Medical Cannabis Card in Newark

Getting a medical cannabis card in Newark works the same way as anywhere else in New Jersey. The state’s Medicinal Cannabis Program issues the card. A digital card is free, a physical card costs $10, and both last two years.

This guide covers the steps, the cost, how to choose a dispensary, and what a card saves you. You’ll finish knowing how to start from home and what to expect along the way.

How Do You Get a Medical Cannabis Card in Newark?

You must be a New Jersey resident and keep a bona fide relationship with a healthcare provider, according to the program overview. Follow these steps:

  1. See a provider: Meet with a participating healthcare provider, who gives you an Authorizing Healthcare Practitioner Statement with a reference ID number and a registry ID number.
  2. Create your account: Sign up in the patient portal with those two numbers.
  3. Upload your documents: Add your documents and photo, and name the Alternative Treatment Center (ATC) where you plan to buy.
  4. Choose your card: Pick a free digital card or a $10 physical card.

The state registration page lists the documents. Bring a current New Jersey government-issued ID, or two proofs of residency from the last 90 days. A photo taken within the last 60 days is also required. Read Veriheal’s guide on how to get your medical marijuana card online.

What Does a Card Cost in Newark?

Your costs come from two places: the state and your provider. Here is how they break down:

Item Cost
Digital card (state) $0
Physical card (state) $10
Provider evaluation Set by your provider

Both state cards are valid for two years, according to the program overview. Your provider’s evaluation is a separate cost. At Veriheal, the evaluation is $199, and you can split it into interest-free installments. Add the state fee, and your total is $199 with a free digital card or $209 with a $10 physical card. Read Veriheal’s guide on how long it takes to get a medical card.

How Do You Choose a Dispensary Near Newark?

New Jersey calls licensed medicinal dispensaries Alternative Treatment Centers. The state’s Find an Alternative Treatment Center page shows the centers near you. You name your ATC during registration, and you can change it in the patient portal at any time. The state says medical and recreational dispensaries have the option to offer delivery, so ask each center whether it delivers to your address.

What Does a Card Save You?

Adults 21 and older can buy cannabis in New Jersey without a medical card, according to the state’s adult-use announcement. A card still helps. Enrolled patients pay no state sales tax on medicinal cannabis, while adult-use purchases carry the state sales and use tax. Patients can also receive orders of up to 85 grams for every 30-day period.

Read Veriheal’s guides on medical versus recreational cannabis taxes and the benefits of a medical marijuana card.

What Should You Know About Work and Privacy?

The state says general cannabis use cannot be a determining factor for hiring or firing someone, but employers can keep a drug-free workplace. The Cannabis Regulatory Commission’s workplace page calls medical cannabis exceptions complex. For disclosure advice, read whether to tell your employer about your medical card.

To learn who can see your card, read Veriheal’s guide on whether a medical cannabis card shows up on a background check. For other states, read Veriheal’s guide to medical marijuana card state-by-state laws.

Should You Talk to a Licensed Attorney First If You Own Firearms?

A medical card can still carry federal firearms risk, even though the rules shifted in 2026. Here is how the year unfolded:

  • April 28, 2026: State-licensed medical marijuana moved from Schedule I to Schedule III, per the Federal Register rule. Marijuana outside a state medical license or a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved product stays in Schedule I.
  • June 18, 2026: The Supreme Court held in United States v. Hemani that a prosecution under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(3) based solely on marijuana use was inconsistent with the Second Amendment. The judgment was unanimous, and the Court called its decision narrow.
  • ATF letter: The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) rescinded its 2011 open letter, which told dealers a medical card was grounds to refuse a sale.

Not everything changed, though. Section 922(g)(3) remains federal law, and ATF Form 4473 is unchanged, so you must still answer its drug-use question truthfully. The ATF has issued no replacement guidance, so real federal risk persists. A licensed attorney can explain how these rules apply to you.
