you’ve started registration, new patients can buy from a medical dispensary with a government-issued ID while their registration is under review.

For the general timeline, read Veriheal’s guide on how long it takes to get a medical card. To follow the process step by step, see how to get your medical marijuana card online.

Can You Use Your Card in Other States?

Your New Jersey card is issued for New Jersey’s program, and the CRC tells patients not to carry medicinal cannabis across state lines. Other states set their own rules for visiting patients. Veriheal tracks them in its guides on medical marijuana card state-by-state updates and on states that allow out-of-state patients to buy medical marijuana.

New Jersey also welcomes visiting patients for short stays. A patient from another state can get a nonrenewable, six-month New Jersey card after a registered New Jersey practitioner enrolls them. They also need a current copy of their home state’s registration. The temporary card includes no state sales tax and access to patient-only lines and hours, according to the CRC.

Should You Talk to a Lawyer First If You Own Firearms?

If you own firearms, talk with a lawyer before you enroll in New Jersey’s Medicinal Cannabis Program. The CRC says firearms questions are outside its purview and directs patients to their local police department. Federal law also changed in 2026, but not everything changed. Here’s what’s different now:

  • Schedule III: State-licensed medical marijuana moved to Schedule III in April 2026, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Recreational cannabis stays Schedule I.
  • Supreme Court ruling: The Court decided United States v. Hemani on June 18, 2026. It held unanimously that prosecuting someone under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(3) for marijuana use alone violates the Second Amendment.
  • ATF guidance: The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) rescinded its 2011 open letter. That letter told dealers a medical marijuana card was grounds to refuse a sale.

Here’s what didn’t change:

  • The law: Section 922(g)(3) is still federal law.
  • The form: ATF Form 4473 is unchanged, and the ATF hasn’t issued replacement guidance. You must still answer its drug-use question truthfully.

Real federal risk remains, so a lawyer can tell you how these rules apply to you. For more detail, read Veriheal’s guide on medical cannabis patients and gun rights.

How Can Veriheal Help You Get a New Jersey Card?

Veriheal connects you with a New Jersey health care provider for an online video evaluation. The evaluation costs $199, and you can split the fee into interest-free installments. Every evaluation also comes with a “get approved or your money back” policy. Once you’re approved, you register with the state and choose a free digital card or a $10 physical card.
