Hemp-hemp-hooray! It seems that hemp has gained the attention of some political leaders prompting for reform of current government laws pertaining to this very widely misunderstood plant. Some lawmakers are listening to the public and relaying that message to the appropriate channels. Thanks to these individuals and those who have helped educate and support them, a much-needed change is in the works. State Representatives Morgan Griffith (R-VA) and Kurt Schrader (D-OR) recently introduced bipartisan legislation prompting for a shift in current government laws regarding CBD. If passed, the new congressional bill titled “Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act of 2020, “would allow cannabidiol (CBD) and other hemp-derived compounds to be legally sold and marketed as dietary supplements.”
Representative Griffith stated the following regarding his support of the bill;
“Hemp was historically an important crop for Virginia farmers, and dietary supplements made from it do not possess dangerous addictive qualities. Nevertheless, the current state of regulation creates confusion about its legal uses. I joined this bipartisan bill to provide certainty for hemp farmers that their crop may find legal uses.”
Current laws do not permit CBD to be sold or marketed as a dietary supplement. This isn’t only hurting new businesses, but it is also hurting hemp farmers and the world itself. At a time when viruses are wreaking havoc, natural disasters seem to be in abundance, and the environment appears to be teeter-tottering on the verge of a climate shift, it would seem imperative that we as a civilized and educated race would do all we could to help preserve the future, wouldn’t it? Changing draconian laws such as the ones regarding hemp is a great way to help ensure this. Allowing for hemp-derived compounds such as CBD and others to marketed and sold as dietary supplements is a game-changer.
“Enabling CBD to be lawfully marketed as dietary supplements and mandating that manufacturers comply with the entire existing regulatory framework for dietary supplements would create immense confidence in hemp and CBD products, and would provide a great opportunity for hemp farmers across the nation.” -Jonathan Miller General Counsel US Hemp Roundtable
This would be great news for the struggling hemp farmers across the country. It would also be great news for the millions of consumers across the nation that have grown to depend on quality hemp products in their daily lives. Last but not least, let’s not forget about what hempsational news this would be for our planet. Through processes such as Phyto-remediation (cleaning the ground) and Aero-remediation (cleaning the air), hemp helps make our planet healthier and stronger with every plant grown. This means the more hemp we grow, the healthier the environment stands to become.
Hemp has the capability to help make people and the planet healthier. This is becoming common knowledge thanks to devoted hemp activists such as the legendary Jack Herer, author of “The Emperor Wears No Clothes.” The work he started was carried on and now has reached millions today. Sadly, we still live in a time where we are told what is good and what is not, and that is the way it is.
Hemp has proven itself to be a hero for America. Many people are unaware of the Hemp for Victory film produced by the USDA to help win WWII. The government encouraged American farmers to grow hemp to help win the war. Ships were equipped with ropes made of hemp, soldiers had uniforms made with hemp, and so on. Today, just like then, the possibilities for industrial applications go into the tens of thousands.
Could the Controlled Substance Act, supported by former US President Richard Nixon, really have impacted cannabis so much that all of the greatness of hemp would be forgotten? Apparently so. That is, until recent years. Not only Americans but the lawmakers they elected have started to take a stand against the unjust laws created by the federal government attached to hemp. At last, we’re starting to see a change.
Now that this bill has made its way to Capitol Hill, it’s up to us to not let it just sit on these crowded steps to be lost in political clutter like it was in the past. Do your part and reach out to your local elected leaders and ask them if they support the recently introduced congressional bill that would allow hemp and hemp compounds to be marketed and sold as dietary supplements. If they support this, be sure to ask them to show their support when the time comes to vote on the “Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act of 2020.”
If they stand against this bill, let them know they will be out of a job come next election, and mean it. When the political leaders elected to represent us choose to go against the will of the public to support private agendas, it is time for a change. As we can see with the US Federal Government, the tree of patriotism is significantly in need of a refreshing. That tree can use the patriotism of political leaders such as State Representatives Morgan Griffith (R-VA), Kurt Schrader (D-OR), and the others who support the will of the people.
