Nebraska advocates are working to get medical cannabis on the ballot, THC seltzers are building buzz in Tennessee, and researchers tested CBD oil preservatives.
Let’s dive into this week’s canna-news!
Nebraska is once again attempting to make legal medical cannabis a reality. The effort is being led by the group Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana (NMM). The group is looking to gather the 200,000 signatures required to put a medical cannabis legalization initiative on the state’s 2024 ballot.
NMM previously succeeded in putting a medical cannabis initiative on Nebraska’s 2020 ballot. Unfortunately, Nebraska’s Supreme Court deemed the initiative illegal for violating the state’s “single subject” rule.
To get around this, the NMM’s new effort split the 2020 initiative into two separate initiatives. The first focuses on creating the regulatory framework needed to launch the medical cannabis industry. The second looks to provide protections for caregivers.
Nebraska’s former Gov. Pete Ricketts has voiced his opposition to the re-worked initiative. Earlier this year, Ricketts made claims that cannabis “is a dangerous drug that will impact our kids.” Gov. Ricketts went as far as to say that “if you legalize marijuana, you’re gonna kill your kids.”
However, Nebraska’s new governor is not 100% on board with medical cannabis legalization either—he has stated that FDA approval of cannabis would change his mind.
Do you think Nebraska will finally be able to get over the hump and legalize medical cannabis? Let us know in the comments!
Nashville is renowned for its electric nightlife and legendary music scene. If recent trends are any indication, however, Music City may soon also be known for its THC-infused beverages.
Cannabis company Crescent 9 launched its THC-infused seltzers at a sold-out Hozier show in Nashville earlier this month. The seltzers contain 6 milligrams of delta-9 THC, 3 milligrams of CBD, and a hint of caffeine. The beverages were an immediate hit, with the concert crowds building early buzz around the city.
Nashville’s quick embrace of these cannabis beverages should come as no surprise. A 2019 survey revealed that 94% of residents supported some form of cannabis legalization. While this immense support hasn’t resulted in legislative action yet, Crescent 9 seltzers’ early popularity should signal that change may be closer than most think.
A recent study conducted at the University of South Florida explored CBD oil’s potential to be used as a fruit preservative.
To test this, researchers applied CBD oil to freshly harvested fruit and stored it at different temperatures. The fruit-CBD oil mixtures were left to sit for 16 days. After the waiting period, researchers tested the preservative blend to ensure it was safe for consumption.
Researchers found that the treated fruit maintained its visual quality and had a lower microbial load compared to untreated fruit. Further, CBD oil was successful in inhibiting the growth of yeasts and molds.
